Field of View• Portion of specimen viewable at the same

time• As magnification increases -> Field of view

decreases.• Lowest power objective has widest field of

view. That’s why it is used to “scan” the slide.

Resolving Power• Ability to distinguish two points as

separate and distinct instead of smooshing them together.

• Impressionist Art• As magnifying power increases ->

Resolving power increases…to a point

Depth of field• Depth or “zone”, from background to foreground

that is in focus at once

Shallow DOF Deep DOF

Depth of field• In microscopes, as magnifying power

increases -> Depth of Field decreases (gets shallower)
