Need outdoor gear? No problemIf you crave to get out on your own
adventure, don’t let lack of cash for out-door equipment keep you at home.
Even if you don’t own a mountain bike, canoe, kayak or backpacking or sports gear, you can rent top-quality equipment at either the Northwest Ad-venture Center at Lewis North or Ad-ventures Unlimited at McChord Field.
Choose from a huge array of rentals for a day to a week while you enjoy your days off in the great outdoors.
When you’re ready to buy your own gear, stop by the Northwest Adventure Center’s sales store first. You can’t beat the huge inventory at deep discounts for getting what you want.
Golfers can show your stuffEven though wind and rain storms
made golfing a bit difficult on Whisper-ing Firs’ and Eagles Prides’ greens at the height of winter, both golf courses are primed for a milder season.
With the first signs of spring come opportunities for more play and compe-titions. Check out page 10 to learn all about Whispering Firs’ Customer Ap-preciation Week and the 7th Annual Spring Break competition.
It’s also prime time to sharpen your game and edge out the competition with individual lessons from a golf pro at either Whispering Firs or Eagles Pride.

Family Child CareIt’s a perfect career choice for military spouses!
Become a Family Child Care provider and earn money while caring for JBLM chil-dren—and your own—in on-base housing. FCC provides free training as well as free childcare while you become a certified provider. Training and experience gained through the FCC program is transferable to working in a child development center.
Additionally, FCC has initiated an amnesty program in order to decrease the risk of child abuse and neglect in unauthorized care. It allows individuals who aren’t certified FCC providers (but are regularly caring for children in privatized housing) an opportunity to register with CYS Services without penalty. If you’re currently providing unauthorized childcare in your home, call the FCC Program for details on how you can become certified, or pick up an application in Building 2013B (Pendleton & 3rd Ave.) at Lewis Main.
The next orientation is March 8, 6–8 p.m. with provisional classes following. For additional information, call 253-967-3039.

Feelin’ good
by Thomas Ward, facility manager, McChord Fitness Center & Annex
Everyone extols the virtues of exercise, but many leave out the importance of nutrition. Maintaining a proper diet can be difficult even when you know what
to eat, as nutritional labels aren’t all that easy to follow. It’s well-known that most companies who market food products are out to make
money rather than invest in consumer welfare. Government agencies have a vested interest in keeping these corporations in check; however, legal loopholes still exist. The four government agencies all have different roles to play—the Federal Trade Commission regulates what advertisers say in the media; the Food and Drug Ad-ministration regulates what is printed on food labels (with the exception of meat and poultry); the United States Department of Agriculture regulates what is printed on the labels of meat and poultry; and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives regulates the print on alcoholic beverages.
There are established definitions for some words used in advertising, but not all. Aside from these, consumers must educate themselves on how to read nutritional labels. Here are a few tips for reading those labels:•Nutritionservingsizeandservingspercontainerareamongthefirstthingsto
look for. Companies may reduce the size of the serving on the label to reduce the calories reported their product.
•Alsolookfortheamountsoftotalandunsaturatedfats.Saturatedfatsarechemi-cally unable to bind to any other molecule, which makes them hard to break down, but even harder to pull off artery walls.
• Eventhoughaproductmaybelowincalories, asimplecalculationsometimesshows that up to 50 percent of a product’s calorie content comes from fat!
•Mostnutritionallabelsarebasedona2,000-caloriediet;however,noteveryoneison such a diet. The best way to figure out your caloric intake needs is to calculate how many calories you expend over the course of a day. Once you’ve determined your daily caloric needs, a comprehensive diet plan can begin.
For example, if you want to lose weight, you ideally should exercise to expend 300–500 calories per day (seven days per week) and decrease your nutritional intake by 300–500 calories per day. Approximately 7,000 calories are needed to be expended in order to lose 1.5–2 lbs. per week. A registered dietician can help if you have questions. Here’s what other information on nutritional labels really means:
• Low-calorie, reduced calorie, dietetic:Containsnomore than 40 calories in asingle serving or one-third fewer calories than the regular product.
• Lightor“lite”:Currentlytherearenolawsgoverningtheuseofthisword.Theproduct can be legally light in weight or light in color.
• Imitation:Theproducthasbeenchangedfromtheoriginalrecipe;itisasubsti-tute for and resembles another food, but is nutritionally inferior (according to regulations) than the food it replaces.
• Sodium-free:Servingscontainlessthan5mgofsodium.• Low-sodium:Servingshavenomorethan140mgofsodium.•Very-lowsodium:Servingshavenomorethan35mgofsodium.• Reducedsodium:Sodiumisreducedby25percentcomparedtotheproduct it
replaces (the original sodium content may well be many times the recom-mended daily amount).
• Fortified or enriched: Vitamins andminerals are added because they were either missing initially or destroyed in the preparation of the product.
•Nocholesterol:Thereisn’tanycholes-terol in the product.
•Cholesterol-free: Less than 2 mg ofcholesterol per serving.
• Low-fat:Foodthatcontainslessthan3g total fat for the referenced serving size.
• Fat-free:Haslessthan0.5gramoffatper serving.

•Noartificialcoloring:Noneofthe33allowable coloring agents are used.
•Wheat:Wheat ispartof theproductbut not necessarily whole wheat. You don’t need to be confused about
whether you’re eating the best foods along with exercising. Many ques-tions can be answered by visiting mypyramid.gov or by talking with a reg-istered dietician. Once your diet plan has taken hold, visit one of your Family and MWR fitness centers to round out your overall fitness plan.

Learning & earning
By Ryki Carlson, JBLM Financial Counselor
B ecoming a millionaire is easier
today than ever before.
The main strategy is persistence in
savings. Saving just $100 per month
every month from age 20 through 65
could make you millionaire, provided
you invest that money in a well-man-
aged mutual fund averaging 10 percent
per year.
Believing it’s possible is the first step
for this financial goal. Now evaluate
how to fund this goal.
Making small changes in your budget
and tracking your spending can make a big difference. Consider reducing un-
necessary expenses such as eating out, movies or impulse purchases.
The object is to reduce expenses by approximately $23 per week to fund your goal. Evaluate your needs versus wants to find the money to become the millionaire you dream about.
The final step is to set up the recur-ring allotment or automatic transfer to fund your account. Consider putting the money into the Thrift Savings Plan (tsp.gov).
This plan is tax-deferred, which means you don’t pay income tax on your investment until you start to make withdrawals. The contributions are put into the TSP before tax, meaning the
money is deducted from your pay before any tax is withheld.
So, contributing to the TSP reduces the amount of your taxable pay. Addi-tionally, since your paycheck is reduced by less than your actual contribution, it may be easier to reach your goal than you think.
To learn more about how to become a millionaire, check into the following classes with Financial Readiness: “The TSP and Other Retirement Savings Ac-counts,” “Savings and Investing” and “Investing for Retirement.”
These classes and more are listed on the Family and MWR web calendar at JBLMmwr.com.
