Paragraph Writing
Topic Sentence
• Every paragraph starts with a topic sentence
• It introduces the topic of the paragraph and the controlling idea. The controlling idea tells the reader what will be said about the topic.
• Ex. High school is a challenging experience.
Supporting Sentences/The Body
• The body of a paragraph has supporting sentences
• It gives detail to develop the main idea of the paragraph. ( more about this later)
The Concluding Sentence
• The Concluding Sentence re-states the Topic Sentence in another way.
• Ex. In conclusion, being a high school students
The PEE Method
Time to PEE on our Writing
• PEE stands for Point, Evidence and Explanation. By using this formula you will create an effective and strong paragraph. These are the Supporting Sentences of your paragraph.
• P – Introduces the point you want to make
• E - Gives examples/reasons/facts to you reader to support your point.
• E- Explains how your examples connect to your point
PEE Method
• Topic: Describe Riverside high school
• Point – Riverside is a wonderful school because of the many extra-curricular activities that are available to students.
• Evidence – Riverside offers extra-curricular activities from sports, to clubs to the arts. For example, during the fall, we have a swim team, junior and varsity volleyball. We also offer clubs like the multi-cultural club, green club and poetry club.
• Explanation – Having a variety of extra-curricular activities offered makes Riverside a more enjoyable school and therefore a great school to attend.
