The Italian Parish of Indianapolis
B envenuto! Welcome to Holy Rosary
Church! Whether you are a lifelong
parishioner, a first-time visitor to our
parish, or someone in between, we
are grateful you have joined us today.
Founded in 1909 as the Italian Parish of
Indianapolis, we continue to serve as
the parish home of people of Italian
heritage and also embrace all Catholics
in union with Rome, including those
devoted to the Traditional Latin Mass
(Extraordinary Form) and the Anglican
Usage of the Roman Rite.
In the words of our founding pastor,
Msgr. Marino Priori:
“The church is the temple of the
Lord, the gate of heaven. Come after a
week of earthly cares, after so much
toil, after so many sorrows, after so
much pain. Rest your limbs. Regenerate
your spirit at the sources of grace.
Raise your mind to God; thank Him for
the benefits received through His
creation and in daily life; ask for
strength so you can win all of life’s
struggles, and be able to posses the
fruits of redemption.”

NOVEMBER: MONTH OF THE HOLY SOULS “From the beginning the Church has honored the memory of the dead and offered prayers in suffrage for
them, above all the Eucharistic sacrifice, so that, thus purified, they may attain the beatific vision of God.”
— Catechism of the Catholic Church
Be sure to assist your deceased loved ones by including them in our annual All Souls Remem-
brance. Write their names on one of the envelopes available at the St. Joseph altar — an offering
is optional. We will place these envelopes on our high altar throughout the month of November. Purgatory, Gustav Dore

In the Apostles‟ Creed we confess, “I believe … in
the communion of the saints … ” This is one of the
most comforting teachings of the Church — that we
are not alone; that we are not the first; that there are
others like us who have already forged the path.
These realities offer great consolations to Catholics.
The communion of saints is a recognition that part
of being human is being in a community, and that
part of being divine — in light of the teaching on the
Trinity — is being in communion with other persons
of a similar or like nature. It is often on this very
point that Catholic Christians come to an impasse
with Protestant Christians.
Essentially the teaching on the communion of saints
is a recognition that, if we are able to be baptized
into a relationship with God as His sons and daugh-
ters, then we are able and obliged to relate to one an-
other as brothers and sisters. And, just like in any
family, we hold certain things in common. In this
case, those things are: the deposit of faith including
the sacraments; the treasury of graces merited by
those who have gone before us; and then whatever
worldly goods the Church owns, She holds for us in
common. As the Catechism of the Catholic Church
(No. 948) reminds us, “Faith is a treasure of life which
is enriched by being shared.”
This Communion among the holy ones of God
(anyone baptized) is expressed in three ways:
1) Communion of the sacraments. “The fruit of all
the sacraments belongs to all the faithful. All the sac-
raments are sacred links uniting the faithful with one
another and binding them to Jesus Christ, and above
all Baptism, the gate by which we enter into the
Church. The communion of saints must be under-
stood as the communion of the sacraments. … The
name „communion‟ can be applied to all of them, for
they unite us to God. … But this name is better
suited to the Eucharist than to any other, because it is
primarily the Eucharist that brings this communion
about” (CCC, No. 950).
2) Communion of charisms. “Within the communion
of the Church, the Holy Spirit „distributes special
graces among the faithful of every rank‟ for the build-
ing up of the Church. Now, „to each is given the mani-
festation of the Spirit for the common good‟ ” (CCC,
No. 951).
3) Communion in charity. “In the sanctorum com-
munio, „None of us lives to himself, and none of us
dies to himself.‟ „If one member suffers, all suffer
together; if one member is honored, all rejoice to-
gether. Now you are the body of Christ and individu-
ally members of it.‟ „Charity does not insist on its
own way.‟ In this solidarity with all men, living or
dead, which is founded on the communion of saints,
the least of our acts done in charity redounds to the
profit of all. Every sin harms this communion” (CCC,
No. 953).
These forms of communion are what truly unite the
three states of the Church: Militant, Suffering and
Triumphant. The sacramental unity is experienced by
the Church militant in the Sacraments, the Church
Suffering in the graces merited for them through the
sacraments, and the Church Triumphant in their
heavenly participation in the Supper of the Lamb.
The charismatic unity is recognized in the hierarchi-
cal structure in the Church at all stages; we are each
unique and therefore have a unique place in Divine
Providence at all times and stages of our existence.
The charitable unity is seen in all things because it is
the Love of Christ that informs and sustains the
Church in every moment and every place She exists
in fulfillment of the two great commands.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
“Mercy changes the World!”
On this 90th World Mission Sunday, October 23, our
archdiocesan family joins our brothers and sisters around
the world who will gather at the Lord‟s Table to
celebrate, with great joy, our common vocation as
missionaries. Our prayers and financial help, through the
Society of the Propagation of the Faith, support the work
of the Mission Church, its witness to Christ and service
to the poor. As Pope Francis reminds us in his Message
for World Mission Sunday 2016:
“Let us not close our hearts within our own particular
concerns, but let us open them to all of humanity.”
I echo these words of our Holy Father, asking you to
open your hearts as you connect on World Mission
Sunday with every corner of the globe … with the
Americas, where catechists travel to remote areas to
bring the Good News of God‟s great love to families;
with Europe, where new churches are being built to
welcome faith communities, renewed after years of
persecution; with Asia, where six million children
receive an education from Religious Sisters in some
16,000 Church-run elementary schools; with the Pacific
Islands, where 1,000 young men are preparing for
priesthood, to bring the Lord‟s healing hope and peace to
those in need; with Africa, where those who are sick are
provided with loving care at 6,400 Catholic hospitals and
small clinics.
You can also continue this connection with the
Missions all year long, through MISSIO, online at
mission.org or on your phone.
Grateful always for your generosity of spirit and heart,
and confident of your missionary commitment to share
the joy of the Gospel and help the poor, I pray for
blessings for you and your families! Sincerely yours in Christ the Redeemer,
+ Joseph W. Tobin, C.Ss.R.

America needs your prayers during our 40 Hours Adoration
We ask our parishioners to make an ex-
tra effort to join us for 40 Hours of Ado-
ration for America. The
Blessed Sacrament will be
exposed on our altar through-
out most of the time begin-
ning at 1:30 p.m. Sunday,
Oct. 23, and ending after a 7
p.m. Mass Tuesday, Oct. 25.
A detailed schedule appears
at the end of this article.
We are offering these hours of Eucharis-
tic Adoration at a critical time in our na-
tion. Among the many issues confronting
us, religious freedom is in peril, tradi-
tional marriage is under attack, terrorism
remains a threat, an undercurrent of vio-
lence percolates in some neighborhoods
and — still — abortion, euthanasia and
other attacks on innocent Life are ram-
pant. A contentious national election will
be conducted next month, and the ramifi-
cations of its results could last a genera-
tion or more.
America needs our prayers. And for our
40 Hours of Adoration to work well, we
need parishioners — and others who wish
to join us — to spend time with Blessed
Sacrament at the appointed times. We es-
pecially need people to sign up for the
overnight hours. Please consider making
this sacrifice for the good of our country,
our state and our neighborhoods.
The 40 Hours is being offered in addi-
tion to the Election Day Adoration we
will host on Tuesday, Nov. 8. On Election
Day, with the sponsorship of the Knights
of Columbus Santo Rosario Council
14449, the Blessed Sacrament will be ex-
posed from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. — as long as
the polls are open in Indiana — except
during Masses at 6:30 a.m. (Anglican
Use), 7:30 a.m. (Ordinary Form) and 5:45
p.m. (Extraordinary Form).
