Lesson 7
Bell Ringer:
1. Explain the Law of Superposition in
your own words.
2. Draw a picture to describe this law.

Metamorphic

Teacher’s Answer:
According to the Law of Superposition, in
undisturbed horizontal sedimentary rock
layers the oldest layer is at the bottom.
Each higher layer is younger than the layers
below it. The deeper you go, the older the
rocks are.

Superposition

• Teacher will discuss river rocks and Human
Impact on Earth and Everglades canal system

Notes: How Humans have Impacted the Earth
1. Deforestation - cutting down forests causes loss of native species and erosion
2. Urbanization - building communities to live in
3. Desertification - the process by which an area becomes a desert because of droughts, deforestation, or inappropriate agriculture.
4. Erosion - (ex. Erosion occurs when you cut down vegetation and don’t replant back again)
5. Air & Water Quality - Humans have polluted air and water
6. Changing Flow of Water - (ex. Everglades)
Formative Assessment:
Review for Unit Test:
Igneous means ____1____. A ____2____ rock forms when lava or magma cools. When magma hardens underground it forms ____3____. When lava erupts,
cools, and hardens on the Earth’s surface it is called a ____4____. ____5____ rock forms when small particles of rocks or the remains of plants and animals are pressed and cemented together. ____6____ is the process of cementation that turns sediment into stone. ____7____ rock forms when a rock is changed by heat or pressure or by chemical reactions. They form deep underneath the ground.
Review for Unit Test:
1. An igneous rock can become a sedimentary rock through the process of __________and__________, then _________, and _________.
2. A sedimentary rock can become a metamorphic rock through the process of _________ and ________.
3. A metamorphic rock can become an igneous rock through the process of _________ and then _________ again.
Name_______ Date _____Period ____

Homework:
1. View BrainPop – Everglades again and take quiz – (questions and correct answers)
2. Listen to the songs and finish any class work or homework you haven’t done during this unit.
3. Review BrainPops and StudyJams for this Unit 4. Call your Study Buddy and review weathering and
erosion, the 3 types of rocks and how they form, the rock cycle, Law of Superposition, Ages of Rocks, and Human Impact on Earth.
