The Kingdom of Poland entered the history of European culture from the baptism of Mieszko I in 966. It had moments of glory and was one of the largest states in Europe. Thereafter, the Battle of Vienna, during which the troops of King Jan Sobieski stopped the progression of the Ottoman Empire in Europe, occurred in 1683. At the end of the 18th century, after the first partition of Poland in 1772, King Stanislas August Poniatowski tried to reform and modernize deep political structures of the Polish state. He endowed Poland a constitution, the first on the European continent, which was passed on May 3, 1791. During the period 1918-1939, the Second Republic of Poland lived under the threat of its two big neighbors, Germany and Russia, and when the Second World War began in September 1939, there was a new partition of Poland territory under Nazi domination and Sovietic domination. For Poland, second World war ends at the cost of a new loss of his freedom, as happens with the agreement of the victorious Western powers, under Soviet domination in 1945. Sad news and a long period, including Poland economically battered out in 1989, ends with the birth of the Solidarity movement in 1980 and the fall of the Berlin Wall on November,9 1989. Thus begins a new page, that of the Third Republic of Poland, which we are currently experiencing and a great time of which was the hard negotiated entry of Poland into the European Union in 2004.
