Page 1: Our Cities Have Become Polluted Says Premiere Environmental

Our  Polluted  Cities  By  Premiere  Environmental  February  7,  2014    Many  of  us  are  fortunate  enough  to  live  in  an  area  where  we  have  clean,  fresh  air.  However,  there  are  some  cities  where  the  concentration  of  air  pollution  is  at  near-‐toxic  levels.  Air  pollution  can  cause  bronchitis,  asthma,  lung  infections  and  cancer,  hypertension,  and  even  dementia.  The  signs  are  clear,  in  the  most  polluted  cities  like  Beijing,  Delhi,  Ahwaz,  and  Ulaanbaatar,  the  air  is  cloudy  and  visibility  is  low.  It  may  be  thick  and  hard  to  breathe  in  and  out.  This  is  a  clear  sign  that  the  situation  is  quite  dire.    In  2010,  an  estimated  3.2  million  people  died  premature  because  of  outdoor  air  pollution.  Two  thirds  of  those  people  were  living  in  Asia.  In  the  last  century  air  quality  has  increased  in  the  United  States  and  Europe,  while  air  quality  is  dramatically  worsening  throughout  Asia.    Air  pollution  is  the  fifth  largest  killer  of  those  living  in  India  and  China’s  air  pollution  has  reached  record  levels.  The  U.S.  Embassy  monitors  air  pollution  in  Beijing  and  saw  a  record  spike  in  air  pollution  levels  in  January  2013.  Although,  China  and  the  capital  city,  Beijing  is  infamous  for  its  air  pollution  it  is  not  the  worlds  worst.  The  World  Health  Organization  measures  air  pollution  in  parts  per  million  of  particles  smaller  than  10  micrometers  (PM10)  in  the  air.  Beijing’s  air  has  an  average  PM10  of  121.  While  the  worst  record  belongs  to  Ahwaz,  in  southwestern  Iran,  with  a  PM10  of  372.  Ulaanbaatar  is  the  second  most  polluted  city  with  a  279  PM10.  Just  for  reference,  the  global  average  is  71  PM10.    The  grave  reality  of  this  situation  is  that  air  pollution  travels.  Even  though  cities  in  Asia  are  producing  a  lot  of  the  pollution,  we  all  share  the  world  and  it  is  traveling  via  jet  stream  throughout.  There  are  ways  to  take  steps  to  clean  the  air  of  a  city.  Look  to  the  recovery  of  Pittsburgh  and  London.  Unfortunately,  other  countries  have  not  adopted  steps  like  the  Clean  Air  Act  in  the  United  States.  It  is  time  to  start  helping  to  change  other  countries  because  many  people  are  stuck  there  and  forced  to  breathe  air  that  may  end  up  ending  their  lives.
