NMPPS SCHOOL NEWSLETTER

January has been another busy month here at Nelson Mandela Park PS. We started the New Year by having what is known as a Dis-trict Review. The District Review is part of an evaluation process all TDSB schools go through ap-proximately every 4 years. The District Review process entails a team of senior TDSB o!cials walking through the school

examining the school environment and the learning that is occurring in classrooms. We are proud to say that our school review came back very positive and the review team cited many great things happening

here at Nelson Mandela Park PS. In par-ticular they saw clear evi-dence of our sta"

working hard to move teaching and learning in math forward so our students can have higher achievement when it comes to numeracy. The review team also made mention that though our school is located in a community that has signif-icant needs one does not get that sense as they go through our building. We have done a tremendous job of bridging the "opportunity gap" for all our stu-dents. We have created a school that is incredibly well resourced; a school that utilizes a wide array of interventions and tools to support learning. Again of particular note was our use of technology since our school has a 2:1 mobile computing ratio (for ev-

ery 2 students we have 1 mobile computing device such as a netbook, ipad, or macbook). The review team did cite that we could do more as a school to provide written feedback for our students, so there is more of a clear record of what teachers are looking for in order for students to improve their learning. In education lingo this is known as "de-scriptive feedback" and it is something as a sta" we are committed to improving upon. The review team also spoke to the opportunities we are providing our Intensive Support Program learners such as our students in our Developmental Disability (DD) programs. They were impressed by the professional learning opportunities our DD sta" have along with the experential learning our sta" are providing for our DD students such as swim-ming, and partnering with Up-per Canada College.A huge thank you to the sta" and students of Nelson Mandela Park PS. They collectively did a wonderful job in representing our school and showing that we are putting all the extra supports we receive to good use.

In addition, we are proud to say that our Snoezelen Room is now operational. This new space is a very powerful support to assist our DD students. Our Snoezelen Room will allow us to better meet the sensory needs of our DD students, and help calm them so they are better pre-pared for their learning. As we continue to look for ways to celebrate the success of our students we just recently had a "Caught Caring" draw celebrating students who have been showing positive character attributes. The 14 lucky draw winners were treated to a pizza lunch and then a free brand new bicycle! We worked with a private donor to get this amazing prize for our students. As report cards will be coming out in mid February we want to celebrate academic success and thus will be initiating a new Honour Roll and "On a Roll" system. Any student with an "A" or 80 percent average will be placed on our Honour Roll. We will also will have an “On a Roll” list for 2 students in each class who did not achieve 80 percent, but have been giving a full e"ort and have shown great improvement with their learn-ing. All these students will be honoured at an assembly in early March. Also at that time we will give out subject awards for every grade in addition to the following:

S!"#"$ %& M'()*+' A,'#) (-$#%(. /%00"$0*($ $% *12"$3 '() -%/"'+ 42-$"/*) C2+$2#* %& C'#"(. A,'#) (5*+!- 62"+) %2# -/5%%+ “C2+$2#* %& C'#"(.”) E/%S/5%%+- A,'#) (E/%S/5%%+- +*')*#-5"!) STEAM A,'#) (*7/*++*(/* "( STEAM) We will do the same sort of celebration for K-7 at the end of June too (the Grade 8s will have their usual awards at their graduation ceremony). It should be noted that our Culture of Caring Award will also be given to 1 sta" member and community member as voted on by sta", students and our School Council each term.

As always thanks for your support. If you have any ques-tions or concerns about anything or want to mention some-thing great that was not included in our news#ash please come and talk to us.

He was in prison for 27 years and when he came out the world was there supporting his release. He became the $rst black president of South Africa and changed the laws so that black and white people could live together. He came to our school in 2001, our school was renamed Nelson Mandela Park Public School. Our school is lucky to be named a"er Nelson Mandela. We can learn to be good citizens like Nelson. Nelson Mandela was a great man, I learned a lot from him. One of the things I learned is that “edu-cation is the most powerful weapon which we can use to change the world”. People remember him because he changed the law to remove segregation between black and white people. Everybody should be equal.

On February 11th it will be an important anniversary of our namesake Nelson Mandela. He was released from prison a"er 27 years on that day, there were hundreds of black and white people waiting for his release. A"er a few years he ran a campaign for presidential elections and he won. But unfortunately he died in December 2013 on the day his movie $rst premiered all over the world. At least we can still remember him by honouring the 25th anniversary of his release from prison. Guess what? I am just about to tell you what is teamwork and the importance of it. Teamwork is not worrying about your work at all. It is when you discuss and share your thoughts and come to an amazing conclusion to that speci$c goal. Teamwork is all about giving others the equality and the respect that person deserves and also what you would expect from your teammates while it’s your turn. Teamwork is when everyone supports and encourages each other’s opinion/thoughts. You should not make the person who’s talking feel uncomfortable, instead listen to their ideas and skills. Also give them appropriate feedback when they are done. The meaning of teamwork is when you work together and support one another’s ideas. There shouldn’t be any reason a teammate of yours doesn’t feel welcome to the team. Teamwork should be helping others on showing their amazing abilities of what they are capable of. So students don’t just sit there after reading this, go show some amazing team-work and who knows, you might be the Student of the Month. Show teamwork and I guarantee you will be the shining star of the month. What are you waiting for?! GOOD LUCK!
