Canoes glided on the water thousands of years agoGogama is situated on one of many ancient native canoe routes in Northern Ontario’s Boreal forest. Gogama name means ‘jumping fish’ in the Ojib-way language. First Nation people have lived here in a continuum spanning thou-sands of years. Today, they have a thriving community on the Mattagami Reserve and welcome visitors to come and learn about their culture.
The LandscapeThe Gogama area lies within forest that sits on the rugged undulating Canadian Shield rock. Geological fault lines have split the rock. These faults are aligned in a Northwest – Southeast direction. The rivers and lakes follow these faults, in some cases precisely. On Hwy. 144 you will see rock cuts that expose the type or rocks located here.
A short distance north of the juncture of Hwy. 144 and Hwy. 560, (south of Gogama), is a rest station located at the Height of Land. At this point, water drains to Hudson Bay on the north side and on the south to rivers and lakes draining into the Atlantic ocean.
Jack pine, spruce, birch, poplar and balsam are the main species of trees that make up the forest in the area.
Hudson’s Bay CompanyFur trading, an integral part of our northern cultural heritage, played a strategic role in this area. Originally, a trading post was estab-lished at the present Matta-gami First Nation Reserve in 1794 by the North-West Company. Then, in 1820 it became a Hudson’s Bay Company post. At this same location, the Depart-ment of Lands and Forests sent a few Ranger students to build a cabin in 1904. In 1922, the ‘store’ was opened in Gogama and is now the home of the museum. It is a wonderful work in progress as Gogama has the only town with two original HBC stores.
Hunting and FishingNumerous canoe excur-sions are possible on the surrounding lake and river systems. Motels, lodges resorts and camping sites provide your starting points to these trips. Fishing and hunting in the spring and fall see many returning to visit their favourite area.
Gogama is fortunate to have the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources offices in town. Staff are pleased to advise on hunting and fish-ing regulations, hiking and forestry management.

During the fishing season (May 15 to September 27) you will pull in Walleye, Pike, Smallmouth Bass, Rainbow & Speckled Trout, Lake Trout and Whitefish from surrounding lakes. Local lodges provide all the expected services including great food, boats and mo-tors and for the demand-ing fisher, fly-in to remote camps.
SnowmobilingThe Gogama Snowmo-bile Club maintains local snowmobile trails. The vast network of Ontario trails ensures safe travel. Consult the OFSC’s trail maps and Website (www.ofsc.on.ca)
Hiking & WalkaboutsThe Bald Rock Scenic Lookout is a great hike if you want to get a ‘feel’ for the area. The trail was built by an all girl team of Ontario Rangers as part of their 50th anniversary celebration in July 1994.
When you visit, don’t hesi-tate to ask about places to walk or hike.
Take a healthy stroll through town and down to the lakeshore park and stand on the site of the old Poupore sawmill.

Location (www.gogama.ca)Highway 144 takes you to Gogama from Sudbury in the south or Timmins in the north. In the east from the Ontario & Quebec boundary, Highway 560 provides an exception-ally beautiful route to 144 and then to Gogama.
If you are not traveling by car, there is a daily bus service and passenger trains pass through three days a week.
Cell phone service is available in town and on Hwy 144.
The Height of Land (see map) marks the beginning of the Arctic watershed. As you cross the boundary heading north, all rivers drain to James Bay and Hudson Bay.
Furs were traded at Mattagami post and canoes carried the packs to York Factory on James Bay. South of Gogama, they were taken down rivers that flowed to Lake Nipissing or Lake Temiskaming / Ottawa River and then onto Montreal.
