29th SUNDAY in ORDINARY TIME Year B 16th/17th October, 2021
FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK
Dear friends in Christ,
I greet you all in the name of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ! We
hope and pray that everyone is healthy and hearty. As we edge
towards the end of this liturgical year, we continue to be reminded
through the scriptures the core of who we are. This weekend, in
our gospel, we see that famous story of the sons of Zebedee
(James and John) asking Christ for ‘special’ places at His right and
left hands in His glory. Jesus reminded them that to be close to
Him means that they need to be ready to ‘become’ like Him who is
the servant “who came to serve and not to be served and to give
His life as a ransom for many.” He used that golden opportunity to
teach them that for one to be ‘great’ in the true sense of the word
means to be ready to ‘serve’ others. Greatness does not come
from ‘lording’ it over others or making your ‘authority’ felt by
others. Christ made it clear that this is the attitude of pagans and
must not be seen among believers. So let us pray this week for the
grace to be humble enough to always serve others and lift them up
rather than looking down on them and showing them how we are
better than them. This is what it means to be a Christian (Christ-
follower); one who loves and serves!
Where are the Men of our Parishes? Our Overnight Camp on the
22nd of October is still happening. We have had a bit of a change to
our initial plan. We were heading out to East Cooyar but that has
changed due to circumstances beyond our control. We will now be
heading to a farm in Crawford. This evening will be a very casual
evening of blokes coming together and spending quality time
together (eating, drinking and chatting), while getting a bit of
inspiration from St Joseph who is the patron saint of men and
fathers (as we come towards the end of this year of St Joseph).
Please contact us ASAP for details of this camp (venue, time, what
to bring etc). A few people have expressed interest which is good.
We hope to have a few men there for this awesome night. We
men tend not to give ourselves enough opportunities to just relax.
We need to know definite numbers ASAP for catering purposes.
The Alpha course in Blackbutt concluded last Wednesday. We
thank all those who participated in the program. It was awesome.
I was blessed to witness the spirit at work within the group the few
times I joined them. They spent 8 weeks together on this journey
sharing faith, food and fun. People blessed each other with their
stories and faith and great bonds were formed as sisters and
brothers on the journey of faith. It was great to hear people
voicing out what they have learnt from the course and what a
blessing it had been to them. They are now looking forward to
putting it all into practice in the community. We hope that
different groups can come together to run this awesome program.
It could be a group as small as 5 in a house or alternating. Alpha is
also run in work places. Let us know if you are interested and we
will guide you. Catholicism series is still running in Kingaroy every
Wednesday evening. These are just ways of nurturing our faith and
walking with other people on this journey.
The 20th of November has been set aside as the day for us to
appreciate God and each other. That will be the day for us to come
together to celebrate a Thanksgiving Mass for my time of ministry
in the Archdiocese of Brisbane. It will also be a time for me to
thank you all for being a part of my story. I am really looking
forward to that day to look into your faces and let you know what
you all mean to me. The greatest gift we can give to each other is
to lift each other up to God in the Eucharist. Please lock it into your
diaries! We are looking at having this awesome celebration at St
Patrick’s Catholic School Hall in Nanango at 10am. The choice of
the venue is so that we can all fit with a bit of social distancing.
This event is for all our communities not just for Nanango!
There will be Anointing Masses on Friday the 29th of October at
Kingaroy 9am and Nanango 12pm. We would also like to celebrate
those who are celebrating significant wedding anniversaries this
year. We couldn’t have it last year due to covid. So, this includes
those from last year. If you are marking or have marked 10, 20, 25,
40, 50 or above in 2020 or 2021, please let us know so that we can
celebrate you as a parish community. If this is you, can you please
send your photos to the office ASAP (one of your wedding day and
one of what you look like now).
Blessings, Fr Chukwudi

Message from Archbishop Mark Coleridge
The first assembly of the Plenary Council is now behind us, finishing
with Mass live-streamed around Australia last Sunday from the
cathedral in Brisbane. It was an extraordinary week, all the more so
because it was completely online. We had our technical hitches but
by and large it was a marvel of technology. The assembly also
showed that the process of discernment and spiritual conversation
works if you give it time and trust the process. We were trying to
discern the voice of the Holy Spirit among all the voices, and by
week’s end all the members found it a powerful spiritual
experience. But it’s not the end of the journey. It produced a lot of
raw material which now has to be refined into concrete, creative
and realistic proposals about the Church’s future to be discussed
and voted upon in the second assembly which we hope will be face
to face in Sydney in July next year. So keep the prayers going.
Prayer is the fuel for the journey.

QUESTIONS ABOUT THE CATHOLIC VIEW ON VACCINATION?
You can learn more about Pope Francis’s recent encouragement to all
to get vaccinated with approved Covid-19 vaccines in the link below.
Pope Francis referred to it as ‘an act of love.’
https:// www.vaticannews.va/en/pope/news/2021-08/pope-francis-
appeal-covid-19-vaccines-act-of-love.html.
The Archdiocese of Brisbane supports COVID-19 vaccination except for
those people with a valid medical exemption from their health
professional.
We do recognise that some Catholics have concerns about the origins
of the cell-line associated with the development of the AstraZeneca
vaccine. If this is a concern for you then the Pfizer and Moderna
vaccines provide two alternatives that avoid this issue.

A message from Aid to the Church in Need Australia: As we approach the month of Holy Souls, consider arranging Masses for your deceased loved ones and for the Holy Souls in Purgatory. For over fifty years, ACN has passed on the Mass offerings of the Catholic people, to poor priests, who have no other means of material support. In return, these priests offer Masses for the intentions of the
donor. Each year, over 400,000 priests, ten per cent of the world’s priests, are supported by 1.5 million Mass offerings. One hundred percent of every Mass offering is sent directly to the priest in need. To arrange your Masses visit: www.aidtochurch.org/Masses
