always a malthouse
The malthouselane complex will occupy a property which is actually an allotment of land on Harley Street (being #1 Harley Street). It was first developed by a well known Nelsonian – Thomas Field who established a brewery known as the ‘Collingwood Street Brewery’ in 1857. He onsold this business to the Harley Brothers in 1871. Brewing and malting was quite the thing in those days and a number of breweries consumed huge quantities of malt up and down the country.
A maltster and brewer named George Hogg took ownership of the brewery and malthouse in 1894 – renaming it the ‘City Brewery’. This was the last brewery to occupy the site, which continued its operations well into the 1930’s.
Parts of the malthouse existed into the 1960’s with local businesses utilising its vast storage capacity. However, it finally made way to more recent development in the 1980’s.
