FROM PAGE 7lapse rates for opiate addiction don’tdrop to 15 percent for five years. Oneprogram, one treatment facility, onechurch and one group isn’t going tosolve this problem.”
Finnegan spoke about the need forcommunities to commit to working to-gether for the long haul, but on theshort term, focus on what he called im-mediate harm reduction.
“People are dying tonight and therewill be many people that die across ourstate tonight because a person every 19minutes is dying from opiate and heroinabuse in our country. Even before treat-ment starts, every family should haveNarcan or Naloxone because that stopsdeath. Everyone that has a family mem-ber that suffers from Opiate Abuse Dis-order should have this in their householdbecause it saves lives.”
Often called the “Opiate Antidote,”
years of her own son’s addiction andbeing simultaneously angered anddevastated by the growing number ofheroin related deaths and horror sto-ries in recent months.
Her hands trembled around the mi-crophone as she spoke, especiallywhen introducing her son, Sean, nowseveral months clean who quietly saton stage the entire time. McNeely ad-mitted she was completely overwhelm-ed by the turnout, but she and JackieBall have now sharpened the focus ofthis group. It’s one thing to exist, but it’sanother to organize and unify andmove forward together in that searchfor a solution. Simply put, they say thismeeting won’t be a one off.
“The OC Worship Center has com-mitted to having us here every Tues-day through December,” McNeely toldthe crowd, “if you are interested in oursub-committees please sign up andleave your information.”
McNeely says there will be four com-mittees: Education, Awareness, Sup-port and Navigation. While each groupmay focus on different aspects of thisissue, all will play a vital role in makingsure that this community is not just in-formed about the dangers of heroin andopiate addiction, but it also knows whatto do and where to go for help.
“We have to keep the momentumgoing,” said Ball. “Take this messageand pass it along.”
Carozza challenged the audienceto “follow through” with the commit-ment and this battle to free this com-munity from the chains of addiction.
As the room cleared on Tuesdaynight, there were more hugs and moretears, but there were a noticeablenumber of smiles. Perhaps, in order tobattle a drug that renders so manypowerless, the only comfort can comefrom that sense of power in numbers.A community that knows that it has areal and scary problem showed up onTuesday night. That community drewa definitive line in the sand, and itsounded its rallying cry on all fronts ofthe battlefield.
This week, a small coastal commu-nity became warriors against opiateaddiction and dug in its heels for thebattles that inevitably lay ahead.
munity to start the healing process,”said Lankford. “Worcester CountyHealth Department wants to be part ofthe solution, but we know we don’thave all the answers.”
Lankford spoke of the treatmentavailable at four locations in the countyincluding the WACS center in WestOcean City, while Worcester CountyState’s Attorney Beau Oglesby andWorcester County Sheriff’s Office Sgt.Nate Passwaters, who heads up thecounty’s Drug Task Force, explainedthe enforcement and the prosecutionside of the battle.
“We will hold people accountablefor criminal behavior but we know wecan’t arrest our way out of this prob-lem,” said Oglesby, “but we want themessage to be clear that selling poi-son for profit will not be tolerated inthis community.”
Oglesby and Passwaters both ac-knowledged that there is no “one sizefits all” approach to stopping this epi-demic, they each stressed the needfor education, both early and often, inschools.
Getting that message to kids is thejob of Jake Windsor, who is currentlyWorcester County’s sole adolescentcounselor. Windsor is a former opiateaddict and has been clean for six years.
“We are finally getting away fromthe cookie cutter approach to treat-ment,” he said, “but we need to helpaddicts get the simple things theyneed after treatment so they have abetter chance at staying clean, liketransportation, housing, and jobs.”
Steve Price, who was there repre-senting the Board of Education forWorcester County’s Public Schools, echoed the sentiments of all thespeakers that this problem was uniqueand the school system is committed todoing its part.
“The challenge has changed, so wehave to be different,” he said. “I amhere to show that the intent of Worces-ter County Public Schools is committedto this issue. As a grandfather of threeboys in the school system, I’m terrifiedtoo. Our school system is ready to part-ner with anyone to stop this.”
Heidi McNeely started the Worces-ter Warriors group after battling through
Narcan, also known as Naloxone, isbecoming much more readily available, and training is also offered on how touse it, as was explained by the team ofhealth officials and counselors at theWorcester County Health Department.
“The thing that is missing in Mary-land and across our country is this in-dividual peer support,” said Finnegan.“We need to use the energy and thesuffering in this room for constructivepurpose. If you want to make a differ-ence, speak up with courage. You area powerbase. It won’t be one father orone mother, we all need to stand upand scream about this problem.”
Kutresa Lankford is the clinical advi-sor for Addictions in Worcester County. She was stunned by the turnout andspoke about the growing resources inthe county for addicts and for the fami-lies of addicts.
“This is where it begins for our com-
