MARZO 2018
MESSAGGIO DALLA PRESIDENTESSA
Cari amici,
IHL will install its new slate of officers at a ceremony and catered dinner – by Ciao Osteria – on Saturday,
March 10th
beginning at 4:00 p.m. This yearly event will take place at the St. Leo Knights of Columbus Hall
and will be co-hosted with the George Washington Lodge. Again this year, Grand Lodge of Virginia
President Robert Amante will preside over the ceremonies to install the new officers. Bob and his wife,
Beverly, graciously accepted our invitation to attend. The dinner reservation deadline is Sunday, March 4th
as we would like to turn in our numbers to Ciao at that time. Call or email your reservation in to Eleanor
Lillo at 703-354-2454/[email protected]. I invite and encourage all members to attend the installation to
personally thank our officers for their time and efforts this past year for the good of the lodge. All
information is located on two flyers at the end of the Newsletter, but please call or email if you have any
questions.
Our annual fundraiser, Casino Night, was another fantastic success as we gathered together again at the
Knights of Columbus Hall to try our luck at stud poker, black jack, Beat the Dealer and more. The brand
new game boards, crafted and created by Mac Farrell (a.k.a. Santa’s Elf) were a success! Your admission
costs to play will be contributed 100% to our three charities, Alzheimer’s, Autism and Cooley’s Anemia,
while prizes players received were donated by local restaurants, services, stores and businesses. Many thanks
to all who worked hard visiting our supporters and collecting gift cards, gift certificates and other goodies.
These local services, businesses and restaurants are extremely generous to IHL and are listed at the end of
the Newsletter to patronize and thank whenever you have the opportunity. We are blessed to have many
long-standing sponsors and benefactors and it is always helpful to find new friends who will help with this
fundraiser which benefits our charities. A thank you letter is provided at the end of this Newsletter for
sponsors who donated prizes for the evening. I especially would like to thank Eleanor Lillo for doing a great
job coordinating the prize list and presentation, and to our dealers Roy, John, Dennis & Fred!
I will be attending a planning meeting on Saturday for this year’s Festa della Repubblica, tentatively
scheduled for Saturday evening, June 9th
. I will keep you all informed as the plans go forward to celebrate
the Italian national holiday commemorating the institutional referendum of 1946 when Italy became a
Republic.
Sono felice di dare il benvenuto al nostro nuovo socio Jeff Affuso. Spero che avremo tutti la possibilità di
incontrarlo presto! Welcome to our newest member, Jeff Affuso. According to reliable sources, I
understand that Jeff is a great cook and his Feast of the Seven Fishes is the best meal ever AND he knows
his way around a bocce court from playing in a NY league before moving to Virginia.
Con affetto!

Walter Reed Holds Special Place in World War II Veteran’s Heart
By Ricardo J. Reyes WRNMMC Command Communications Feb 22, 2018
Navy Chief Petty Officer Anthony Musco, a retired World War II, Korean and Vietnam veteran recently
began experiencing shortness of breath and a lack of energy.
These are two “typical symptoms of severe aortic valve stenosis,” according to Navy Cmdr. (Dr.) Robert
Gallagher, interventional cardiologist at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and one of
Musco’s physicians.
Aortic stenosis is a narrowing of the aortic valve opening, “a condition that is uniformly fatal without
treatment,” explained Gallagher.
“Because of his age of 92 and his other medical history, he would have been a very high-risk candidate for
open heart surgery,” said Navy Capt. (Dr.) Jared Antevil, chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery at WRNMMC
and another of Musco’s physicians. “But because of our trans-catheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR)
program, we were able to offer him treatment,” Antevil added.
TAVR involves replacing one’s aortic valve by inserting a catheter through their femoral artery, located
near the groin, explained Antevil.
“[Musco’s] story highlights the tremendous strides we’ve made in the field of heart surgery,” Antevil said.
“He had open heart surgery almost 50 years ago, and now he’s had a more advanced, less invasive
procedure in the same hospital.”
Going Back in Time
In 1972, Musco, an aviation radioman while in uniform, learned that he
needed an emergency coronary artery bypass surgery after a routine
physical. The surgery helps people whose coronary arteries have become
narrowed or blocked by fatty material called plaque. The bypass allows
more blood and oxygen to flow to the heart muscle.
Walter Reed National Military Medical Center patient, Navy Chief Petty Officer
Anthony Musco, a retired World War II, Korean and Vietnam veteran, recently
underwent the innovative trans-catheter aortic valve replacement procedure
at WRNMMC, nearly 50 years after receiving an emergency coronary artery
bypass surgery. Not only did Musco recover well from that surgery, “but all
of his bypass grafts are also still open today, the mark of a great surgeon and
a great patient,” said Navy Capt. (Dr.) Jared Antevil, chief of Cardiothoracic
Surgery at WRNMMC.

MARCH BIRTHDAYS
LODGE ANNOUNCEMENTS MARCH LUNCH BUNCH The Lunch Bunch will meet up on Wednesday, March 7th at noon at Delia’s Pizzeria and Grille, 6515 Backlick Road, Springfield, VA. Delia’s serves excellent Greek cuisine and is one of our long-time supporters of the Casino Night event. Please come and join your fellow IHL members for lunch to show our appreciation for their support. Call Dennis at 703-354-2454 or email him at [email protected] if you plan to attend. The Italian Language Group returned this past Saturday and was graciously hosted by members Peter and Kathleen Ognibene. The group was composed of those who have previously taken formal Italian language classes or otherwise have acquired the fundamentals of the Italian language. The evening began with some catching up as well as getting to know new group members. After a delicious dinner, Peter immersed us in reading and discussing several poems by Giacomo Leopardi (All’Italia, Il Passero Solitario e L’nfinito). All had the opportunity to read in Italian which always brings us closer to our Italian culture. If you are looking for a social evening filled with Italian language, discussions about Italian culture, travel and traditions, please join us! Members and non-members are welcome to meet up with us on the fourth Saturday evening of each month. The next meet-up is Saturday, March 24th. Look for more details coming up.

Ciao!
On behalf of the Officers and members of the Italian Heritage Lodge #2517 Order Sons and Daughters of
Italy in America, we want to thank you for your support of our recent fundraising event for charity.
Our annual “Casino Night” fundraising event, held on February 10, 2018, was a huge success and your
generous Gift Certificate was a popular one among our members and guests which helped this to be a
major financially rewarding charitable venture.
Our targeted charities for this year were Alzheimer’s disease, Cooley’s Anemia, Autism and Local
Scholarships. It will be rewarding for you to know that 100% of all monies collected will go directly to
these charities.
Support from our sponsors is the major reason for our organization’s financial ability to give generously
to these charities and our members have been asked to patronize our sponsors, both verbally and in our
published Newsletter “La Bandiera.”
Again, we thank you sincerely for your generosity,
Nicolette Sciscilo John F. Asiello Jr.
