Week 3 The Angel’s Candle (Joy)
The Prophet’s Candle reminds us of
God’s promise to send a Savior. The
Bethlehem Candle told of Christ’s
birthplace and the peace He wants to
bring to us and the world. Today we
light the third candle which is the
Angel’s Candle. Many parents send
birth announcements when their new
baby is born to let friends know about
the exciting news. God wanted the
world to know about the birth of His
Son the Lord Jesus Christ. This was such
big wonderful news for the whole world
that God used angels to deliver the
message.

We are looking into the facts of this glorious time
we call Christmas.
You’re no stranger to the charm and beauty of
the Christmas Story. But there are glorious truths
surrounding Christ’s birth that are easy to
overlook in the business of the holidays.
What is the truth about Christmas? Why does so
much controversy cloud the true meaning and
history of this sacred holiday? How can Christian
families respond in a culture that seems to be
declaring war on truth and rewriting reality?
Kids Worship 10:00 am Room 401
Join Sunday Women’s
Fellowship
January 6th for a 12-week
study “The Father of Israel”
which tells the stories of
Abraham, Sarah, Isaac, Jacob,
and Esau—rich with history, meaning, and
spiritual truths. John MacArthur teaches
the context and meaning of these stories
and characters, studying the themes of
covenant and obedience. Like the
patriarchs, by faith you’ll learn to depend
on God in everything. If you would like us to
order you a study book, they are $6.50.
Having the study book is not required.

We had a wonderful prayer gathering on the first Wednesday of
December. Several people joined us and that is always very special. It
seems our prayers were mainly directed to the Lord on behalf of young
people and the ministries serving them. How wonderful for young people to hear the
good news and have the opportunity not only to fellowship but to hear about God's
love and genuine interest in them! Let's pray that those receiving the Christmas gifts
through our own youth group ministry will be touched in a very positive way. If you
can join us on the first Wednesday of January, I think you will be blessed and I know
we will!
I hope everyone has a wonderful Christmas season!

Float in the Mystery Faith Not
. . . the mystery that has been kept hidden from ages and generaons, but has now been
revealed to His saints. God wanted to make known to them the glorious riches of this mystery among
the Genles, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory. Colossians 1:26-27
“Hey look at me,” my five-year-old sister shouted.
Our family was on vaca on in Utah and we floated in the magical Great Salt Lake as though we had
life jackets on. Our engineer father could explain how a salinity of eight mes the ocean displaced ob-
jects, but we didn’t grasp all that. We were busy holding our heads, hands and feet above the surface
and giggling.
The grace of Christ is another inexplicable mystery. It is the mystery of all mysteries. How can God ac-
cept me when I know, and I know He knows, the extent of the darkness in my heart? Theologians say
it has to do with subs tu onal atonement wherein my sin is transferred to the crucified body of
Christ, but I don’t grasp the full depth of all that. I do know that when I fall into His grace, it
holds me up.
I don’t float o1en enough. I make a mental acknowledgement that Jesus died for me, then move on to
proving my worth. My human nature wants to tread against rejec on. But I’ll never cross the ocean of
sin between me and God. My only hope is to relax and trust in the sufficiency of Jesus
alone.
I need to spend more me reposing in my salva on. There are minutes I could carve out to enjoy the
buoyancy of grace. I could quiet my heart and delight in how I bob above spiritual drowning. The disci-
pline I most need to exert is to rest there. Jesus around me, in me, through me—this is the greatest
mystery of all mes. I can’t fully understand it. I can only accept it, wonder at it and float
in it.
Prayer: “Lord Jesus, I rest in the mystery of Your grace-filled love.”
. . . Don Goulding
