Suchindram Temple

Thiruvalluvar Statue

Vivekananda Memorial or the Vivekananda Rock Memorial is the temple compound on one of the huge rock islands, lying some 500 meters off the tip of the Indian peninsula. On these rocks, which were considered sacred since ancient times, Swami Vivekananda had attained enlightenment after a prolonged meditation in the year 1892. He had reached the place by swimming through the harsh waters of the adjoining sea. His had stayed for three days from 24th of December to 26th of December. Excursions can be made from Kanyakumari to the district headquarter Nagercoil, famous for a temple dedicated to Nagaraja or Lord of the snakes from which the city derives its name. You can also visit St.Xavier's Church at Nagercoil. Nearby are the Olakkay Aruvi waterfalls. Suchindram is 13 km from Kanyakumari and has a famous temple dedicated to a deity, which is interestingly a combination of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. Temple excursions can be made to the Lord Subramanya Temple at Kumarakovil, 34 m away from Kanyakumari and the Mandaikkadu Bhagvathy Amman temple, 41 km away, a small 7th century temple where the Amman is in the shape of a five headed anthill which is believed to be growing. Those interested in forts and the history of the region should visit Padmanabhapuram, which encloses the palace of the Travancore kings. Udayagiri Fort built in the 18th century by King Marthanda is fascinating. It also has the tomb of his trusted Dutch General De Lennoy. Pechipparai Dam, 56 km from Kanyakumari is an ideal spot for picnic and boating.

Places to see in and around Tirunelveli

Nellaiappar Temple- The Nellaiappar Temple with Kanthimathi lies in the heart of the town. The distance from the railhead is 2 km. The Nellaiappar Temple is essentially a twin temple which is devoted to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvathi. Temple Garden- Thiruvengadakrishna Mudaliar planned this picturesque garden. It is famous for its variety of bright and sweet-smelling flowers. Nanguneri- Nanguneri is a holy town which lies at a distance of 31 km from Tirunelveli. The place is famous for the Vishnu mandir (temple) whose principal idol is Thotathri Nathan. The Vanamamalai Matha looks after the mandir and it is home to the famous oil well or Ennai Kinaru. Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve Wild Life Sanctuary- The Mundanthurai-Kalakad Wildlife Sanctuary got the status of a National Tiger Reserve in 1988. The wildlife reserve covers an overall area of 817 sq km and is a part of the Tirunelveli district in the southernmost segment of the Western Ghat mountain range. Papanasam Dam- The Papanasam Dam is situated at a distance of 49 km from Tirunelveli and is a picturesque picnic spot. Sri Alzhiya Mannar Rajagopala Swamy Temple- This holy temple is located at the Palayamkottai region in South Bazzar. It has a history of one thousand years and is a well-known Perumal mandir. Sankaran Kovil- The Sankaran Kovil lies at a distance of 56 Km from Tirunelveli. It is also known as Sankaranainarkoil and is easily accessible from the town and other areas of the districts through bus services. The earth is worshipped in this temple and it is epitomized by the lingam. Ukkirapandiyan constructed this temple who reigned over this place in the beginning of the 11th century AD. Manjolai- Manjolai is a viewer's delight en route for Upper Kodaiyar. Travelers come here for picnic and excursion. The distance is 57 km from Thirunelveli and the altitude is 1162 meters. Thiruvalluvar Two Tier Bridge- This two level over bridge which is known as Thiruvalluvar Bridge is located at the Tirunelveli Junction. It was built to keep away from the rail line crossing. The bridge is 800 meters long and is the oldest two-tier bridge in India. It started operating since 1972. Tenkasi- Tenkasi is located at a distance of 53 km from the city. Thiruvenkatanathar is the principal idol here. Ariyakulam- Ariyakulam is located at a distance of 13 km from the town of Tirunelveli. A host of avifauna gathers here during the period of March to June for reproduction. Koonthakulam- Koonthakulam is located at a distance of 30 km from Thirunelveli. It is a famous bird refuge as well. Maninuthar Dam- The Maninuthar Dam is a famous dam in Tirunelveli District and lies at a distance of 47 km from Thirunelveli. The place is famous for its clean and healthy weather and beautiful gardens. It is a popular spot for vacationing. Sri Varadharaja Perumal Temple- Sri Varadharaja Perumal Kovil or Temple lies in Tirunelveli Junction. Located on the riverbanks of the Thamirabarani this temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. Mela Thiruvenkatanathapuram Temple- This famous temple is situated at a distance of 7-10 km towards the southwest of Tirunelveli. It lies on the riverbanks of the Thamirabarani river and is dedicated to Lord Srinivasa. Thirunankovil is another name of the temple. Keezha Thirupathi or Keezha Thiruvenkatanathapuram- This temple has a number of similarities with the renowned Thirupathi temple. The 'Taen Kalahasthi' temple is closely located to this mandir and the distance is around 250 meters in the east. The principal deity here is Lord Shiva. Upper Kodaiyar- Upper Kodaiyar lies on the southernmost point of the Western Ghats mountain range edging the state of Kerala. The place is known for its scenic features and lush green jungles. There are a number of rubber and cardamom orchards in this place. Ayyanar Sunai- The Ayyanar Sunai is located at a distance of 40 Km from Tiruchendur. It houses a natural 'Spring' where people can fetch water round the year. There is a temple which is dedicated to Ayyanar (the village god). The place is used for picnic and recreation.
