Pacific News from Manoa NEWSLEITER OF THE CENTER FOR PACIFIC ISLANDS STUDIES, UNIVERSITY OF HAWAI'I
SPECIAL EDITION: PACIFIC ACRONYMS This issue of Pacific News from Manoa is an update of the acronym newsletter which was published in 1985, edited by Judith Hamnett. In this listing, we have included acronyms that are in use in the Pacific even though some of them may not be recognized outside specific areas.
The acronyms generally represent organizations but there are several that refer to events and political situations, such as ANZUS and SPNFZT, geographic designations such as FSM and PNG, and concepts such as ECU and SIS. Each entry is in the following general format for the information that was available and applicable: ACRONYM; type of organization (see below); location; description.
This edition was a collaborative effort of the CPIS staff and Michael Hamnett of the CDS, SSRI, UHM. We hope the updated list will be helpful as a handy reference about organizations and terms used in the Pacific. As always, please write to the editor regarding any additions or corrections.
Some of the organizations have been identified as one of the following types: IO: International Organization MCO: Metropolitan Country Organization NGO: Non-Government Organization PIO: Pacific Island Organization RO: Regional Organization * indicates that the acronym is no longer in use ** A recent article in Pacific Magazine (July August, 1992, page 60) mentions that the COM is expected to dissolve next year.
