A New Focus in Math
In today's rapidly changing world school's need to respond to these changes
and provide meaningful mathematics for all students so that each is prepared
for the modern day workplace and everyday life.
To be successful in today’s technological world, students must be able to proc-
ess and interpret data, communicate their understanding with others and be
able to apply mathematical reasoning. To achieve this, the focus in math classes
has shifted to:
a greater emphasis on problem solving and less on number facts and proce-
dural skills.
students actively engaged in constructing their own understanding from
generally teacher-directed instruction.
student collaboration and sharing of ideas from mostly independent learn-
ing.
a greater integration of computer and handheld technology to investigate
new ideas and develop deeper conceptual understanding.
assessing student understanding by means of observations and conversa-
tions as well as student generated products.
student self-assessment and planning of next steps for personal growth.
an emphasis on the processes associated with learning mathematics, such as
analyzing, making conclusions and exploring alternative solution strategies
rather than an emphasis solely on the final answer.
As a parent, talk to your child's math teacher to find out ways to support your
child's learning and foster the importance of a sound mathematical foundation
to ensure success in the 21st century.
On Friday, March 28th our students were sporting their brand new t-shirts and sweatshirts with our new school logo. If you missed the or-der we will have some shirts in vari-ous sizes available on a first come first serve basis and we will do an-
other sale in the fall.
SECRETARY’S DAY We hope you will join us on April 23rd as we take time during the day to thank Mrs. Mannella for every-thing she does for us
each and every day.

DIB AND DOB AND THE JOURNEYHOME!!!!
April 2 2014 I went to the gym and there was a big tree with 6 branches then there was 2 people geared with camping gear they were the Carousel Players! Doing their DIB DOB play. It was such a good show. They fought alot and there was a big monster 20 minutes into the show! There was a person in the tree doing all of the props and there was an-other person doing all of the music. It was so much fun. I think it was the best show at OP.

Dib and Dob
On April 2 2014 the Carousel Players came to our school and presented a play. It was called Dib and Dob. I really liked the play. It had monsters, two brothers and some nice looking puppets. The story was based on two brothers who did not get along so well. They would al-ways be able to reach deep down and love each other. Just like the time Dob was being bossed around by Dib but his brother Dob still saved Dib because he loved him from the bottom of his heart.

All students of our students have access to Dreambox online software. While staff are making every effort to provide opportunities to use
this software in our computer lab, our data tell us that at-home use has fallen. We would like to see an in-crease in at-home use, and you can help us! Par-ents/students should log onto https://play.dreambox.com/login/42cv/orchardpp Once logged in, students know their individual pass-words to play. Dreambox collects all kinds of data and responds to each student's individual needs by adjust-ing the math lesson to the student's ability. This is a very valuable resource that all of our students have access to. Please encourage your child to log in at least two times per week for about 25 minutes. Con-sider it on-going homework along with reading every night for about 20 minutes!
