FROM THE PRINCIPAL – Clare Roser Narrogin Youth Girl’s AFL Carnival
Last week our Year 7-10 girls made the trip to Narrogin with Mr Kirwen and Mrs Shepherd to play in the first of the
Girl’s AFL carnivals for 2019. The Carnival was organised by the Stephen Michael Foundation to expose the students
to AFL and also to identify potential talent within the Great Southern district. There will be another carnival planned for
Term 3. We were also able to provide umpires for the carnival from our Year 9/10 group. Thanks to Riley McIllree,
Chantelle Evans and Crystal Howell for their expertise in goal and field umpiring. Congratulations must go to Georgia
Williams, who was awarded fairest and best for her team.
Stephen Michael Foundation Perth Trip
We were fortunate in being invited, for the second year in a row, to participate in the Perth Optus Stadium trip. This
year the focus was on a boy’s only Little League game involving 10 of our Year 5-7 students. The group stayed at the
YHA in Fremantle and attended a WAFL game at South Fremantle Oval and a SBL game at Willetton Basketball
Stadium. The boys were very excited to get onto the ground for their half time game at the Brisbane Lions vs
Fremantle Dockers game and were able to meet some of the Dockers players at Benny’s restaurant, later in the day.
An added bonus was the invite to send 6 of our Year 7-10 students to play in the curtain raiser. As you can see from
all of the photos, the students had a fantastic time.

Nightfields Program In partnership with the Stephen Michael Foundation, the Kojonup Shire and extended community will begin the Nightfields sport program on Friday 7
th June. The program is open to all children from the district, 6yrs to 18yrs. There
is no cost and registration is on a session by session basis. Each session runs from 3.30pm-5.30pm, children will be split into 3 age groups 6-10 years, 11-14 years and 15+ and will rotate through 3 sporting activities. This term the focus will be AFL, Hockey and Netball. The aim of the program is to have fun, try a new sport and meet new people. Parents of children in the 6-10 year old group are asked to stay for the session. (See flyer in the newsletter). Gymnastics Program Mr Kirwen was successful in applying for funding through the Sport in Schools initiative and has organised for the students to receive a number of coaching sessions from a qualified gymnastics coach. Permission slips have been sent home and must be returned in order for your child to participate. Could you please note any pre-existing injuries; that the coach needs to be aware of, when you complete the medical update section. School Bus Parking Area Could all parents please refrain from using the school bus driveway and parking areas to drop off or collect their children, before and after school. This is extremely dangerous for those children catching the bus and also for the drivers who are trying to manoeuvre a large vehicle in a small space. The area is very clearly signposted. There is ample parking just to the left of this area, in the gravel carpark on the hill. Staff on Leave I would like to inform all parents that Mr Trouchet will be on leave for the rest of this term. Mrs Bignell will be covering the Secondary Mathematics classes for this time and Ms Cremen will take on a full time role in the Year 3.2 class for the rest of Term 2.
FROM THE DEPUTY PRINCIPAL – Clive Reardon Welcome to week 6. Thank you to Mr Kirwen, students, parents and staff of KDHS who ran a very successful and well
organised Annual Cross Country Run. It was very pleasing to see all our competitors giving their very best to complete
the course whilst enjoying and taking, head on, the many challenges along the way. From an observers’ perspective
the event was enjoyed by all who participated, helped or observed. Congratulations to all.
Semester 1 student reports will be coming home. As always, we encourage you to, thoroughly, go through it with your
child/ren. Here is a terrific opportunity for you to discuss the information contained within the report with your child/ren,
working out what is being said, advised or recommended. It is also an opportunity for you to reflect on how you may
be able to assist from home with the learning journey of your child/ren.
A timely reminder to parents and guardians please that with the change in weather please ensure that your children
are suitably attired with warm clothing and appropriate sensible footwear for those wet, cold windy days ahead. As
always, we encourage all our students from K-10 to wear our school uniform or at the very least our school colours
which is navy blue.
In the primary section of our school our students in the main continue to follow our school and playground rules as
well as adhere to our four PBS Expectations and this of course is very pleasing indeed. Our days flow smoother and
we spend a lot more time focussing on things that matter like teaching and learning instead of dealing with
misbehaviour and the consequences that follow. We fully encourage this pattern to continue and we will work along
with our student body to ensure its longevity.
The Commissioner for Children and Young People Survey 2019
This year The Commissioner for Children and Young People (Mr Colin Pettit) has invited Kojonup District High School
along with a number of other randomly selected schools to actively participate in their survey. The purpose of this
survey for students from Yr. 4 – 12 is to seek their views on matters that affect their wellbeing. Thirty randomly
selected students by (CCYP) will complete a 30-40 minute survey on a tablet. The survey date for our students is
Monday 24.06.2019 in the Common Room at KDHS from 2:00 – 3:00 pm. Letters and emails will be going out to the
parents/guardians of the selected students fully informing them about the survey. There is an Information package for
Parents/Guardians and an Information for Students Years 4-6 and Years 7-12. Please go through the information
thoroughly, if you have any questions and or queries please call us on 08 9831 3300.
Until our next edition; may it rain, or not, depending on your agricultural wants and needs.
Stay well, play nicely together and tight lines.
INTER-HOUSE CROSS COUNTRY
HERCULES – 1172 AQUILA – 1112 PHOENIX – 715 On Friday the 24
th May, we held our annual Inter-House Cross Country Carnival. The event involved all students from
Pre-Primary – Year 10. Students ran courses of different lengths, from 1km up to 4.2km; through various terrains, including up at the School Farm (depending on age groups). Points received from running went towards house and championship points which resulted in a Champion and Runner-up Boy and Girl from each age group and a Champion House; the results are below. Congratulations to Hercules who were our House Champions and to the students who received winner and runner-up medals. Students had spent time in Physical Education improving their fitness by running the practice track, playing fitness games and more. Thank you to everyone involved in the planning, organisation and delivery of the carnival. PRE-PRIMARY EXCURSION
Monday 27th May the Pre-Primary class went off on an adventure to explore Kodja Place. They were very excited and
soaked in all the amazing cultural education and experiences. The class enjoyed a lovely warm Billy Milo with damper, they learnt the song “Head, Shoulder, Knees and Toes” in Noongar and had a play at Yoondi’s Mia Mia. The Pre-Primarys were fascinated in learning about school in the olden days and were totally engaged in their art activity, learning the symbols for different animal tracks. Thank you to Kodja Place, the volunteers and everyone involved in making this enriched learning experience run smoothly and safely for the Pre-Primary class.
