MASS INTENTIONS
No Saturday Morning Mass: Given the Christmas
schedule, there is no Saturday morning Mass this
Saturday, Dec 26th or next Saturday, Jan 2nd.
Come and Practice the Works of Mercy: Join Father
Matera and the residents of Governor’s
House December 30th for Mass at 2:00 PM. All
Parishioners are invited to attend, but a special
invitation is extended to our fourth grade religious
education classes who are making prayer beads and
stationary for the residents as part of their service
project. By visiting these residents you show them that
they are not forgotten and you practice the Corporal
and Spiritual Works of Mercy of visiting the sick and
the homebound. After the Mass at 2:00 PM, the
children will be caroling through the halls as they give
out gifts from the parish. If you have questions, contact
Sandy Everett at (860) 214-6557 by either text or call.
Governor’s House is located at 36 Firetown Road. We
will be meeting on the stairs at 1:45 PM.!
Seating for People with Special Needs: We have
moved one of the pews from the north wing of the
church (by the choir) to the south wing of the church
(on the rectory side of the church). This has allowed us
to make the first two pews of the south wing more
accessible to people with special needs. If you have
special needs, we invite you to sit in the first or second
pew in the south wing.
Mercy Shelter: Desserts and fruit are needed to take to
Mercy Shelter in Hartford this Sunday, December 27th.
All items can be dropped off in the Lower Church
before 3:00 PM. Thanks for all the donations!
Prayer Shawl Ministry: Join us on Monday, January 4
at 7:00 PM in the Lower Church. Beginners to experts
welcome. We are able to supply yarn if you would like
to make a shawl for the ministry. For information, call
Cheryl (860) 651-9525 or Rhoda (860) 651-4027.

Christmas 2015
The Word Was Made Flesh
On behalf of Deacon Art and myself, I wish all of you a most holy and blessed Christmas. May the
Spirit of joy and peace that comes with the birth of the Savior fill your lives this Christmas season and the
entire year.
The mystery of Christmas is the mystery of the Incarnation: the mystery of the Word made Flesh.
Saint John proclaims this mystery when he writes at the beginning of his Gospel: “In the beginning was
the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God … And the Word became flesh and made
his dwelling among us, and we saw his glory as of the Father’s only Son, full of grace and truth” (John
1:1, 14).
The eternal Word of God entered the world in which we live by taking on our human flesh. This
means that Jesus Christ is true God and true Man. Jesus of Nazareth was a human being like us in every
way but sin. He experienced our emotion and pain; he experienced our suffering and disappointment; he
shared fully in our human nature. But Jesus was not only human; he was the incarnate Son of God. To see
Jesus, therefore, is to see God. To hear Jesus is to hear God. To be in Jesus’ presence is to be in the pres-
ence of God.
The mystery of the Incarnation is so profound that we can never fully comprehend or understand
it. This is why we celebrate Christmas over a period of several weeks rather than on a single day. It takes
time to absorb the mystery of Christmas. It takes time to grasp the enormity of God’s gift to us. It takes
time to reflect upon and enter into the mystery of Christmas.
For us who believe in the mystery of Christmas—the Incarnation—there is no room for doubt and
despair. There is no room for pessimism. The world in which we live, God’s good creation, has been sanc-
tified and made holy by the appearance of God’s Son in the flesh.
Merry Christmas Father Matera
