MDAS
Meter Data Acquisition System (MDAS) :
• A common Meter Data Acquisition System is deployed to read all makes of meters.
• MDA system acquires meter raw data stored in the Modem memory.
• Raw files received from different types of meters are processed through the respective API utility tools and converted into XML file.
• Also, health status of all the installed modems, communication logs and events are captured in MDAS.
…Message Box ( Arial, Font size 18 Bold)
MDMS Meter Data Management System (MDMS) :
• MDM is the central repository for meter data and maintains interval data, event logs , register data & outage history for all the connected meters.
• The MDM system has a facility to upload meter data read through
CMRI. This facility is used to manage the data of meters not covered under AMR.
• MDM validates meter data as per predefined validation rules to ensure that only correct data is sent for billing.
• The MDM system provides many useful MIS reports

Middleware
Middleware :
• The SAP PI middleware is used for integrating MDAS, MDM and SAP billing system for seamless exchange of data.
• The SAP PI system maps the meter CDF file with MDM system.
• New meter creation or deletion is done in SAP system which is communicated to the MDM through the middleware.

Communication -Last mile connectivity & related issues
• Selection of communication technology < Speed < Reliability < Data Security < Cost ( Capex + Opex ) GPRS was selected as the best option on the above parameters for high
value commercial and industrial consumers.
• Meter protocols Intelligent Modems are deployed which collect meter data using API API are provided by Meter suppliers as per MIOS. Modems collect data from meter at 30 minute interval & stores the same in
its memory. The data is pushed every midnight to MDAS.

Last mile connectivity and related issues in AMR
• Integration with Billing system
< Billing data is collected in MDM.
< MDM does data validation
< SAP-PI Middleware is used for pushing data from MDM to SAP
• Sharing meter data with customers
< Customer logs on to TPC Customer Web Portal through internet.
< Customer portal pulls meter data from MDMS

Last mile connectivity in AMR
• The capital & operational cost per meter is relatively high for GPRS. Hence, GPRS is not viable for low end consumers. It is necessary to explore
technological option suitable for deployment of AMR for low end consumers. • In many Residential / Commercial complexes, large number of meters are installed in
close vicinity and form a cluster.
• RS-485 Modbus seems attractive and viable option for covering cluster meters under AMR.TPC has installed one pilot based on RS-485 technology and the performance is under observation.
• Physical looping of meter communication ports is cumbersome and tamper prone. RF Mesh seems to be an option. TPC is planning to set up a pilot based on RF Mesh technology for cluster metering installations.
• For Residential consumers, PLC may be a viable option. TPC is planning to set up a pilot project to explore this option.

Pilot project on RS-485
• Around 40 number three phase WC meters installed in a commercial
complex are covered under pilot.
• All meters are L & T make with inbuilt RS-485 port
• The RS-485 terminals of all meters are connected in a daisy chain and are
looped to a data concentrator.
• The data concentrator collects meter data once every fifteen minutes and
stores the same in its memory.
• The data concentrator has inbuilt GPRS Modem which pushes meter data
to Head end system at scheduled interval( Once a day)
