European WSR applied to government vessels
SR Industry jointly regulated by Maritime,
Environment and Labour authorities
Annual capacity ~ 900,000 LDT*
(237 ships dismantled in 2010)
Import scrap(2010): 19.1 million tons (10.6 from EU27)

The ship recycling center of Turkey is located in the vicinity of
Aliaga/Nemrut (Aegean coast), the biggest industrial area in
Turkey, where ships up to VLCC size can be accommodated
Economic reasons for focusing on smaller regional tonnage. Technically adept to receive any type and size

Q & A
− Should shipbuilders take account of the needs of ship recyclers?
YES, DEFINITELY. I THINK WE SHOULD GET TOGETHER WITH
THEM AND DISCUSS THE WHYS AND WHATS AND HOWS .
WOULD OECD OR IMO (OR ICS?)ORGANIZE SUCH A MEETING?
OECD WP on Shipbuilding (WP6)
Paris, 7-8 July 2011
Ship recycling practices in Turkey
Page 26
− What can ship recyclers do to minimise their own impacts on their surroundings? THESE ARE ALL SHOWN IN GOVERNMENT LAWS AND REGULATIONS, INTERNATIONAL AGREEMENTS (IMO, ILO, BASEL CONVENTION GUIDELINES ON SHIP RECYCLING). ALL WE HAVE TO DO IS TO READ AND IMPLEMENT THEM.
OECD WP on Shipbuilding (WP6)
Paris, 7-8 July 2011
Ship recycling practices in Turkey
Page 27
− What would be the advantages of the availability of recycling-friendly vessels as opposed to“normal” vessels? UNTIL WE KNOW EXACTLY WHAT “RECYCLING-
FRIENDLY” MEANS, I CAN ONLY SAY THAT “FRIENDLY”
SOUNDS NICE. EVERYBODY LIKES FRIENDS.
OECD WP on Shipbuilding (WP6)
Paris, 7-8 July 2011
Ship recycling practices in Turkey
Page 28
− Would such vessels command a recycling premium at the end of their working lives? I REFER TO THE PREVIOUS QUESTION’S WORDING: “RECYCLING FRIENDLY VESSELS”, WHAT DOES IT MEAN? SOME YEARS AGO MEPC STARTED A FUND CALLED“SHIP RECYCLING FUND”. IT WAS NOT SPECIFIED FOR WHOM AND WHY. OUR ASSOCIATION DONATED 10 000.-$ TO THIS FUND HOPING THAT THIS FUND WOULD BE DIRECTED TO SR FACILITIES. I DO NOT KNOW IF ANY OTHER INSTITUTION OR GOVERNMENT FOLLOWED . I GUESS IT STILL LIES THERE.
