Regionale landbouwsystemen enlandschap in Vlaanderen
in de Middeleeuwen en hetAncien Régime
Erik Thoen
Landschapscontactdag 4 oktober 2013, Beveren
2
• Path dependency: oorspronkelijk ‘feodale’
6
7
Een veranderende agro-systemische aanpak nodig voor
19-20ste eeuw
8
Studie niveau’s
Ruimere invloeden (max= wereldsystemen)
Supraregionale invloed
Reginaal socuiaal agros-systeemRegionaal sociaal agro-systeem
Maar.. 1/ Ook ‘supraregionale elementen’ spelen mee
2/ Sociale agrosystemen hebben mekaar onderling beinvloed. Vb via arbeidsrelaties
Gelijkend soc agrosysteem = identiek landschap?
9

Coastal Flanders:
-13th century: survival economy with commons (SEC)
-14th century:Commer-cial Business Economy (CBE)
13
Inland Flanders (CSE) Coastal Flanders (CBE) - Light sandy soils - concurrence between lords - very slow and uncomplete
expropriation of the peasants - micro holdings + - labour organisation based on
collaboration + - survival of the family was
the goal for production + - markets were used for
survival + - intensive agriculture was
used to increase physical productivity +
- protoindustry important +
- variety of soils mostly and progressively more heavy clay
- collaboration between lordly classes
- progressive and fast expropriation from the peasants (leaseholding +)
- large and middlesized holdings + - labour organisation based on
concurrence + - survival of the farm was the core
of the production strategy+ - markets were tools for making
profits and investment + - intensive agriculture to make
economies - protoindustry not important -

Reasons for changes coastal and stability in inland Flanders
– Changes in coastal Flanders caused by: environmental problems / Changing propertuy structures/ lack of investments (peat compaction and lowering of the surface level) / support governement ( path dependency)/ peat extracted/ wages
– Inertion and even increase of in coastal Flanders caused by: • Property structures stable• towns demand for protoindustrial products• Moving population• Growing ‘convivium’ between larger and small farms_lower wages
– Inland Flanders: stabilty, and characteristics became more extreme

18
Social agro-systems: eerste poging tot typologie• 1.Gesloten economie (self-sufficiency): dit type heeft weinig bestaan, weinig markt;
productieproces (feodale periode vroege ME, sommige regio’s, nieuwe feodale periode MT O-Europa?)– 2a Met onvrijheid– 2b Zonder onvrijheid
– (Kust-Vlaanderen vanaf 15de eeuw; Gelders rivieren,gebied vanaf 15-16de eeuw, Holland 17de eeuw)

schaal• Agrarisch ‘collectivisme’ verschillend• Bodem toch verschillend• Ontginningsdatum verschillend

Protoindustry in inland Flanders is going up: flax and linen processing
27
centra (Karolingische hofkouters)

Kust-Vlaanderen• Naar extensieve landbouw• Grotere percelen of samengestelde groepen plus concentratie rond
