+, M"#ap3%r metaphor is a comparison etween two unlike thin#s without usin# the word 4like5
or 4as5 to make the comparison. ,he entire poem consists of metaphors where the persona likens himself6herself to
many unwanted thin#s such as 4 the ring from the empty can ’ 5and “ a toothless
stapler ”.
2, Ima/"r'
,he poem descries the unwanted items vividly that one is ale to ima#ine them.

8epetition of a sound* syllale* word* phrase* line or stan9a is a asic unifyin# device
in all poetry. ,he word “ I am ” is repeated at the e#innin# of every stan9a to emphasi9e the
feelin#s of the poet who is tryin# to say he is as hopeless as all the thin#s listed. ,he word 4no one5 is repeated in lines "*& and ) in stan9a four.
4, P"rs%$5.a#$%
0ersonification is when you #ive human characteristics to oects that are not human
and usually the oects are not alive. 7# : “ the carburetor choked itself by bits of dirt ” * “ the toothless stapler ”
6, Ass%a." ssonance is the repetition of vowel sounds in the words that are close to each other.

lliteration occurs when a series of words repeat the same consonants or sounds. 7# : “ that mars instead of mends ” * “ the g um is g one ”
8, S'm2% “ scrapings from an unwashed porridge pan ” is symolic of somethin# left ehind
and utterly useless. “ the !ellotape where you can’t find the end” is symolic of the feelin#s of frustration.
