Brain Teaser of the
week
You are the bus driver. At your first stop, you pick up 29
people. On your second stop, 18 of those 29 people get off,
and at the same time 10 new passengers arrive. At your next
stop, 3 of those 10 passengers get off, and 13 new passengers
come on. On your fourth stop 4 of the remaining 10
passengers get off, 6 of those new 13 passengers get off as
well, then 17 new passengers get on. What is the colour of
the bus driver's eyes?
The solution to this teaser will be in next
weeks news letter. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
The solution to last weeks teaser: Answer:
There is no missing dollar from the original $30 because after
getting $1 back, the three travellers had paid a total of $27 for
their room ($9 each), not $30. Out of that $27, the hotel has
$25 and the clerk kept the remaining $2. If you still want to
work from the original $30, the travellers have $3, the hotel
has $25 and the bellboy has $2. The misleading part is adding
the bellboy's $2 to the $27, when in fact it should be
subtracted.

Famous quotes
Quote: Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.
Who is Martin Luther King Jr?
Martin Luther King Jr
Martin Luther King, Jr. (January 15, 1929 – April 4, 1968) was an American clergyman, activist,
and leader in the African-American Civil Rights Movement. He is best known for his role in the
advancement of civil rights using nonviolent civil disobedience. King has become a national icon in
the history of American progressivism.[1]
A Baptist minister, King became a civil rights activist early in his career. He led the
1955Montgomery Bus Boycott and helped found the Southern Christian Leadership
Conference(SCLC) in 1957, serving as its first president. With the SCLC, King led an unsuccessful
struggle against segregation in Albany, Georgia, in 1962, and organized nonviolent protests
in Birmingham, Alabama, that attracted national attention following television news coverage of
the brutal police response. King also helped to organize the 1963 March on Washington, where he
delivered his "I Have a Dream" speech. There, he established his reputation as one of the greatest
orators in American history. He also established his reputation as a radical, and became an object
of the Federal Bureau of Investigation'sCOINTELPRO for the rest of his life. FBI agents
investigated him for possible communistties, recorded his extramarital liaisons and reported on
them to government officials, and on one occasion, mailed King a threatening anonymous letter
that he interpreted as an attempt to make him commit suicide.
On October 14, 1964, King received the Nobel Peace Prize for combating racial inequality
through nonviolence. In 1965, he and the SCLC helped to organize the Selma to Montgomery
marches and the following year, he took the movement north to Chicago. In the final years of his
life, King expanded his focus to include poverty and the Vietnam War, alienating many of his
liberal allies with a 1967 speech titled "Beyond Vietnam". King was planning a national occupation
of Washington, D.C., called the Poor People's Campaign. King was assassinated on April 4, 1968,
in Memphis, Tennessee. His death was followed by riots in many U.S. cities. Allegations
that James Earl Ray, the man convicted of killing King, had been framed or acted in concert with
government agents persisted for decades after the shooting, and the jury of a 1999 civil trial
found Loyd Jowers to be complicit in a conspiracy against King.
King was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the Congressional Gold
Medalposthumously. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day was established as a U.S. federal holiday in
1986. Hundreds of streets in the U.S. have been renamed in his honor. A memorial statueon
the National Mall was opened to the public in 2011.

Red Stone Hills and adjacent properties are situated on the fringe of the semi-arid plains of the Little Karoo. The most important
habitats for birds include (a) the open karroid veld dominated by s tunted trees, mainly Gwarrie Euclea undulata, and low succulent
shrubs; (b) the dense thickets on the hillsides, where the rainfall is higher; (c) the fynbos which occurs on the summits of the hills
and where the Waboom Protea nitida dominates; (d) several permanent streams, lined by both indigenous and alien vegetation,
which transverse the area providing a habitat for birds that do not normally occur in this dry environment; (e) man-made habitats
such as the lucerne fields and poplar woods which support birds that would not otherwise enter the Little Karoo.
The best time for birders to visit the area is after substantial rains in spring and early summer. No bird check-list is ever complete
and the compilers would appreciate receiving information on additional species that have been positively identified.
BIRD OF THE WEEK
Birds spotted at Redstone Hills and environs.
Names as used in Sasol – The Larger Illustrated Guide to Birds
of Southern Africa: 2nd
edition 2005.
ID: 63
Species: Black-headed Heron
Spotted: recorded January to December; breeds, resident.
Black headed Heron
The Black-headed Heron (Ardea melanocephala) is a wading bird of the heron family Ardeidae, common throughout much of sub-Saharan Africa and Madagascar. It is mainly resident but some west African birds move further north in the rainy season.
This species usually breeds in the wet season in colonies in trees, reedbeds or cliffs. It builds a bulky stick nest and lays 2–4 eggs.
It often feeds in shallow water, spearing fish, or frogs with its long, sharp bill. It will also hunt well away from water, taking large insects, small mammals, and birds. It will wait motionless for prey, or slowly stalk its victim.
The Black-headed Heron is a large bird, standing 85 cm tall, and it has a 150 cm wingspan. It is nearly as large as the Grey Heron, which it resembles in appearance, although it is generally darker. Its plumage is largely grey above, and paler grey below. It has a powerful dusky bill.
The flight is slow, with its neck retracted. This is characteristic of herons and bitterns, and distinguishes them from storks, cranes, and spoonbills, which extend their necks. The white underwing coverts are striking in flight.
The call is a loud croaking.

Over the last couple of years, MTB stage racing has reached a new
high with 2 or 3 day events becoming increasingly popular. With
this in mind, Ecobound has developed the Rooiberger, as a classic
enduro MTB event during the long weekend in June. With various
distances (93km, 45km, and 15km) is there something for everyone

of the weekend will see an exciting time trial challenge over a
distance of 32km. Other activities for the smaller members of the
family will also be available. The aim is to involve all members of
the family to take part in this event, as cycling has clearly become a
family activity with the introduction of 2 Trail Running distances as
part of the weekend. The event takes place at Calitzdorp Spa, in the
Klein Karoo. The Spa see most riders staying over for the weekend,
as this is a convenient start and finish for all the distances during the
event and a excellent venue and family resort
Saturday 1 will kick off with a 93km Enduro which will take riders over the winding Rooiberg Pass and through the Assegaaybosch Nature
reserve. Rooiberg Lodge offers an exciting spectator point on this route with various amenities available and a floating bridge. Other fun events are
available with distances of 45km and a fun ride of 15km. The 45km is an enjoyable and challenging route. The 15 km is for the youngsters of the
family, with the route staying in close proximity of the Spa.
Sunday 2 is the eventful and exciting time trial over 32km. In the afternoon there will be a X-Country race on a challenging track trough the resort.
This forms part of the Provincial X-Country series.
Monday 3 see the introduction of a Trail Run over two distances 17km and 7km.
With the Fuel Zone as entertainment area, suitably situated next to both hot and cold swimming pools, post race relaxing time is in abundance.
Grab a beer, beanbag and hotdog and relax to some live music! This promise to be an exciting and enjoyable weekend for all!

o Special days in June
16 Junie - Fathersday Father's Day is a celebration honouring fathers and celebrating fatherhood, paternal bonds, and the influence of fathers in society.
Many countries celebrate it on the third Sunday of June, but it is also celebrated widely on other days. Father's Day was created to complement Mother's Day, a celebration that honours mothers and motherhood.
What Is A Dad? A dad is someone who wants to catch you before you fall but instead picks you up, brushes you off, and lets you try again.
A dad is someone who wants to keep you from making mistakes but instead lets you find your own way, even though his heart breaks in silence when you get hurt.
A dad is someone who holds you when you cry, scolds you when you break the rules, shines with pride when you succeed, and has faith in you even when you fail...
Make sure you spoil this wonderful man on Sunday. See the Port Festival program for excellent ideas.
16 June - Youth day – what is it all about? Youth Day - 16 June - was previously known as Soweto Day. In 1975 protests started in African schools after a directive from the previous Bantu Education Department that Afrikaans had to be used on an equal basis with English as a language of instruction in secondary schools. The issue however, was not so much the Afrikaans as the whole system of Bantu education which was characterised by separate schools and universities, poor facilities, overcrowded classrooms and inadequately trained teachers. On the 16th June in 1976, more than 20 000 pupils from Soweto began a protest march. In the wake of clashes with the police, and the violence that ensued during the next few weeks, approximately 700 hundred people, many of them youths, were killed and property destroyed. Youth Day commemorates these events.
21 June - Solstice: what is a solstice?
A solstice is an astronomical event that occurs twice each year
as the Sunreaches its highest or lowest excursion relative to
the celestial equator on thecelestial sphere. As a result, on the
day of the solstice, the Sun appears to have reached its highest
or lowest annual altitude in the sky above the horizon at local
solar noon. The word solstice is derived from the Latin sol (sun)
and sistere (to stand still), because at the solstices, the Sun
stands still in declination; that is, the seasonal movement of the
Sun's path (as seen from Earth) comes to a stop before
reversing direction. The solstices, together with the equinoxes,
are connected with the seasons. In many cultures the solstices
mark either the beginning or the midpoint of winter and
summer.
The term solstice can also be used in a broader sense, as the
date (day) when this occurs. The day of the solstice is either
the longest day of the year (in summer) or the shortest day of
the year (in winter) for any place outside of the tropics.

CALITZDORP NOT LOOKING FESTIVE ENOUGH
We received a number of complaints last year about the town not looking ‘festive’ enough, also complaints about Calitzdorp not looking festive
at all until the last couple of days before the festival. I know that the Dream Project people are always working towards to improving Calitzdorp
– maybe we can all make an effort to help. Zelma also suggested colourful fabric flags in main streets of Calitzdorp. We have an extra banner
available this year – I am investigating putting it up in Oudtshoorn. Please let us have your input and ideas.

De Krans Ons is tans besig om ons Vlagskip De Krans Red Stone Reserve 2006 teen ‘n ongelooflike prys van R35 te verkoop. Prys was R60. Tel: 044 213 3314
De Krans Wine Cellar’s award-winning Cape Vintage Reserve Port 2009 was another wine from the Klein Karoo in the "Top 100". The De Krans Cape Vintage Reserve Port 2009 is produced using 62% Touriga Nacional, 36% Tinta Barocca and 2% Souzão grapes, and was aged for 22 months in old French oak. Winemaker Boets Nel describes their flagship port as having a vibrant plum colour, with dense aromas of prune, spice and tobacco. This premium port displays fleshy, chewy mouthful of flavours, showing tannic grip, concentrated red fruit nuances, and a firm structure ensuring considerable longevity, with the potential to mature for a further 20 to 25 years. Retailing for approximately R240 per bottle, savour this premium port on its own, or serve with stronger cheeses. This vintage was awarded a 5-star rating in the 2012 Platter's South African Wine Guide, as well as walking away with the title Overall Champion at the 2011 Southern Cape Bottled Wine Show For more information on the wines and ports of De Krans Wine Cellar, feel free to contact the cellar at 044 213 3314 or [email protected].
Boplaas
Boplaas again joins the “Top 100” list
Boplaas Family Vineyards in Calitzdorp are proud to announce that a wine once again has been included in the “Top 100” South African wines
of 2013. The host of international and local judges, award Boplaas a spot in the “Top 100” for the Boplaas Cape Vintage Reserve Port 2010.
Crafted from a quartet of Douro varietals and in the traditional drier Vintage style; the Boplaas Cape Vintage Reserve Port 2010 with its inky
black colour, heady aromatic bouquet, intense spice and grippy tannins, will evolve in bottle over the next three decades or more - for those who
are willing to exhibit restrain. A part from being nominated in the “Top 100” 2013, this youthful Cape Vintage Reserve received a double gold at
Veritas in 2012 and 4 ½ stars in Platter Guide 2013. Best enjoyed decanted with a selection of charcuterie, hearty venison dishes or after a meal
accompanied with cheeses, dried fruits, nuts and preserves.
Apart from the stellar performance of Boplaas's Cape Ports, the table wines produced from the traditional Douro varietals offer a glimpse into the
future of this exceptional terroir, especially the Ring of Rocks (newly released 2011 vintage, an innovative blend of Touriga Nacional, Merlot and
Cabernet), the Boplaas Tinta Chocolat 2011 (rated as best red wine at the Cape Port & Wine Challenge 2012) and Woolworth’s Boplaas
Portuguese Connection red blend.

Boplaas Family Vineyards – Tending vines & crafting wines, since 1880
Enjoy a little rest bit from the rush, with the
Boplaas’s Stoepsit Sauvignon Blanc
hen you think of the houses of the quaint Karoo towns dotted along
the Route 62 and beyond, one striking attribute that all share in
common is the presence of a “stoep” or wrap-around patio. These
“stoeps” serve as gathering places for friends, family and passers-by
where stories are told, problem are solved and where you can take
refuge from the day’s toil.
To celebrate Boplaas’s patriarch Ouma Roeline’s 90th vintage, her
love of Sauvignon Blanc, the innumerable afternoons she’s
entertained friends and family on her “stoep” and the joy this has
brought her, it is only apt that from this vintage the Boplaas
Sauvignon Blanc will be henceforth be bottled as the Boplaas
Stoepsit Sauvignon Blanc.
The first Sauvingon Blanc crafted at Boplaas was in 1982 and since then Roeline’s son, Carel Nel, has each vintage attempted to craft the ideal
“stoep” companion for his mother and her friends. Along the line, Boplaas were the first to craft Sauvignon from high up in the Outeniqua range
at Ruiterbosch; experimenting with the Blanc Fumé wine style; crafting site specific Sauvignon’s from exceptional coastal vineyards and have
also managed to craft back-to-back South African National Young Wine Show Champion Sauvignon Blanc in 2009 and 2010.
The Boplaas Stoepsit 2013 is an entirely affable Sauvignon with its zippy citrus, tropical fruit flavours and low alcohol level making it the ideal
partner to light fare, canapés, lazy sunny afternoon gatherings on the “stoep” or simply sipped on its own while enjoying another glorious African
sunset. The Stoepsit Sauvignon 2013 is available from the Boplaas cellar door in Calitzdorp and the Cool Bay tasting room in Groot Brak River
just off the N2 near Mossel Bay, for a pocket pleasing R35 per bottle.
For more information about the Boplaas range of table wines, award winning Cape fortifieds and brandy please visit www.boplaas.co.za; give us
a call on 044-2133326, send us a mail [email protected], tweet us @Boplaas1880 or simply come visit us at our cellar door in Calitzdorp.
