Leaker Direct has added three new boiling water taps toits Kompakt range. Kompakt has no internet presence -
so consumers can’t price compare, which is a distinctadvantage. The three in one Dolce tap, available in
brushed steel or chrome, dispenses hot, cold and boilingwater. The three in one Gusto tap has a square spout and
comes in chrome. The Caldo is in chrome and dispensesboiling water only. The tank design allowsinstallation into a base unit without taking
up too much valuable space. Leaker boilingwater taps dispense water at 100ºC.

Low market penetration of dishwashers in the UK means
that the kitchen sink is still mainly used for washing up - so
roomy bowls and a decent size drainer are important to
the lower to mid section of the market. Further up at the posh
end where the consumer is more likely to own a dishwasher
and have solid surface worktops, undermounts are definitely
gaining ground.
Stainless steel remains the most popular material and one
and a half bowl the most popular format. Ceramic, which used
to be mainly confined to the traditional end, is enjoying a
renaissance with a good selection of contemporary sinks now
available in fine fireclay - a more modern material than the
heavy, chunky stuff used to make Belfast style sinks. Ceramic is a
popular choice with those who want colour but possibly have
unhappy memories of composite, dating from the days when
the material stained easily and was difficult to clean. The
problem with the old composites was that the surface was
slightly rough so limescale would cling to it - and liquids such as
tea, coffee and red wine hang on to the limescale causing a
hard to shift stain.
Contemporary monobloc chrome mixers are the favourite
choice in taps. Bridge mixers are often chosen for use with
traditional style fireclay sinks - but pillar taps are very rarely seen.
Consumers like the idea of a pull out spray rinse - inspired most
probably by TV chefs - but it is really important to point out that
not all the taps on the market will work efficiently with the typical
UK gravity system. There are some models available that will work
properly at around 1 bar but it is still worth checking out the
consumer’s system before installation.
Instant hot water taps are becoming more familiar at the
upper end of the market with big brand names such as Franke
now in the product mix. The instant hot water tap is one of those
things where you really do need to have a working model in the
showroom for the customer to get the point. You can read more
about the Quooker range of instant boiling water taps on page 8.
Filtered water taps have been around a while now and the
market appears to be static. We think the off putting element is
the cartridge and the need to replace it. It is true that this is not
often but some consumers do see it as a hassle they can live
without and are happy to either buy bottled water, use a Brita
filter jug or opt for an American style fridge freezer that
dispenses chilled filtered water and ice.

The internet is playing an
increasingly important role in
the sale of kitchen sinks and
taps – especially in the
refurbishment market where
customers are now very inclined
to shop around and source non
cabinet products themselves. A
recent survey by sinks-
taps.com, the UK’s largest
online retailer of kitchen
sinks, taps and accessories,
has discovered large price
differences between themselves
and some major brand DIY
stores. The survey shows that
sinks-taps.com is currently
beating the major brand DIY
stores on price across many
kitchen products. For example:
B&Q currently have the Franke
ARX160 1.5 bowl stainless steel
sink listed at £319, sinks-
taps.com are selling the same
item for £251 (a difference of
21 percent). The Homebase
website lists the Franke Rolux
chrome tap at £659, sinks-
taps.com are selling the same
tap for £335 (a difference of
49 percent). The research
indicates this trend across
most sinks, taps and waste
disposal units throughout.
Just about every famous
brand of sink and tap is
available via internet sellers,
plus a few you may never have
heard of. Prices are very
competitive, delivery is fast
and there are many special
offers such as free taps or
accessories. As with
appliances, the internet has
become the place where the
savvy sink shopper looks first.

The Quooker Combi
Quooker taps come in four different styles and fourdifferent finishes. All of them are easy to install andhave full height adjustment with 360º rotation. Thetaps deliver 100ºC water in a fine aerated sprayrather than a direct jet and can only be operated byadult hands so children cannot accidentally switchthe hot water on. A Quooker can be retrofitted to anexisting kitchen and the tap hole can be cut in anysolid surface other than glass.
In an area free from limescale the HITAC filter onlyneeds to be changed at three to five year intervals. Inareas where limescale is a problem the tank will needto be cleaned out every 12-18 months. Both jobs areeasy - and Quooker’s trained engineer force is availableto carry out maintenance tasks for a small charge.

Sleek, stylish and allowing consumers to
dispense with the electric kettle, the
Quooker boiling water tap has become a
kitchen must have. It can be used for
everything from making hot drinks to supplying
water for cooking vegetables, pasta, boiling
eggs and many other tasks. The Quooker was
invented by Henri Peteri back in 1970. He was
working on the development of instant soup
but realised it would never be instant without
ready to use boiling water on tap. After many
prototypes, his son Niels came on the scene
and the idea turned into a product. In 1992,
the Quooker Basic tap was launched in the
Netherlands and by 2000, Quooker had started
to make a profit. The tap was launched on to
the UK market in 2005 and has rapidly become
a kitchen essential.
Although there are many hot taps on the
market, Quooker is the only true dedicated
100ºC boiling water tap - and therefore the one
that replaces a kettle.
New from Quooker is the Combi. The dedicatedQuooker tap dispenses the exact amount of water
needed at 100ºC while water at 50-65ºC is availablevia the existing kitchen mixer. It is easy to install and
operates from a cold water feed.

The RL404CB ceramic sink indramatic glossy black.
The latest addition to the company’s Regi-Ceramic range of sinks, the stunning new black RL404CB, is also the result of many
months’ research and development into achieving the perfectglazed finish. The high gloss appearance was difficult to master as
the surface of the black fireclay from which the sink ismanufactured has a tendency to show flaws and inconsistencies.
Reginox addressed this by introducing additional steps into thefinishing process, some of which are undertaken by hand by
skilled craftsman. The end result is a beautiful sink that blendscontemporary angular design with a time-honoured material and
would suit both modern and traditional properties alike.
2012 has been a year of steadygrowth for sinks and tapsmanufacturer, Reginox UK.
Despite difficult economic conditions trading results from Reginox
UK for the first half of this year were up by more than 30 percent
on the same period for 2011. The growth has arisen as a result of
a concerted drive to attract new customers, combined with a strong focus
on developing existing business.
Certainly 2012 has seen Reginox working harder than ever to support
its retail customers. A consumer PR campaign, targeting the glossy KBB and
home interest magazines, aims to raise awareness of the brand amongst
consumers and drive footfall into retailers. The company has also
introduced a Showroom Award Scheme, which rewards selected retailers
for their loyalty and commitment to Reginox by providing them with direct
customer referrals, rebate schemes and additional point of sale materials.
This year has also seen a steady stream of new product introductions.
All of Reginox UK’s stainless steel sinks are produced at the company’s
factory in Holland, which uses the finest materials and employs world
class leading production techniques to create outstanding designs and
finishes of the highest quality.

The Nevada sink has a smooth, integrateddrainer and a geometric bowl.
The stainless steel Nevada sink, launched earlier this year, uses a uniquemanufacturing technique in the way the steel is cut by laser and manipulatedduring the manufacturing process. This technique allows Nevada’s bowls tobe made to any size and any configuration and they can be placed anywherewithin the sink frame. In Germany, for example, the ‘half bowl’ is often foundat the end of the sink, whereas in the UK it is traditionally in the middle; withNevada customers can specify how many bowls they would like and exactlywhere they would like them to be placed.
The Brooklyn tap hasa traditional look.
With black proving to be a populartheme within the kitchen generally,Reginox has recently introducedBrooklyn to its extensive tapcollection. A traditional polishedchrome mixer tap withcontemporary high gloss blackceramic handles, Brooklyn has beendesigned to complement any blackceramic, granite or composite sinkand would also work beautifullywith a stainless steel sink integratedinto a black worksurface.

Good design is at the heart of
products made by BA Components
and now the company has
established an annual bursary and awards
for art and design students at Doncaster
College. The annual BA Creativity Awards
evening held recently celebrated the
scheme and its first successes.
Students, partners, parents and
lecturers gathered in the impressive
reception at BA Components in Kirk Sandall
to enjoy the first BA Creativity Awards
evening and meet the winners. The event
was hosted by BA Components’ Sales and
Marketing Director David Caulfield who
explained the background to the bursary:
“BA employs almost 200 people in the
Doncaster area and it is important to us to
show our commitment to them by getting
involved at community level. This bursary
to the College combines community
interest with encouragement for growth
and development and promotes our
commitment and belief
in design and
marketing. The process
has been interesting,
challenging and
rewarding for all
involved.”
Students were asked to produce
artwork using whatever technique or
method they preferred, but could only use
raw materials or scrap from the BA
Doncaster factory. David Caulfield, assisted
by Design Consultant Phil Hooper and
lecturer Michael Bunn, monitored the
works as they developed and spoke to the
students as their ideas unfolded.
A short list of ten finalists was drawn up
and trophies were awarded to five. Highly
Commended awards were presented to
Fiona Humphrey and Rebecca Hilton for
their exhibit entitled Trees and to Rocky
Hudson for Domino Effect. Third place
including a trophy, certificate and a cheque
went to Rachel Kitchin for Landscape Panels
and second place to Paula Elward for her
carefully thought out and crafted work
Building Blocks. First prize with the
inaugural trophy and winners cheque went
to Catherine Curran for her tactile piece
The Wave Machine.
The evening was greatly enjoyed by all
– so much so that next year, Ian Latham of
Doncaster College announced, the awards
would be extended to both Further and
Higher Education students, widening the
scope and potential to find even more
talent and produce even more interesting
work. The winning entries were on display
at BA Components until early July.

supercooksA good oven is hard to resist for customers wholove cooking. Highlighting features and benefitscan help the sale - so make sure you know howmultifunction systems work and which settingshave consumer appeal.
TOP TIPS• Know what’s on TV.Great British Bake Off is a hit show – and Neff’sslideaway oven plays a starring role. The key cookeryprogrammes in terms of consumer influence areMasterchef, Saturday Kitchen and anything with Heston,Jamie, Delia or Hugh.
• Be willing and able to explain whatmay seem to be complicated features.Simon Plumbridge, Senior Product Manager atGaggenau explains: “I feel that lack of knowledge onfeatures such as steam cooking ends up with theappliance being branded as too difficult. Gaggenaumakes it a pre-requisite that all trading partners musthave displays connected to power so that liveexplanations can be given by trained designers whohave their knowledge updated annually. To support thiswe offer in house home economist visits for consumersthat purchase specialist appliances such as combi steamovens as well as pre sale demonstrations at ourWigmore Street showroom. Both of these services arefree of charge. It is in our interest to give as muchinformation as we can, pre and post sale.”
• Remember, it is not that difficult.“These days just about everyone can manage acomputer, the internet and a complicated smart phone. In comparison an oven is not that tricky,” says JohnMcLauchlan, Senior Product Manager at Siemens.“Research that we carry out nearly always has easy touse high on the list of critical issues. A lot of investmentis made to ensure operation is logical and simple. Thesame approach is taken to selecting the cookingfunction, whether it is to choose a basic setting orsomething more complicated. In this way the consumergets used to using the oven.” Familiarity with icondriven equipment was certainly in CDA’s mind whenthe sensor touch SV310 oven was launched. • Making it simple. On the face of it the ICS system from De Dietrichappears complex – but it is actually very easy to use.Richard Walker explains: “Using ICS all the user has todo is choose the correct dish from a range of optionson the control panel, place the dish on the right shelfand press start. Intelligent sensors in the oven cavityassess the humidity within the food to determine theoptimum temperature and cooking time. The oven willautomatically make use of its entire multifunctioncapability to cook the food to perfection.” Editor JanOrchard, who owns an ICS oven, admits to trying tocatch it out: “So far I have failed miserably - I was verysceptical about slow cooking, for example, but I havedone it with lamb, pork, chicken and beef and hadwonderful results every time. I would say to customerstrust the oven, it knows what it is doing.”

It is interesting to read that AMA Research
reckons that worktops account for about
14 percent of the total kitchen spend -
translated to £160 million at manufacturers
selling prices in 2010. This shows a huge
growth in value from a decade ago - and
reflects the interest in higher value natural
stone and solid surfaces. Once only found
in the luxury sector, both of these materials
have become more everyday choices.
Consumers do believe that a natural stone
or solid surface top adds value to their
home - and in these days of mild panic
about falling house prices this is something
that encourages them to trade up.
It is not that long ago that natural
stone was the default choice for those who
wanted the mineral look - but now
engineered stone is more widely available
there is much more choice. The
introduction of textured stone surfaces to
laminate is playing a part too, with
customers who want the look but have not
got the budget to buy real stone.
According to AMA, the solid
surface/engineered stone sector takes about
15 percent of the market by value and five
percent by volume. The introduction of thin
stone technology, such as Getalit’s Getacore
and Bushboard Encore, where a thin layer of
quartz or an acrylic bonded material is
bonded to a chipboard core has made the
natural stone look far more accessible.
Embedding interesting chips of colour from
recycled glass and other materials has
brought a new design dimension to
engineered stone and solid surfaces. Pre-
fabricated components have played an
important part too, because the need for a
fabricator undoubtedly deterred some
retailers. Stone specialists such as F Jones
and PWS have taken the complication out of
the real stuff by offering a very efficient
design and fabrication service that makes
life trouble free for both the customer and
the retailer. Karonia’s Mistral is genuinely
solid all the way through and is easy to work
with - read more on pages 14/15.
Despite all this laminate is still king,
dominating the lower and mid market
sectors with 83 percent of total worktop
sales according to AMA. It has all come a
long way since your Dad (or probably
Grandad) used to buy sheets and stick
them on with glue. The laminate business
has been extremely pro-active, introducing
textures, new decors and valuable add on
products such as splashbacks.
If you want to read more about the
worktop market, AMA’s Domestic Kitchen
and Bathroom Worktop Report UK, 2011-
2015 costs £675 plus VAT, and is available

FABULOUS FANTASIESRenolit is proud to announce two individual andstriking fantasy designs as new additions to theRenolit Covaren stock range. The new RenolitCovaren Cobra is a fantasy design which picks upon the current trend towards irregular stripes andgeometric patterns.
The design is modern and contrasting, yetcreates a very homely atmosphere depending onthe colour combination used. It is most suitable forcombinations with the three colours which featurewithin the printed design itself, namely greys, coffees and blues. For example mix with RenolitCovaren Flint Grey Nat Trend or Lana Matt Grey, for a harmonious result. Try Renolit AlkorenMTO
Putty for a trendy look or either Renolit AlkorenMTO
Aqua or Wave Blue for striking contrast. The Cobraprint in combination with Melinga emboss createsa highly attractive impression of depth andtherefore follows the trend towards simple textures.
The new Moulins design is reminiscent of aconcrete structure with a subtle two colour squareprint. Given its very subtle printed design, thefinish can also be used as a pseudo solid colour. The design is very much on trend and, with itsneutral grey colour, is suitable for combinationswith various plain colours.
NEUTRAL NATURALSRenolit has announced striking textured printed designsas new additions to the Covaren 3D global stock range.Mountain Larch Cappuccino P and Luan Oak Tobaccoboth meet the demand for designs which harmonisewith up-to-date natural shades of coffee and tobacco andwill add texture and style to a variety of room settings.
Mountain Larch Cappuccino P is a deepembossed linear textured design. Restrained planksseparate alternating sections of bi-directional grainingcreating movement within the design. It will suit avariety of different furniture styles and rooms includingbedrooms, living areas and kitchens.
Luan Oak Tobacco impresses with its naturallooking 3D crosshatched design embellished with a sawcut emboss. Large planked cathedrals add structure tofinely grained sections, which alternate with stripes andgentle growth rings. The horizontal Saw Cut surfacestructure gives the tri-dimensional character of this decor.
GOLDEN WONDER...Trojan PA (46707) has a warm golden brown colour with apearl element giving added vitality to the finished result. This
modern fresh oak, in the Renolit Covaren 3D global stockrange, is an intricate design with subtle planking, fine wood-
ticking and precise detailing, bringing depth and variety tothe overall effect. The design is finished with a new woodtouch emboss giving the product a realistic natural feel. It

Kitchen design must be flexible,
simplify life for the user and pay
attention to detail. And nothing
adds to the detail of a kitchen like highly
functional and aesthetically pleasing
interior fittings. Although the oversized
wag’s palace kitchens of yesteryear are
on the wane, manufacturers and
designers agree that homeowners still
want quality products that enhance their
kitchen, both functionally and
aesthetically. For kitchen accessories, that
means upscale amenities that make the
kitchen more enjoyable to use. When it
comes to interior fittings, it is all about
adding greater accessibility.
Manufacturers of fittings such as
Blum and Kessebohmer are focusing on
solutions that will simplify life for
increasingly busy consumers. The biggest
trend relates to improving functionality
of interior fittings and accessories toward
improved ease of use. Many
manufacturers are offering more and
more accessories as standard options
rather than only as an upgrade. As a
result, many showrooms are now
updating their displays and loading them
up with accessories that the consumer
can see, feel and touch rather than
simply showing them from a brochure.
Few customers can resist the practical
lure of a Magic Corner or a fabulous pull
out larder once demonstrated.
In a well-designed kitchen,
everything has a place. Selecting the
appropriate storage solutions allows
designers to ensure that this happens,
and allows consumers to customise their
space to their specific needs.
Manufacturers agree that both drawer
and corner storage remain hot trends.
Pull out fittings bring the contents of the
cabinet out to the user, rather than the
user having to squat down and dig into
the cabinet. Full-extension drawers give a
good overview of what is in the drawer
so it is easy to find things.
Interior fittings and accessories come
in as many configurations as there are
personalities of designers and consumers.
But regardless of the style or design
space optimisation is key. Designers want
to get the most useful storage out of the
space they have to work with, and do it
in a way that blends seamlessly with the
appearance of the kitchen. Adjustability is
also important as storage items change
due to a change in shopping habits
(from shopping weekly to bulk
shopping), people moving, family
members returning to live at home, etc.
Interior fittings playan important role
in making a kitchenefficient andeasy to use.

Pull out shelves make it easy to access everything in theBlum Intivo larder - an unbeatable way to make orderout of chaos.
Space Corner makes a difficult area fully accessible.
Blum, the acknowledged experts in fittingsand storage systems, have conducted
extensive research into the way kitchensare used and how to make the best
possible use of the space inside cabinets.
Functional cabinets are the way to go,” says David Sanders,
Blum UK Sales & Marketing Director. “We buy a refrigerator or
an oven for a specific purpose, so why shouldn’t every kitchen
cabinet have a specific storage role? The watchwords for base units
are no shelves - instead the perfect solution is full extension pullouts
and drawers that give total access. By planning a kitchen interior
along these lines, you will give the consumer over 55 percent of
additional storage space when compared to a conventional kitchen
- and automatically create an
ergonomically efficient layout - what
we at Blum call Dynamic Space.”
Using units such as Blum’s
unique Space Corner and clever
fittings like the under sink and plinth
depth drawers all helps. Perfect
runner systems such as Blum’s high
load bearing Tandem (65kg) runners
and automatic opening systems such
as the Blum SERVO-DRIVE are all
important considerations for small
kitchens.

Door fronts are whatconsumers see whenthey come to look at anew kitchen. We’veasked the experts tochoose the top trends indoor styles and finishes.
THE EXPERT VIEW
Jitendra Mistry,Design Manager atTK Components, shares his views onthe doors market:
“Curves are a definite trend - they havebeen around for a few years now but arecurrently massively on the increase - this isevident in the fact that at TKC we areincluding curved options in 90 percent ofthe kitchen door ranges we areintroducing. While advancing technologyhas played a part in making curves morereadily available, it is the modern trend foropen plan living that has really beenresponsible for making curves morepopular. Consumers are increasinglyseeking to create a relaxing andwelcoming area that blends seamlesslywith the adjoining living area and curvescan help to achieve this. Curved unitsintroduced at the end of a run or a squareisland can help to merge the boundariesbetween the kitchen and living space, andinternal curves allow kitchen design toflow beautifully, adding elegance and anoverall bespoke look.
“It is true to say that challenging economicconditions have brought a slow down innew product development over the pastfew years. We are seeing variations onexisting products being introduced asopposed to complete new ranges, sohandleless doors, for example, havebecome popular. Additional accessorieshave also been added to ranges to provideconsumers with greater choice. This givesthem the option of choosing a basickitchen on a budget or splashing out on anall singing, all dancing design with plentyof accessories. High gloss slab doors are aspopular today as they were three years agoand are now available in a wider range ofcolour options.
“Neutral colours are the most popular -probably because cream has an agelessfeel and white is contemporary but safe. Our best selling Reflections high glossdoor is available in 11 colours - but thewhite and cream options represent almost60 percent of total sales. Homeowners likeneutral colours as they do not date, sothey see them as a safe option whetherthey decide to sell in the future or opt forstaying put. We are seeing a slightincrease in sales of other neutrals such asolives and beiges.
“Door design will always outweigh choiceof colour in terms of the overall look of thekitchen - even a Shaker kitchen can lookhighly contemporary with the rightstyling. The way homeowners decorateand accessorise plays a big part inachieving the bespoke, individual look.”
Lusso from TK Components is a high glosspainted door range with a striking overall
linear appearance and the option of curves.A big selection of door sizes and accessories
are available across the range, includingboth internal and external curved doors
which allow the creation of a bespoke look.Lusso White (shown right) lends itself to a
contemporary yet timeless environmentwhile Lusso Cream is a warmer alternative.

The Infinite Pure induction hob from Electrolux, the world’s first fully backlit hob, offers a dramatic centrepiece for any kitchen. That’s because the simplicity of theInfinitePure induction hob’s sleek black rectangle is retained until the hob is turnedon. That’s when the hob’s new, intuitive rotary sliders appear. The controls areinspired by professional chefs’ need for instant, precise heat control. The power levelfor a zone is selected with a single touch then fine-tuned with a separate rotaryshaped slider.
“Our InfinitePure hobs with intuitive DirectAccess sliders give you incrediblyprecise fine-tuning for cooking delicate sauces like Hollandaise,” says Sophie Davidsonof Electrolux. “Yet almost instant high heat means you can be ready to sear meat orfish in seconds.”

De Dietrich has done a lot to advance the cause of induction. The 93cm Piano zonelessinduction hob is the most sophisticated yet - and offers several different modes for flexiblecooking. The intuitive interface on the full colour TFT screen, combined with the Quick UserGuide, makes the Piano hob simple and easy to use. Time and temperature can beindividually and confidently controlled at a touch.
Expert Mode uses the entire 81cm by 40cm cooking area. Up to five differently sizedpans can be placed on the hob and it will detect the pan’s presence, wherever it is situated.Should the pan be moved anywhere on the hob, sensors will automatically ensure that thetemperature remains constant, delivering total ‘zoneless’ cooking. In Piano Mode the cookingsurface is converted to three separate cooking zones, which reflect the design of a pianokeyboard. Pans can be added to each zone, as required, and the temperature of each zonecan be precisely adjusted to suit the cooking requirements. Solo Mode is designed to emulatea professional chef’s hot all over hotplate so all pans are at the same temperature.01256 308067www.dedietrich.co.uk
