Dean dandy in road win vs. RailRiders
Nate Rowan | MiLB.com | April 14, 2015
MOOSIC, PA - Pat Dean allowed a single, unearned run in his first Triple-A start since 2013 and the Red Wings bullpen ran its scoreless
streak to 15.2 innings as Rochester beat the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders 3-1 Tuesday night at PNC Field.
Dean (1-0) was not originally in the Wings (4-1) rotation to begin the season but the promotion ofTrevor May on April 11 opened a
spot and Dean seized the opportunity. The left-hander from Boston College surrendered three base hits, all singles, while walking two
and striking out eight. His last Triple-A win came on September 1, 2013 vs. the RailRiders after spending the entirety of last since with
Double-A New Britain. The lone run scored after a dropped fly ball allowed Ben Gamel to reach third base, eventually scoring on a
ground out in the next at-bat of the sixth.
Lester Oliveros fanned three over 1.2 innings, yielding just one infield single, before Logan Darnellrecorded the final out of the
eighth. Michael Tonkinworked a 1-2-3 ninth inning with a strikeout to earn his league-leading third save of the season.
The offense had early opportunities against RailRiders starter Bryan Mitchell but couldn't capitalize. The Wings had four base hits and
a walk through two innings but couldn't break through.Josmil Pinto used a great read from second base in the third after Brock
Peterson struck out swinging with two outs but the ball in the dirt kicked away from catcher Eddy Rodriguez, who fired to first base
late while Pinto never stopped running to cross the plate for the game's first run.
Mitchell tossed 87 pitches over 3.2 innings with seven strikeouts before being relieved.
Rochester would add to its lead in the sixth as James Beresford reached on an infield single to short. He would advance to second base
on a wild pitch. That set up a strange sequence as Eric Farris stepped into the box. With one out and a 1-2 count, Farris swung through
a pitch with what was believed to be strike three. RailRiders manager Dave Miley came out to argue and eventually the umpires called
the press box to consult the official scorer, who correctly confirmed it was indeed strike three, much to the displeasure of Red Wings
manager Mike Quade. The whole ordeal took several minutes and while it may never be known what type of impact it had on
Scranton/WB pitcher Jacob Lindgren, the next batter Argenis Diaz chopped an RBI double to left field followed by anAaron Hicks triple
to center to give Rochester a 3-0 lead.
Hicks would record his third outfield assist of the season in the game, tops in the International League.
Eddie Rosario, Beresford and Farris each tallied two hits and Diaz stole two bases for the Wings, who improved to 4-1.
Next up: RHP Alex Meyer starts for the Wings against RailRiders RHP Jaron Long when the teams meet for "breakfast and baseball"
Wednesday at 10:35 a.m. in Moosic, PA.
Next Home Game: Fri. April 24 vs. Syracuse (Nationals) at 7:05 p.m.

Yankees drop Miracle, 3-1, in morning game in Tampa
Fort Myers Miracle | MiLB.com | April 14, 2015
TAMPA, Fla. (April 14, 2015) - The Tampa Yankees held off the Fort Myers Miracle, 3-1, at Steinbrenner Field on Tuesday morning.
The Yankees grabbed an early lead in the second inning. With one out, Danny Oh hit a ground ball that deflected off of Michael
Quesada. Angelo Gumbs then singled into left field off Miracle starter Luke Westphal to put runners on the corners. Oh moved to third
on a wild pitch by Westphal (0-1). Then, Ericson Leonora tomahawked a breaking ball into left field to drive in Oh, 1-0.
Two more runs crossed for Tampa in the fourth. After Westphal back-to-back one out singles to Mike Ford and Oh, Tim Shibuya was
called on from the Miracle bullpen. Gumbs greeted Shibuya with a run-scoring single into left. Leonora followed with a base hit
through the left side and plated Oh to give the Yankees a 3-0 advantage.
The Miracle scratched across a run in the fifth. Niko Goodrum led off with his fifth double of the season into right center off Yankees
reliever Chad Taylor. After Aderling Mejia and Mitch Garver each struck out, Alex Swim delivered a two-out, RBI single through the
middle to plate Goodrum and cut the Yankees lead to two runs.
Through six innings, the Miracle stranded 10 runners. With two outs in the sixth, the Yankees called in right-hander Angel Rincon.
Recording the final out of the sixth, Rincon would face the minimum through the final 10 outs to record the save.
Andrew Bailey pitched a scoreless fourth inning in relief of Melvin Morla to earn the win. Bailey (1-0) allowed a hit and struck out one.
Westphal (0-1) went 3.1 innings for the Miracle in a losing effort. Two of the three runs charged to Westphal were earned and he
finished with five strikeouts. Shibuya went 2.2 innings without giving up a run, but two inherited runners scored. Brandon Peterson
pitched the final two frames out of the bullpen cleanly.

Kernels record home sweep; improve to 6-0
Jared Shlensky | MiLB.com | April 14, 2015
CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA - Cedar Rapids recorded its sixth straight win and first home sweep this season with Tuesday's 8-4 win over the
Beloit Snappers. The team remains undefeated and begin a three-game series v. Peoria on Wednesday evening.
Jared Wilson (1-0) earned the win for Cedar Rapids, the fifth different starting pitcher to record a win this year for the Kernels. The
right-hander yielded just two runs on six hits and one walk while striking out three in five innings pitched.
Daniel Gossett (0-1) suffered the loss for Beloit in his Midwest League debut. The 22-year-old right-hander allowed six runs (four
earned) on four hits and two walks while striking out two.
15
Cedar Rapids (6-0) got out to an early 1-0 lead courtesy of a two-out, solo home run to left-center from Trey Vavra. Vavra's solo homer
was the third Cedar Rapids home run of the season, and more importantly, gave the Kernels the opening lead for the sixth straight
game.
The Kernels tacked on four more in the bottom of the second, three of which came with two outs in the frame. Kuresa got the inning
started with a one-out single to center field. T.J. White followed with a walk, moving Kuresa to second. A Pat Kelly fielder's choice
advanced Kuresa to third, giving Cedar Rapids runners on the corners with two outs. Tanner English drove in the Kernels first run of the
inning with an RBI single, bringing in Kuresa from third. Zack Granite then drew a five-pitch walk, loading the bases for Cedar Rapids.
Nick Gordon continued the inning with a two-run single, scoring Kelly and English. Cedar Rapids got their final run of the inning on a
Snappers fielding error, allowing Granite to come around from second.
Beloit (1-5) cut the Cedar Rapids lead to four with a run in the top of third. Trent Gilbert led off the inning with a double into the left-
center gap and came around to score on a Melvin Mercedes RBI single, making it a 5-1 game.
The Snappers added another run in the top of the fifth, reducing the Kernels' lead to 5-2. Mercedes started the inning with a one-out
single to left. Two batters later, Joe Bennie brought in Mercedes on a two-out, RBI triple into right field, scoring Mercedes.
Granite reached second on a Snappers throwing error to start the home half of the fifth for the Kernels. Gordon then hit into a fielder's
choice, resulting in Granite being thrown out at third in a rundown. However, during the rundown, Gordon was able to move into
second base. A fielding error by the Snappers brought in Gordon from second, giving Cedar Rapids a 6-2 lead.
Beloit trimmed the Kernels' lead to two with a two-run top of the seventh. Gilbert and Jose Chavez started the top half with back-to-
back singles. Two batters later, Munoz singled to center, loading the bases for Beloit. A Randy LeBlanc wild pitch allowed Gilbert to
score from third, trimming the Cedar Rapids lead to 6-3. Beloit followed with back-to-back walks in the inning, scoring Chavez.
Cedar Rapids countered with two runs in the bottom of the seventh, increasing their lead to 8-4. Tanner English and Granite led off the
inning with back-to-back singles. A Nick Gordon sacrifice bunt advanced both runners 90 feet, giving the Kernels runners on second
and third with one out in the frame. Max Murphy then drew a two-out walk, loading the bases for Cedar Rapids. JJ Fernandez followed
Murphy with a two-out, two-run single to left field, scoring English and Granite.
LeBlanc allowed two runs in 1 2/3 innings pitched on three hits and two walks while striking out four in his second appearance this
season.
C.K. Irby recorded his first hold this season for Cedar Rapids. Irby issued three walks and struck out two in 1 1/3 scoreless innings in
relief.
Cam Booser closed out the ball game with a scoreless ninth inning. The southpaw allowed just one hit and added a strikeout in his lone
inning of work.
The Kernels look for their seventh straight win on Wednesday evening vs. the Peoria Chiefs. First pitch is at 6:35 p.m. from Perfect
Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium. LHP Matt Batts (1-0, 1.59) gets the start for Cedar Rapids while RHP Luis Perdomo (0-0,
0.00) gets the ball for Peoria.
The Kernels fourth straight home game of the season is on Wednesday evening at 6:35 p.m. v. Peoria. Wednesday's series opener v.
the Chiefs is a Free Money Wednesday presented by Western Fraternal Life. Western Fraternal Life will give away $500 at the main
gates at every Wednesday home game with $100 as the top cash prize.
