days. The chicks will arrive
tentatively on January 8, 2015,
with the birds being ready for
contests and market in Febru-
ary. The chicks are brought to
Houma at one day of age.

cost. Once you have the

Join the 4-H Broiler Project!
Raising young meat-
type chickens (broilers) is one of
the most interesting and fun-
filled activities a 4-H’er can ex-
perience. Even though the 4-H
Broiler Project is one of the most
competitive projects among
parish and state poultry
contests, more and more

broiler will weigh about five
pounds, upon completing the
project.

be distributed at the October
club meetings. The deadline to
order the baby chicks is :

OCTOBER 2014
4-H members will
be receiving their project
books throughout the month
of October. Again this year,
project books are not
a requirement, but
members who complete
them do receive activity
points which will help for
4-H camp selection.
4-H members should
begin working in their
project books when they
receive them. They work on
these books at home with
the help of parents or
interested volunteers. 4-H
members can work together
to complete their books, but
must each complete a
book.
NOTE– some books are
1year books, 2 or 3 year
books. What does that
mean? In the front of the
project book it should tell
you how much of the book
should be complete per
year. For example,
Discovering 4-H is a 1 year
book, so the entire book
should be completed in 1
year. Focus on Photography
can be a 2 year book. That
means that half of the les-
sons and activities can be
completed the first year and
the rest will be completed
the second year.
*Project books are due to the 4-H office by March 13,
2015 by 4:00 pm.
4-H members who
selected more
than one book will
only receive one. If they
complete the first book and
would like another, please
turn in the completed
project book to the 4-H
office and we will issue
another book.
Please contact the 4-H
office if you have any
questions (985)873-6495.

OCTOBER 2014
I pledge my hands to larger service…. As 4-H members, we
recite this line of the 4-H pledge at each meeting. This year,
we want you to focus on helping the world around you. We
have planned a variety of service activities to help you
“Make your mark on the world”.
- Don’t forget to keep track of your “acts of kindness”.
- Operation Christmas Child shoe boxes are due to the 4-H
office by October 14, 2014.
If you are being bullied... Reach Out -Tell an adult. Sometimes you may have
to tell more than one trusted adult.
Ask your friends to help you. There is safety in num-
bers. Practice what to say the next time you're bul-
lied with your parents, teachers or friends.
Be Cool in the Moment - Stay calm and confident.
Don't show the bully that you're sad or mad. Ignore
the bully and walk away. Remember: Fighting back
can make bullying worse.
Change the School Community - Work with others to
stop bully behavior; your whole school will benefit.
Remember: A lot of kids have to cope with bullying.
You are not alone. No one deserves to be bullied.
If you witness bullying... Interrupt It - Stand next to, or speak up for, the per-
son being bullied. Ask the bully to stop. Comfort the
person being bullied and offer friendship.
Get Help - Walk away and get help. Find an adult
who can intervene.
If you are the bully... Make a Commitment to Change - Talk to an adult,
like a teacher or parent, about how to get along
with others. Ask a friend to help you stop your bully
behavior. Apologize to the kids you have bullied.
Focus on Empathy and Responsibility - Think about
what it feels like to be bullied -- would you want to
be treated that way? Before you speak, think about
whether your words will help or hurt another student.
Change Your Behavior - Resist peer pressure to bully.
If you start to bully, walk away and find something
else to do. Remember: You don't have to like every-
one around you, but you have to treat everyone
with respect.
