METRO MANILA SEARCH FOR CLIMATE AND DISASTER-RESILIENT
COMMUNITIES AWARDING CEREMONY
Last November 23, 2018 the Department of Environment and Natural Resources through
the Environmental Management Bureau conducted a community mobilization activity entitled:
“Sama-sama sa K5: Kilos sa Klima at Kalamidad tungo sa Kaligtasan at Kaunlaran. It is an
awarding ceremony for the Climate and Disaster-Resilient Communities within the National Capi-
tal Region conducted at the Great Eastern Hotel, Quezon Avenue, Quezon City.
The Department of Environment and Natural Resources has tied up with the Department of
the Interior and Local Government to educate and empower communities to take action on climate
change. This seeks to identify the best climate and disaster resilient communities within the Na-
tional Capital Region. The need to recognize this communities is to empower them to be more
adaptive and resilient to the devastating effects of climate change and to be more aware on various
environmental issues.
Among the criteria for judging are innovativeness, impact, level of people participation, lev-
el of initiative, and sustainability. Cash prizes given are as follows: PHP50,000 for the first place;
PHP40,000 for the second; and PHP30,000 for the third. Also, consolation prizes with the amount
of PHP10,000 were given to seven communities. Barangay 31 Southside Makati City bagged the
1st place, Barangay San Isidro Paranaque City won the 2nd place, and Barangay San Jose Pasig
City won the 3rd place.
It is important to keep in mind that it is not the Government’s responsibility alone to protect
the communities with the negative impacts of the changing climatic conditions. Moreover, commu-
nity response to mitigate and adapt to this rising situation is a great help to alleviate their condi-
tions and minimize the burden they are experiencing.
