The Honorary Degrees
Doctor of Laws — Werner William Schroeder
He has been recognized throughout his long career both for ability in the practice of law and for
devotion to public affairs. As legislative adviser to a number of governors of the State of Illinois,
he played an important part in advancing legislative and electoral reform. He has served as
president of the Chicago Bar Association, as vice-chairman of the Republican National Com-mittee, and as chairman of the Chicago division of the National Conference of Christians andJews. His services as attorney for the Public Administrator of Cook County and as vice-chairmanof the Chicago Transit Authority Board have been marked by his characteristic public-spirited
concern for the general good.
Presented by Harold A. Smith, Trustee of Northwestern University
Doctor of Humane Letters — Joseph Wood Krutch
He has excelled in many roles. As a teacher — at his retirement he was Brander Matthews Pro-
fessor of Dramatic Literature at Columbia University. As an editor and writer for The Nation —he was a leader among practicing critics of the contemporary theatre. As a scholar and literary
historian — he has written voluminously with authority and grace. As a philosopher — in 1929
in The Modern Temper he brilliantly analyzed the condition of man in the modern world; nowin the 1950's he seeks to discover and to set forth the quality and nature of life. His learning
is wide and deep; by the grace of his intellectual power, imagination, and humanity he has usedit for the benefit of all.
Presented by J. Lyndon Shanley, Professor of English
Doctor of Sacred Theology — Charles Casper Noble
One of the dedicated religious leaders of our time, he has devoted his remarkable powers of
spiritual inspiration to the service of young people. Famous for his eloquent and moving ad-
dresses at the University Methodist Church of Syracuse, he nevertheless accepted the call to
become Dean of the Chapel at Syracuse University. In his new position he has shown unusualability for understanding and meeting the religious needs of the college student, and was chosenthe first president of the National Association of College and University Chaplains in recognition
of his influence and achievement. A prominent director of the Young Men's Christian Asso-
ciation, his ministrations to young people have extended far beyond the college campus and the
limits of his own community. His book. Faith for the Future, reflects the positive character of
his contributions to the religious life.
With the inauguration of Sunday Chapel services at Northwestern in 1947, he was selected as
the first visiting preacher. At the strong urging of our students he has returned each year since
that time.
Presented by James C. McLeod, Professor of History and
Literature of Religions, and Dean of Students

NINETY-NINTH COMMENCEMENT
Doctor of Laws — Fred G. Gurley
Chairman of the board and chief executive officer of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe RailwayCompany. For over fifty years he has been actively engaged in his chosen profession, rising froma minor clerkship to the position of leadership which he now holds. The international reputa-tion of the Santa Fe as one of the world's greatest transportation systems testifies to the imagi-native skill with which he has guided it; his election as director of both the Association of
Western Railways and the Association of American Railroads evidences the esteem in which heis held by his colleagues and competitors in other companies.
He has served as consultant to the Federal Government, as director or trustee of important civic,
financial, and educational organizations. He has touched our national life at many points andalways with a contagiously constructive influence.
We honor him today for the breadth and significance of his accomplishments; we welcome himto this platform as an Associate of Northwestern, a staunch and gracious friend of the Univer-sity; and we acclaim him as a stalwart representative of what we proudly name the AmericanWay of Life.
Presented by Franklyn Bliss Snyder, President Emeritus of
the University, and Life Trustee

His leading role in establishing psychiatric medicine as one of the major branches of medicalscience has brought him acclaim as a medical statesman and scientist. He has served his pro-
fession in many capacities — as a Professor of Psychiatry, as Dean of the Loyola University Medi-cal School, as chief of the neuro-psychiatric division of the Medical Bureau of the Navy, as anofficer in professional associations, and now as psychiatrist-in-chief at the Hartford Institute for
Living. In research, teaching, and administration, he has combined a scientific with a warmlyhuman approach to the problems of mental health.

and Chairman of the Department of Psychology
Doctor of Laws — George Frost Kennan
During his career in the American foreign service, he has occupied many critical posts abroad, culminating in his appointment to the American embassy in the Soviet Union. At home he hasserved in various capacities in the Department of State, notably as adviser to the Secretary of
State. This broad experience, coupled with painstaking research, is reflected in his recent bookson American foreign policy; his most recent work, Russia Leaves the War, has been honoredwith the Bancroft Prize, the National Book Award, and the Pulitzer Prize. As practitioner,
historian, and theorist in the field of international relations, he has devoted himself to the
strengthening of our international position through the exercise of informed and enlightened

recitals on television have brought to millions of viewers a new appreciation of the complexbeauty of serious music. He has attained renown as conductor of the chief symphony orchestras
of America and Europe, as a teacher, and as a composer of scores for musical plays, ballets, andsymphonies. He has achieved the rare distinction of great popular success in the service of thehighest ideals of his art.
Presented by Leonard P. Spacek, Trustee of Northwestern University

Presented by Malcolm Dole, Professor of Chemistry
Doctor of Laws — Christian Archibald Herter
Legislator, governor, diplomat, and statesman, he has brought to his new post as Under Secre-
tary of State a lifelong devotion to the cause of peace and international understanding. Con-ceiving the art of politics to be worthy of a citizen's highest qualities of mind and spirit, hehas been faithful to his ideal of civic responsibility throughout his service in the Massachusetts
legislature, in the Congress of the United States, and as Governor of the Commonwealth of
Massachusetts. Few men have more completely exemplified in their careers the wise injunction
of our earliest statesmen that public office is a public trust.
