January PDM Review
Michael Trumpy
January’s joint meeting on the 14th between APICS and ISM featured Dr. Bernard Weinstein
from the Maguire Energy Institute and SMU’s Cox School of Business. His topic of discussion
was “The New Economics of Oil and Gas: Implications for Texas and the U.S.”
The evening started with an hour of networking with members from both ISM and APICS. This
was a great opportunity to meet and converse with fellow manufacturing, supply chain, and
purchasing professionals.
It was then time for dinner and the presentation from Dr. Weinstein. Before dinner APICS
representatives presented the CSCP pin to the recent recipients from CH Robinson. The
group from CH Robinson had the highest passing rate in recent history. Congratulations to all
of them for their dedication and hard work.
Dr. Bernard Weinstein then gave an insightful presentation on how the drop in oil prices is
affecting our economy. It was definitely a much different presentation than last year when the
oil industry was in much better shape.

North Texas APICS Chapter tour of International Grains
and Cereal
The North Texas chapter of APICS invites you to a plant tour of the manufacturing facility at
the International Grains and Cereal plant in Greenville Texas on March 3rd, 2016.
Host: International Grains and Cereal, a division of Empresas Polar
Location: 6902 Texas Highway 66, Greenville, Texas 75402
Date: March 3rd, 2016
Time: 6:00pm
Product Area: Food service products, Corn meal product P.A.N. The term P.A.N. is also
Spanish for bread.
Point of Contact: John Hamil, IGC at 903.554.1008 or email [email protected]
Background: The International Grains and Cereal (IGC) plant at Greenville was established
on September 30, 2013. Their facility is the former LANCE snack products plant established
approximately the mid-1960s. The 500,000ft facility is located on 37 acres in the Greenville
industrial park area. The plant converts white and yellow corn kernels (corn already
separated from the corn husk) into one of 21 yellow and white corn meal products that are
shipped all over the world. IGC produces millions of lbs of corn meal products annually, all
based on customer requirements. Approximately 40% of their production are sold in the
United States.
The basic product made at the IGC plant, P.A.N. was started in Venezuela in 1950 to produce
corn flakes for beer production. As corn became a staple product in the local diet a new
product was born. By the end of the 1960s there were 3 plants making corn meal in
Venezuela. During the 1970s there was a significant growth in consumption of corn to 40.7
kilograms per person per year. In the 1990s P.A.N. flour was exported from Venezuela to the
rest of the world. In the2000s there have been several changes in packaging and launching
of more products, including an P.A.N. sweet corn mix. By 2014 P.A.N. products are being
shipped to more than 25 countries
Manufacturing: The technology at the IGC plant is state of the art, but the machines require
talented operators and technicians to manufacture the best products in an optimum
environment.
The tour will include an overview of the company and their products, and a walking tour of the
raw material receiving through manufacturing and finished products areas.
Come see how white and yellow corn meal is made and get samples of their product.
