M.W. Kellogg Ltd (MWKL) is a full-serviceengineering contractor primarily serving thehydrocarbon marketplace. Their impressiveHQ and worldwide operations centre inGreenford, Middlesex employs around 1500people in a 9-storey high, 178,500 square feetbuilding.

Following a consultation with Scion technicalservices, and an in-depth assessment of heatdemands and requirements, a decision wasmade to replace the rather outdated heatingequipment with 1.9MW system comprisingthree Buderus SB 615 640kW stainless steelcondensing boilers. Scion’s Malcolm Bavinadvised on the options, “We were keen tospecify high quality boilers with reliability andlongevity being key factors. The Buderus SBrange of stainless steel condensing boilerswas highly competitive on capital costs andoffered excellent potential for fuel costsavings. We were also very impressed withthe Buderus approach to business, especiallywith regards to technical advice and ongoingsupport”.

The new design incorporates an improvedhydraulic layout using a low loss header andindividual shunt pumps for each boiler, whichreplaced the existing large common shuntpump. This arrangement gives simplifiedcontrol over the flow through the boilers andsignificant savings in electrical powerconsumption.

For MWKL a key requirement was to also toreduce the building’s carbon footprint. “Wewanted the latest in high efficiency to reducecarbon and NOx emissions in line with theforthcoming Building Regulations upgrade duein 2010” says Les Hill Building Officer forMWKL. “We believe we have made all theright decisions to achieve this goal”. BuderusSB boilers, as used for this installation, areincluded on the Carbon Trust's EnergyTechnology List which has allowed MWKL toalso apply for an ECA grant for its investmentin energy-saving equipment.
