Ahead of major construction for the Metro Tunnel Project, changes to the road, tram and bicycle networks are required to keep Melbourne moving during construction.
Further to the works notification issued 31 October 2017 this work will now commence on 3 January 2018.
As the major arterial route in the precinct, Kings Way has been identified as the primary diversion route during construction of the new underground station at Domain. To ensure Kings Way can cater for the predicted increase in traffic, it is essential that changes are made to the road to improve the efficiency of the network.
These changes are part of a number of network improvement projects being delivered in conjunction with existing VicRoads initiatives to accommodate diverted traffic during construction. These works will improve the resilience and capacity of the road network while the Metro Tunnel is built. Road network improvements across the city include lane changes and signalling upgrades at more than 100 intersections. Variable message signs (VMS) will also be installed to provide drivers with information on traffic conditions on key routes.
John Holland has been appointed as the Managing Contractor for the delivery of these works.
What we are doingA number of intersections along Kings Way will be upgraded to improve the traffic flow, efficiency and the safety of the network for vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians.
Intersection of Kings Way & Park Street (map 1) - January to late February 2018Changes will be made to the intersection of Kings Way and Park Street to increase the capacity and efficiency of Kings Way. Works include:
• Undertaking service investigation works to confirm service location and depth within this area
• Modifying the service road kerb, to become a left turn only lane
• Line marking works
• Installing an overhead traffic sign across Kings Way north-west of Cobden Street to support the changed traffic conditions
• Constructing a crossover (exit point for vehicle traffic) on Kings Way north-west of Cobden Street from the service lane into the slow lane in the carriageway on Kings Way.
WhenService investigation works• 6pm – 7am, on up to five consecutive nights
between Wednesday 3 January and Friday 12 January 2018.
Kings Way Service lane near Cobden Street intersection• 6pm – 7am, on up to 10 nights with a maximum of
five consecutive nights during this period between Wednesday 3 January and 19 January 2018.
