There’s something about this place that will pull you in. You’ll know once you experience it that this is not your average university. Find out more about how Mount Royal will help you reach your full potential and why you belong here.
Welcome to the Class of 2020.

You’ve got questions, an innovative mind and a thirst to be part of something exciting in the classroom.
At Mount Royal, your professors connect with you face-to-face. They know your name and they engage with you through hands-on-learning techniques in classroom settings that are intimate and personal — our average class size is only 30 students.
Meet history professors Joe Anderson and Jennifer Pettit, for example, who use a unique approach to teach students about the American Revolution. Sure, they use traditional lectures and discussions to engage in the classroom, but they also captivate students at a whole other level — through role play in character, where patriots, Loyalists and other revolutionary factions vie for control.

Mount Royal is well known for getting students out of the classroom and into settings that broaden learning. There’s no better way to augment your education — and your resume — than with real-world experience.
You might complete a work placement to get valuable experience or tackle a research project alongside a faculty member. These opportunities attract students from across the spectrum of programs offered.
Take Bachelor of Science student Lindsay Reynolds, for example. She initially came to MRU because of the small class sizes, but quickly realized the hands-on lab setting was an even bigger advantage.
As a geology student, she was inspired by her professor’s passion for the Burgess Shale Formation. Together, they are working with small, 500-million-year-old fossils first discovered in 1899. Both are excited that they may be on the trail to interesting new discoveries. The pair intend to publish a paper on their findings.
MAKE AN IMPACT
We’re the proud home of a vibrant and top-ranked chapter of Enactus, an international non-profit student organization dedicated to global empowerment and community philanthropy.
Students from across campus tackle meaningful community projects, network with peers across Canada, and compete for bragging rights at regional and national competitions.
“I’ve seen through Enactus that there are people my age doing amazing things all around the world, and I gained the confidence to see how I can make real, sustainable change too.”

GET INVOLVED IN RESEARCH
It’s rare to find undergraduate students doing research alongside faculty in most Canadian universities. At Mount Royal, it’s the norm. You might work one-on-one with faculty and learn the skills you need to do meaningful research.
Our faculty members often bring their research into the classroom. Whether they demonstrate their cutting-edge work or directly involve students in projects, you’ll have an opportunity to be a part of it.
Our students also co-publish with faculty, present at conferences and take discovery to new heights.
Kristin Milloy is already making her mark on the medical research field. The fourth year Bachelor of Science student works alongside Adrienne Benediksson, PhD, to study the function of astrocytes, which could eventually assist those healing from brain and spinal injuries.
Providing undergraduates with research opportunities at the community and international level is another example of how Mount Royal delivers on its commitment to being outcome-focused through personalized learning and quality teaching.
PRESENT YOUR RESEARCH
Mount Royal’s annual Student Research Day gives students the chance to present research to an audience and build greater awareness of their studies. In 2015, topics ranged from midwifery to hydraulic fracturing to bus shelter vandalism.

FIND YOUR PATH
Making the transition to university is exciting but can sometimes seem overwhelming. At Mount Royal, you’ll find many opportunities to connect with peers and get the support you need. From academic to spiritual, the resources to help you achieve your goals are abundant.
One example is the Iniskim Centre, which supports Aboriginal students in strengthening academic and social connections. Through cultural, spiritual and academic advising, mentoring and tutoring programs, and ample resources, the Iniskim Centre ensures that the challenges of university won’t stand in the way of your success.
“The support began as soon as I thought about going to Mount Royal,” says Michelle Fournie, Bachelor of Communications — Public Relations, 2013. “I found people and organizations who could answer my questions, make me comfortable and help me grow.”
Along with roles in the Students’ Association, Fournie became involved in the Iniskim Centre, Native Students Centre and founded the Métis Student Club. She fondly recalls the community she found in the Aboriginal Housing Program, where she also volunteered to help new students find their way.
“Honestly, I didn’t know I’d become a stronger, more compassionate, community-minded young professional,” she says.
Fournie continues to give back, now contributing her expertise to the Aboriginal Strategic Plan Steering Committee at Mount Royal, a complement to her role as Aboriginal and Stakeholder Relations Advisor within the oil and gas industry.
The 2013 valedictorian firmly believes you get to choose the path you take.
“Make every opportunity matter and match your talent and education to add value where you serve,” says Fournie.

SUPPORT YOUR STUDENTFOR PARENTS AND GUARDIANSAs the parent of a prospective Mount Royal student, you likely have many questions. We consider you an important partner in your son or daughter’s education and we want to help you guide them through this exciting process of choosing the right post-secondary institution. Just like you, we want to see our students grow and develop to achieve their full potential and we also want to provide you with the information you need to feel confident about the decision your son or daughter is making.
PROGRAM
Does Mount Royal offer what they want?
It is very important that your student is enrolled in a program they are interested in to help them fully commit to it.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
Do they know what is required to qualify for admission?
Mount Royal visits many high schools and attends career fairs within Alberta, Saskatchewan, British Columbia and across the country to provide information to students directly and we also offer admission information sessions or individual appointments with recruitment officers on campus. Call 403.440.5000 to book.
FINANCIAL SUPPORT
Value for your investment
Last year, Mount Royal students received more than $3 million dollars in scholarships and bursaries. We also offer support to explore other funding options.
SERVICES, FACILITIES AND CAMPUS LIFE
It’s not just about studying
Think about the supports needed in high school, or those that might be required if studying at a higher level. Mount Royal has strong academic and personal supports on campus. Also consider sports teams, clubs, recreation facilities, and other activities available.
KEY DECISION MAKING POINTS:
Parents and guardians can find more information about admission, student services, financial aid and campus tours at mtroyal.ca/Admission/Parents
NOT YOUR AVERAGE PRESIDENT
Policy Studies students have the chance to learn face-to-face from University President David Docherty, PhD, a recognized expert on parliamentary democracy.
43MRU
CLASS SIZE
Mount Royal’s average class size is 30 students. Personal interaction in the classroom is important to us and students can expect to make a connection with other students and our professors right out of the gate.
LOCATION
Move into residence or live at home?
There are pros to both options. Living on campus may enhance the post-secondary experience, but living at home may help save money. Make sure you visit and take a look for yourself. Mount Royal residence is guaranteed for first-year students, provided they apply and pay their deposit by June 15, 2016.
FIT
Is Mount Royal the right fit?
Take a campus tour to see if the campus is a good fit — it might be hard to imagine, but just stepping foot on campus can give them a feel for what it will be like to be a student here.
PROVIDE SUPPORT
Even though it is time for your son or daughter to assume greater responsibility for their future plans, you can still cheer them on from the sidelines and be there to support them when needed.
