Dear Friends,
Mark Twain once said, “The reports of my death are greatly exaggerated.” In 2017, our Memphis Public Libraries are more alive than ever. Ten years ago, our libraries offered about 1,800 programs and activities to nearly 44,000 people. Today, there are over 5,500 programs and activities with 96,000+ participants!
In the past year, our libraries have expanded hours and added staff. A new library branch is being built in Raleigh, the Cossitt Library downtown is slated for renovation, and smaller enhancements are underway at Crenshaw, Randolph, North, and Parkway Village. We’ve hosted seed swaps, performances, and ukulele classes. WYPL, our 24 hour radio station is now streaming live around the world. Customers are downloading e-books, checking out laptops, recording music, and learning foreign languages.
All of this would not be possible without private support. The Memphis Public Libraries is nationally recognized for its innovative programs and services, but operates on a significantly lower per capita budget than nearly all its peer cities, including Nashville, Birmingham, and St. Louis. The Memphis Library Foundation fills critical public funding gaps to enhance our libraries and provide an experience beyond the basics.
Please help us keep the momentum going by making a donation to the Memphis Library Foundation before the end of 2017.
Thank you for your support!

“It is great to provide the children with storytime like this, to get them interacting with other babies. Plus the children are exposed to the new words, new songs. Thank you for providing this for them!” – GRANDMOTHER OF A CHILD, VISITING A DISCOVERREAD SPACE
IMPACTINGChildren
In addition to funding hundreds of childrens programs throughout the libraries, the Foundation helped create 8 new DiscoverREAD centers, our new interactive learning spaces for families. They are now open at: Central, Crenshaw, Gaston Park, and Parkway Village. They are in progress at: Frayser, Hollywood, Levi, and South.
The centers are designed to help children build early literacy skills and enter kindergarten ready to succeed.
Music was in the air as the Foundation helped present 5 Fridays of Jazz at the Central Library this past spring. More than 3,000 people attended the free and festive live jazz concerts and a great time was had by all. This fall, the Front Porch Music Series was launched in partnership with the Levitt Shell. The free concerts take place at the Central Library on the second Tuesday of every month, allowing visitors to experience a wide variety of musical genres.
INSPIRINGAdults
A new series of programs for seniors recently began, which
includes sessions on money management, elder care,
financial fraud, and estate planning. Some of our most
popular programs for seniors continue, including free tax assistance, art classes, and
“Techy Seniors.”
“I wanted to let you know that Moesha really enjoyed the AutoZone STEM Camp and her team also won the points challenge. She is now back at home and is still talking about her experience.” - MOTHER OF SUMMER CAMP PARTICIPANT
For the twelfth year in a row, the Foundation secured funding to provide free youth summer camps. A new addition this year was the popular Tween Tech Camp. Our libraries hosted 12 free summer camps at 4 different branches, serving more than 250 students between the ages of 10 and 18. Subjects ranged from robotics and coding, to music and art.

“A couple from Hughes, AR came to the Library to inquire about filing their taxes. They arrived late in the day, and our tax helpers already had many people waiting. Knowing how far they had come, I spoke with the lead tax consultant, who said she couldn’t see another person. I explained the distance they had driven, and she told me to send them over. I escorted the couple to her, and during our conversation, the husband was very appreciative and told me he was a dignitary in his town and gave me his phone number, saying if I ever came through, to stop for a bite or to go fishing! They were such an enjoyable couple and made my day! We’d like to think we made theirs too.” - LINC 2-1-1, COMMUNITY RESOURCE ROOM MANAGER
CLOUD901 teen Emi Otsuki and her friend Summer Knowles created a video for the national Toyota Video Challenge competition. Theirs was the winning entry, earning them a $15,000 prize plus the opportunity to work with a Discovery Channel film crew to transform their PSA video into a TV-ready commercial. Their video entry was filmed and edited in the video lab at CLOUD901.
“We’re proud of these creative young film makers, and our CLOUD901 staff for guiding them,” said Memphis Library Foundation Executive Director Diane Jalfon. “Emi is sharp and focused, and I believe the things she’s involved with are just the beginning of so much more to come,” said Shelley Thomas, also with the Memphis Library Foundation.
Emi said that she values the access to technology and expertise at CLOUD901, along with the opportunity to network with other teens.
Check out the PSA video they submitted at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ug1CWUBATNg, and keep an eye out for the final commercial.
