The Drivers
8
The Role of the City of Toronto
CATALYST: The innovative & proactive force in developing the initiative
INCUBATOR: Gave life to the initiative: resources in cash and in kind
COLLABORATOR: Pulled together stakeholders to seek a common mandate
PARTNER: A meaningful mix of vision, expertise and neutrality
RUDDER: Articulating a direction forward in growing Toronto and the FSS as a Global Hub for Education and Talent (The Deloitte Report, Boston Consulting Group research, GFCI, etc.)
9
From the outset the City of Toronto has been the:
The Role of Government
Provincial: Financial support for the CoE, and various project funding to attract and promote business
Federal: Smaller amounts to support community building
Both levels now play a more significant role as the TFSA gets an expanded role
Both levels place a premium on cross-sectoral collaboration among key stakeholders such as industry and education
10
Government as a strategic partner:
The Role of Educators/Trainers
Local educational/training institutions have:
Been eager and actively engaged with industry and government Been a driver for aligning educational/training programs to the talent
development needs of the sector Provided expertise and considerable information sharing on FSS-
related curricula Been the bedrock through their active participation and volunteerism
at all phases of the initiative
11
From the outset:
The Role of Industry
The financial services employers have been:
Providing critical information needed by the City and government on talent trends in the FSS
Advocates for aligning educational/training programs to their talent development needs
Transparent in sharing the talent challenges they face now and potentially in the future
Prioritizing the areas of greatest need to provide a focused approach to addressing talent gaps
12
From the outset:
The Integrative Approach
13
The Human Factor
The Human Touch at the point of origination:
The “intrapreneur” The “writer of the music score” The idea generator
The Human Touch at the point of growth and expansion: The “entrepreneur” The “conductor” The politician
