Stewardship Retreat
“He said to them, “Come away by yourselves to a deserted place and rest a while.” MARK 6:31 Do you spend time, every day, alone and in silence listening to how God is calling you? If not, you are missing out on a wonderful opportunity to develop a more personal relationship with Him. Unless we talk and more importantly, listen to God every day, how else will we know how He is calling us to Stewardship? Consider making a retreat this year, spend some “alone” time with God.

A Message from our Pastor, Rev. Joseph T. Szolack
Dear Friends in Christ, It is always interesting to speak to people about what they are reading. Summer is often a great time to catch up on reading (although this does not always work out hope that everyone is taking time to relax a little. It is very enjoyable to read and I appreciate spiritual works, along with other types of literature. At this very moment, I am reading another Italian murder mystery, by Andrea Camilleri (I love the Montalbano series!). Naturally, I am reading a spiritual work as well. Currently, I am finishing a book on silence written by simply “A Caruthusian”, and for interest I am reading On Evangelical Catholicism and Traits the Next Pope Has to Have by George Weigel. I have been asked in the past for a list of some good classic, Catholic spiritual works that would be good to read. My steady recommendation list would be: The Confessions of Saint Augustine; any works by Saint Teresa of Avila and Saint John of the Cross; the three volume set of Jesus of Nazareth by Pope Benedict XVI; The Glories of Mary by Saint Alphonsus Liguori; The Mystical Body of Christ by Archbishop Fulton Sheen and Deep Conversion/Deep Prayer by Father Thomas Dubay. These are just a few of the spiritual works I have enjoyed, but certainly the list is endless. As for Catholic literature, Brideshead Revisited by Evelyn Waugh is a must as are the works of Flannery O’Connor. Also, Selected Essays by Hiliare Belloc are thought provoking and the works of Monsignor Hugh Benson may make your hair stand on end. The important thing is to use one’s time well and to nourish one’s soul. It goes without saying that the most important book is the Holy Bible. That is the book that I would want if stranded on a desert island! Movies that are worth our Catholic time would be Into Great Silence (the Carthusians); For Greater Glory (about the Cristeros Movement); Silence (about the Japanese martyrs which is difficult to watch); The Scarlet and the Black; A Man for All Seasons; and some old, great movies that present a wonderful, Catholic, edifying story such as Going My Way; Bells of St. Mary’s; Keys to the Kingdom (which I love); The Miracle of Marcelino; The Carmelites (about the execution of 21 Carmelites during the French Revolution); Come to the Stable; Teresa de Jesus; The Passion of the Christ and Jesus of Nazareth. Of course there are others such as the fun movie Trouble with Angels. I pray that you will find Catholicism in the media in order to build up your Catholic faith. God bless you, Father Szolack
