Dear brothers and
sisters in Christ,
This Sunday, December 2nd is the first Sunday of
Advent, the four-week season of the Church Year
that precedes the season of Christmas. The Church
seasons were created in order to help Christians to
focus on the major themes of salvation history.
Advent is a time of preparation for the coming of the
Lord, both in the celebration of Jesus' birth, and in
awaiting his return to bring the Kingdom of God in its
fullness.
This Sunday is also Stewardship Sunday. It seems
appropriate to offer our commitment to God on the
first Sunday of the Church’s liturgical year.
Each year the vestry (which is responsible for the
finances of the church) asks each person and family
that is part of our church community to make a
financial commitment to this church’s operating
budget. The operating budget funds everything from
the salaries of clergy and lay members of our staff, to
the ministries and missions of the church.
We give ten percent of all income to missions and
missionaries, and another five percent to support the
Anglican Diocese of the Southwest. We also fund
missions like Ciudad Nueva and the Border Fellows
directly from our operating budget.
The 8:30 a.m. service on the Second Sunday of
Advent, December 9th, will be a “Lessons and Carols”
service with Scripture readings and various musical
offerings.
The Season of Christmas is when we celebrate the
incarnation of the Eternal Word of God as Jesus of
Nazareth. It is from December 25th to Epiphany,
January 6th.
The Apostle John writes:
This is the mystery of Emmanuel, God among us through his
Son, Jesus.
Christmas Eve Services
• 5:00 p.m. – Family Service with Pageant and music with
the Praise Band.
• 7:30 and 10 p.m. – Traditional Christmas Eve Holy
Communion with Organ, Choir and El Paso Brass.
Please Note: The church office will be closed from December
25th through January 1st. and there will NOT be a 5:00 PM
service on Saturday, December 29th.
Christmas Tree
Each year, after Thanksgiving, we put up a Christmas Tree in
the Welcome Center with little cards representing a needy
child in Cd. Juarez or El Paso. The ministries that we are
supporting again this year are Onemi, Life Challenge and
Ciudad Nueva. Thank you for making Christmas special for
one of these children.
Giving in the Holiday Season
Like most churches, we rely on end of year giving to get
through the year. You may give by check, online with a credit
or debit card, or by ACH withdrawal from your bank
account. You may also give from a retirement account. If you
have questions, please call or email our financial secretary,
Karen Miller, at (915) 521-8043 or [email protected].
All gifts that are postmarked or received through Dec. 31st
are deductible in 2018 for IRS purposes.
Yours in the nativity of our Lord,
The Rev. William Cox Cobb
And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen hisglory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth. John 1:14

My ways are beyond your ways, and my thoughts are beyond your thoughts Isaiah 55:9
God has provided various ways to experience the fathomless mystery of His loving presence. Contemplative Prayer was
brought back into general practice in the 14th century by Anonymous, the author of The Cloud of Unknowing. From this wayof praying have come Centering Prayer and Christian Meditation. Join us as we experience God’s presence within us, acommunion with the indwelling trinity. Deepening our relationship with the living Christ is the focus of Contemplative
Prayer. Thursday, December 20th from 2:30 pm - 4:00 pm. We will meet at the welcome center and then go to the Mckee Chapel to
practice 20 minutes of Contemplative Prayer. Afterward, there is time to share what we are learning and how God ischanging us from within this practice. All are welcome.

Over the past month, The Good Soil youth group has had some amazing experiences and encounters with
Christ, including both the middle and high school retreats and the beginning of dwell nights. Dwell nights
happen on the first week of the month, where the youth group gets together in a long worship session to
dwell with the Holy Spirit and celebrate Jesus’ sacrifice with the Eucharist. The high school retreat was a
huge success, as we focused on intimacy with God, how to get it , how to retain it , and what’s keeping us
from it . The weekend was simultaneously convicting and encouraging, providing the necessary push to be
alone and vulnerable with our Good Father. Students left feeling l ike a weight had been l ifted off of their
shoulders and they had a new pathway to reach the Lord. That’s so amazing! On a similar note, students on
the middle school retreat were invited to remember who they are in Christ and not to identify themselves
with the vacancy of worldly things. Powerful encounters with the Lord occurred, which made an impact on
the kids as they began the process of looking at themselves, this world, and Jesus Christ in significantly
different ways.
Upcoming in the month of December is the OneThing Conference in Kansas City, Missouri , where students
are invited to be engulfed by the Holy Spirit . In the past, OneThing has been incredibly influential in many
of our students’ walks with Christ. The conference exposes students to an enormous fellowship of
thousands of people all worshiping God together and pushes them to build community within everyone
gathered, as well as among themselves.
In other news, we are in need of some male volunteers to help out with the youth group activities on
Wednesday nights from 6-8pm. If you’re interested, please email us at [email protected].
Please pray for us and for our students to continue encountering God and the endless mercies and
overflowing grace He offers us.
A heartfelt thank you to all St. Clements parishioners and friends who, with loving hearts and hands, filled shoeboxes for
Operation Christmas Child. Because of your generosity, we are able to add 164 shoebox gifts to those which will be sent to
children in countries where they are most needed. As the boxes lead a child to hearing the Good News of Jesus Christ, possibly
for the first time, that message is very often shared with family and friends so that every shoebox gift is an excellent resource for
evangelism and discipleship. As contributors, we share in this missionary work, obeying Christ’s instruction to his disciples:
“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of theFather and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything
I have commanded you.” Matthew 28:19

"Surviving the Holidays" luncheon and seminar was a great hit on November 14th, 2018. Attendees were
reinforced to face the holiday season during their difficult time of grief. This annual event is an extension of
the hope and comfort we offer during the remainder of the year.
On October 10th, 2018 from 1:30 to 3:00 pm in the conference room GriefShare 2.0 began. Due to a
holiday break on December 26th for Christmas, this session will extend into the new year and end on
January 23rd , 2019.

Come one, come all! This is the PERFECT season for people of all ages to come and check
out the the church library! It is located right down the hall, opposite from the water
fountain. We have many many resources for Advent and Christmas. We also have a vast
array of short stories, movies, devotional books, children's books, novels, books on family
activities... you name it! Please come in and check out our great collection! All of these
items get very lonely for 10-11 months of the year (although, yes, there are several people
who check them out all year long). Our library volunteers work hard to keep our collection
in tip-top shape. The library is open to all visitors whenever the church is open. Our
fantastic library volunteers (Pat Garven, Margaret Meyer, Moni Ward, Geneva Williams,
and Anne Walker) would be pleased to assist you in finding a good read to enjoy this cozy
holiday season. Come on in!
