This year Sign Istanbul (2017) was co-located with Printtek (2017). So booths related to signage were in the three nice halls of Sin Istanbul; and booths related to toner printers were mostly in the adjacent halls of Printtek.

M. Emin Ates has many years experience in RICOH technology. He kindly walked with me over to the RICOH booth and introduced me to the RICOH team and asked if they could print the samples for me. The following FLAAR Reports shows the color quality and range of color produced by the RICOH Pro C9100 color production printer.

Ricoh is gradually moving more into wide-format inkjet printers, but our focus during Sign Istanbul 2017 was doing test printing on toner printer, especially short-run digital press level.

You can see the RICOH Pro C9100 at the left and at the corner of the booth the efi fiery RIP server. You can also notice that Ricoh had a sophisticated modern booth design.

Here is the efi fiery server; this is the RIP which powers most top brands of toner printers around the world.

We print these on A3 size paper, the machine folds them (here are the folded results).

We then have them cut into A5 size, so two books result from a single run.

Each expo tends to have a different model on exhibit. This is the RICOH Pro C9100.

The RICOH printer had pretty good paper in their machine. I estimate it was coated (at least for the two large prints they did).

No banding, no splotching, no visible defects. Frankly toner is already for several years as good if not better in some respects than inkjet short-run digital presses.

Birds and fruits come in a diverse range of various natural colors.

The RICOH Pro C9100 printed all these colors in an acceptable manner.

The RICOH booth individual who was printing, on his own initiative, kindly printed one A3 on thicker stock for display and one on magnetic material.

Here is the magnetic material on the refrigerator in the office kitchen facility. Since we have between 25 and 30 employees we have a kitchen for them to use, and two separate dining rooms (one for the printer evaluation team; and another dining room for the MayanToons graphic designers and Mayan flora & fauna research team).

Magnetic material would be so so so helpful for printing ABC and also for printing phonics

- ba- be- bi- bo- buPlus it would be awesome to have the local birds and animals that should be protected (especially their fragile eco-systems), each on an A3 or A4 magnetic sheet.

Having a large area of a single color helps you recognize that toner printers of the technology of today are as good as if not better than inkjet printers. Inkjet printers have problems of banding.

Not every inkjet print has banding, but too many do (usually because nozzles are clogged. There is a second kind of banding caused when the pinch-rollers and grit-rollers are not moving the media perfectly).

Here are syllables printed on a wide-format. But a Ricoh can also print these on magnetic material which would enable us to donate material to schools of the Mayan people in remote jungle mountain areas of Guatemala.

Sheila and Maybeli are helping us learn how to teach children their ages how to read first ABC and then read syllables. Then we can assist entire school districts in remote areas.

Sign Istanbul 2017 had a bonus this year: co-located with PrinttekEvery three years there is a separate expo, Printtek, the same days as Sign Istanbul. This year (2017) the two expos were in the identical expo center and the halls of each expo connected with each other.

So even though Sign Istanbul is organized by iFO and Printtek is organized by a completely different company, the two expos were totally and comfortably co-located.

For 2018 only Sign Istanbul will feature the nice office printers and short run digital presses, so we hope to see a Ricoh booth at Sign Istanbul 2018.
