Market Review
DEBT MARKET REVIEW
Tight liquidity condition persisted during the month of February 2011 with inflation being the major area of concern for the Reserve Bank of India. The wholesale price index, the most widely watched gauge of prices in India, came down to 8.23 percent in January 2011, from a year earlier, compared with 8.43 percent in December 2010. It was mainly on account of drop in food prices with the fresh arrival of agricultural products. RBI continues to maintain a hawkish stance on inflation and monitor the liquidity and interest rate movements, very closely.
Sovereign Bonds witnessed a sharp rally and markets cheered the following announcements by the Finance Minister in the Union Budget for F.Y. 2011/12, presented on 28th February 2011.
l Lower than expected net borrowing of Rs.3.43 lakh crores and Gross Borrowing of Rs.4.17 lakh crore, as against Rs.4.27 lakh crore in the last fiscal.
l Tighter Fiscal Deficit Target at 4.6% of GDP for next fiscal, against market expectation of 4.80%.
l Increase in FII investment limit in Debt to $40 billion.
The 10 year benchmark bond (7.80% GS 2020) yield touched 7.98% on 28th February. On the CDs front PSU Banks issued 3 month and 6 month CDs in the range of 9.95% - 10.10%. PSU banks and Private banks issued 1 year CDs in the range of 10% - 10.30%.
The 5-year & 10-year AAA Corporate Bond yield ended at 9.20% & 9.14%, respectively, as on 28th February 2011.
Outlook:
Inflation would remain the primary concern of the Reserve Bank of India in the coming months with the spurt in Crude Oil Prices, subsequent to the unrest in the Mid-East Region. With the expected advance tax outflows in the 2nd Fortnight of March, tight liquidity conditions are expected to continue till March 2011. However, if the Crude oil prices ease, interest rates may cool down from April 2011,as it appears that interest rates are at peak levels or are nearer to the peak levels. Next Quarterly Review of RBI on March 17 will be keenly watched.
EQUITY MARKET REVIEW
Ahead of the Union Budget expectations and geopolitical pressure, the equity markets in the month of February remain in bearish zone. The major indices; BSE-Sensex and Nifty-50 settled at 17823.40 and 5333.25 levels down by 2.75% and 3.14% respectively.
Except the BSE FMCG sector, all other major sectoral
indices registered negative growth in the month. The
Real estate sector grossly under-performed with
11.09% negative growth whereas the Mid-cap and
Small-caps were around 7.2% down in February'11.
During the month, 24 out of 30 stocks in Sensex and
38 out of 50 stocks posted negative returns. The
ADAG stocks like Reliance Communication (down by
around 30%), Reliance Infrastructure(down by around
12%) due the CBI questioning to the group Chairman
Anil Ambani as a part of its probe into the 2G spectrum
scam. Similarly in Auto segment, Hero Honda and
M&M were down more than 10% and in Metal sector,
the Hindalco and Sterlite registered a negative returns
of around 12%.
The FIIs continued to be sellers for the second
consecutive month of 2011. They sold around equity
worth `4585.50 crore during February. The total
outflow since the beginning of the year 2011 has been
to the tune of `9398.60 crore. The domestic mutual
funds turned out to be the buyers to the extent of
`1121.10 crore till 25th February'11.
The Union Budget, declared on 28th February'11 was
greeted by a optimistic rally where the Sensex rose as
much as 595 points on no negative surprises in the
Budget. The entry of foreign national in Mutual Fund
industry, fiscal discipline, no increase in the excise
duties led the market rally. However, once the initial
euphoria is over, the Sensex closed at 17823.40 (up by
122.49 points) and Nifty at 5333.25 (up by 29.70
points) on the Budget day.
Outlook:
There are no major negatives left on the domestic
front. The budget declared did not have any negative
surprises and was focused mainly on rising inflation
and inclusive growth. The fiscal deficit as % to GDP
revised for 2010-11 to 5.1% from 5.5% and is
estimated to 4.6% 2011-12. The Equity market now is
cognizant towards the global cues and seem to be
cautiously moving upward. The corporate results also
might not be far away from the expectations. The
Elections in April and May will be another factor that
will decide the course of action for the equity market.
However, the growth expectations of 9-9.25% for
2011-12, increasing infrastructure spending, robust
government revenue collection gives a long term
positive outlook of Indian economy. Hence, inspite of
the range bound market in near future, the long term
outlook seem to be optimistic.

" Lower than expected net borrowing of Rs.3.43 lakh crores and Gross Borrowing of Rs.4.17 lakh crore, as against Rs.4.27 lakh crore in the last fiscal.
" Tighter Fiscal Deficit Target at 4.6% of GDP for next fiscal, against market expectation of 4.80%.
" Increase in FII investment limit in Debt to $40 billion.
