Overview
• Prosthesis• A medically prescribed appliance which
replace the missing body part.

• Orthosis• A medically prescribed appliance which correct,
support and maintain the correction of the deformed or disable part of the body.

Prosthetist & Orthotist
Prosthetist: Designs, fabricates, and fits prostheses for persons who have lost a limb due to an injury or disease.
Orthotist: Designs, fabricates, and fits orthoses to support limbs or spine affected by muscle or ligament weakness, paralysis, or lack of muscle control.

used the peg leg or hand hook
• With the birth of the great civilizations of Egypt, Greece and Rome came the development of the scientific approach toward medicine and subsequently prosthetic science

• In 1696, Pieter, a Dutch surgeon, introduced the
first non-locking, below knee prosthesis

• Archaeologists have uncovered specially fabricated braces in Egypt that date back to 2500 BC .
• Later there are records that some blacksmiths makers became known for fabricating devices for injured people.
• craftsman began to specialize in fabrication of devices

• In Camper down, New South Wales, Australia’s first hospital based full time Orthotic Department was established in 1911 at Royal Alexandra Hospital for Children (RAHC).
• Major advances in orthotics and prosthetics resulted from the increase of patients due to the First and Second world wars and the Polio epidemic of the 1940’s and 1950’s.

Statistics
• Diabetes and trauma are the most common causes of amputation in most parts of the World.
• In 2030 Pakistan will be the 4th largest diabetic population in the world (Diabetes Association Pakistan)
• Major cause of amputation in Pakistan is diabetes and trauma (Bomb blast, mines, EQ, Car accidents)
