A Catalyst for Sustainable Development Goals
Organized byCollege of Home Science, (Udaipur Chapter)
Maharana Pratap University of Agriculture & Technology, Udaipur
1 - 3 February, 2018
The Home Science Association of India (HSAI) was established in 1950 with its headquarters
in The Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda, Vadodara. Since then the association has
grown in stature and has established several state branches with more than 2500 members.
The major aim of the association is to promote the welfare of the family to raise the technical
competence and standards of profession in the field of the Home Science and allied subjects. It
explores the plausibility of the establishment of the perfections in the social orders starting
from home life to the community level.
The HSAI has been at the forefront of this advocacy and documents how to improve lives and
livelihoods while not sacrificing the sustainbility of the environment. It has showcased several
actions that; promote learning from diverse regional variations; promote fundamental
educational values; embed sustainable development considerations in research and in the
curriculum; adopt considerations of sustainability in leadership practices and underline social
responsibility in outreach at home and in their state partnerships.
The XXXII Biennial Conference of HSAI will focus on sharing strategies and practices that
demonstrate how higher education institutions offering 'Family and Community Science'
programme contribute as catalyst for innovation and sustainable development.
The theme of the conference 'Family and Community Science: a catalyst for sustainable
development goals' widely covered different areas of Community Science viz; Foods Science
and Nutrition, Extension Education and Communication Management, Resource Management
and Consumer Science, Human Development and Family Studies and Textiles and Apparel
Designing under varied sub-themes covered in its three days schedule.
The purpose of education is not only earning or related to job or a service, it is more than that,
we want to educate our young generation to compete in this global scenario, to handle critical
situation, to manage their own life and also become overall a good citizen.
In view of shift from millennium development goals (MDGs) to sustainable development goals
(SDGs) with a focus on achieving gender equality, empowerment of women & girls, ensuring
healthy lives and promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth and
productive empowerment, there is a need to view the higher education in the global context
with innovations in teaching, research and extension.
2018 is the third year of the new global development agenda, and the start of the countdown to
achieve the set sustainable development goals. Much of the innovative capacity in higher
education, as in the wider society, rests with empowered young people. It is also the most
profound concern with sustainability of today's youth that must inuence research and
learning, innovation and transformation in Universities.
'Family and Community Science' is a broad discipline that focuses on the scientific knowledge
in the life style of families and communities. It is need based, professionally oriented education
to assist family and community towards improved living. It is the key subject in shaping the
future cause of lives, as it equips the future citizens with relevant knowledge, competencies
and prepares them to become efficient custodians of the nation's future.
