Book Week has come and gone again for another year! All the children enjoyed a fantastic week of activities relating to the theme, “Reading Is My Secret Power”. During the week we had some guest readers who gave up their time to entertain the children with some exhilarating stories and animated reading. Thank you to Mr Hinton, Mr Armstrong and Ms Taylor for their time. The huge numbers of children lining up eagerly at lunchtimes to head to the library indicated the popularity of this. Once again many children participated in the various competitions run during book week. There were some outstanding efforts in all areas including writing, colouring in, bookmarks, quiz, models and book covers. The time and effort put into these was tremendous and showed off many of the children’s creative skills. The effort by parents and teachers to help children enter these competitions is very much appreciated. Thanks also to our guest judge. Throughout the week the Library also ran a “Book Fair”. Once again this was a fantastic success with many purchases being made. Thirty five percent of this figure goes towards the purchase of library books. Many thanks to all parents, children, staff and community for your generous support. Mrs Maclean does a wonderful job organising and setting up the book fair. The highlight of the week was the “Character Parade” and Book Week assembly. We were very impressed with the vast array of characters turning up for the day and their wonderful behaviour and participation. The presentation of Children’s Book Council awards was ably presented by some of our senior primary students. Our talented students entertained the large audience in attendance with four class items. A big thank you to Ms Hickey and 1/2 Meerkats for their performance of the “The Cat in the Hat”. This was followed up by students in the primary reciting two poems led by Mrs Bruce. It was fantastic to see Mrs Mulvaney’s kindergarten students performing “Reading Rocks”. Finally, the primary music students who attend music with Mrs Evans and Mr Leman performed a musical item to conclude the assembly. Thank you to Mr Leman for supporting the students on the day. I would particularly like to thank the staff for their support of book week as they have been extremely busy this term. Finally, thank you to all children for your efforts with the competitions and dressing up and to all parents for continuing to support our amazing school library. Mrs N. Whittaker - Teacher Librarian

Reading is my Secret Power!
Last week saw our annual book week for 2019. Over the week, a number of teachers read to primary school students
and it was great to see so many excited faces and lots of laughter while those readings were occurring. That’s what
we try to instil in our children here at Warren Central School – a love of learning and part of this is having fun at
school. I certainly had a lot of fun watching the assembly and I would like to extend my thanks to Mrs Whittaker for all
her hard work and preparation over a number of months for this flagship week and celebration every year. I would also
like to thank Mrs Maclean and Mrs Judy Ridley who made a special guest appearance at the assembly, interviewing
the students about their costumes. It was fantastic to see so many teachers dress up and involve themselves in book
week as well as the number of parents who attended the assembly. If there is one thing a parent can do to help their
kids, it is to read to them on a daily basis. This has a huge and positive impact on your child’s learning.
Trial HSC Exams
These are ongoing at the moment and provide a provisional analysis as to where students are at and what they need to do further in preparation for their HSC Exams next term. If you would like some more information as to how you as a parent/carer can help your child, have a look here at the Year 12 survival plan - https://www.learningpotential.gov.au/year-12-survival-plan NAPLAN 2019
These results should be available shortly. Your child will receive these results in a sealed envelope. If not, check their
bags. This data will be used in part to plan for every child’s needs in 2020.
SASS Appreciation Week
This week we celebrate the hard work and dedication of our highly professional school support and administrative staff
(SASS) here at the school. Often referred to as the ‘engine room’ of the school, our team works tirelessly to ensure
our school runs smoothly each and every day. I would like to formally thank each and every SASS member of staff –
you are highly valued and your work is so vital to our school being successful.
Excursions
As you will see, there have been a number of academic, sporting and wellbeing excursions of late – I encourage you
all to read the detail in this week’s Jumbunna.
Some good news stories from around the world...
In the first six months of 2019, sun, wind, water and biomass produced more electricity in the world’s fourth largest
economy than coal and nuclear combined (Deutsche Welle).

Head Lice
Please check your children’s hair every weekend for head lice and/or nits
and treat if necessary. This is a very important part of hygiene and it helps
to keep head lice to a minimum in our school.
Attendance Too many of our students are absent from school without the school being informed of the reason. It is a legal requirement that all absences must be explained. Please remember to contact the school if your student is absent for any period of time, whether it be one hour, one day or a number of days. If a student’s attendance drops below 88% he/she is put on a Personalised Attendance Plan to assist in increasing attendance. If you collect your child from sick bay and your child is still ill the following day/s, you must notify the school on those following days as we cannot assume that they are still sick. Students who are away without the school being notified are marked with an unjustified absence.
Western Region Athletics Carnival

SAS Staff Recognition Week: 26 - 30 August Recognition Week for SASS staff is this week. We appreciate the wonderful work you do and encourage the school community to recognise and say thank you. It is a time to stop for a moment and contemplate the tremendous work done by the School Support and Administrative Staff at Warren Central School. SASS cover a wide range of roles within the school. In fact, the school would stop in an instant without these dedicated staff in Administration, Learning Support, Grounds, Repair and Improvements, Library Assistance, Technology Support, Kitchen Assistance and Laboratory Assistance.
Work Experience at Fire and Rescue NSW provides school students in Years 10 to 12 the opportunity to develop
industry-specific and generic work skills in an authentic work environment at the Fire and Rescue NSW Emergency
Services Academy, Orchard Hills. The practical program covers the roles of Fire and Rescue NSW and its firefight-
ers. Through this program, school students gain insight into the organisation and develop employment related skills
to enhance their vocational education. The program is offered weekly during school terms. The four-day program is
highly valued by students, parents and careers advisors. If students are interested in enrolling in the program, we
suggest that they enrol as early as possible to avoid disappointment.

Sport
Ronny Gibbs Sports Day – Bourke Wednesday 21 August
Last Wednesday 25 secondary students represented Warren Central School at the 24th Ronny Gibbs sports day in
Bourke, and they were sensational!
The 5am start did not deter the kids, their parents and their keen teachers. The roos were also out in force lining
the roads to wish the kids luck and a great day. They even all managed to avoid the bus, one even tried to have a
look through the window, luckily Mr Zayied saw him coming. As the bus made its way through Nyngan and beyond,
Mr Zayied played guide and animal spotter, even though no one had asked him to do so. With is eagle eyes he
made sure no one missed out on seeing the goats (sheep), echidnas (cats), and pigs (goat).
A mandatory stop was required to refuel and build up energy stores for the day. The bakery seemed to do the trick,
unfortunately Mr Zayied was still recovering from mistaking a cat for an echidna and made matters worse by
leaving Mr Hinton without a coffee. Sorry Mr Hinton, I hope the apple pie helped.
To the sport. We had an U14s and Opens Netball team along with our barbarians Opens League team, who
combined with two players from Trangie and one from Nyngan. All three teams won their first round encounters
and were looking the part. Mr Zayied judged the WCS uniforms the best on ground and made sure to let everyone
know.
As the day went on the competition heated up with scores narrowing. Our U14s Netballers finished the round
robins first in their pool and were through to the finals. Our Opens Netball and League teams toiled all day, howev-
er came up short on percentages.
In the end our U14s Netballers just fell short to Trangie in the final by 3 points and were runners up in a field of 13
teams.
The students, staff and parents represented WCS magnificently and an enjoyable day was had by all. A very proud
and slightly sun stroked Mr Zayied commended all students for their participation and impeccable respect through-
out the sports day. Special thanks to our staff, Mrs Fisk, Ms Fuller and Mr Hinton, who supported our teams and
umpired throughout the day, and our parents, Mrs Jo Woolnough and Mrs Carmen Anderson for making the big
effort to drive our U14s Netball team to Bourke and back.
Thank you!

Signal Creative Coonamble
A committed group of young women
from Warren Central School travelled
to Coonamble last week with Mrs
Evans and Ms Oates.
The students attended the opening of
Women Out Front, an art exhibition
installed in the Outback Arts gallery.
Female students in years 5-10 created
art work for this exhibition. Each
artwork reflected the journey the girls
took with Emma & Caroline from
Signal Creative over the past year.
Signal Creative is all about
empowering young women by helping
girls find their voice, find their place,
know thyself! Workshops have been
held at school due to the provision of a
generous grant.
Our Warren girls were kind, caring,
friendly and enthusiastic when meeting
the other students who attended the
exhibition. Qualities that should make
our entire community so proud!

Stage 4 – Years 7 & 8 This term stage 4 science has been learning about Earth Resources and recycling. This unit has involved looking at
strategies to reuse and recycle resources and the processes behind fossil fuel creation and use.
Students in years 7 and 8 currently have a task to create an information poster on the production and use of renewable
and non-renewable resources.
Stage 5 – Years 9 & 10 Following the completion of the unit on Body Systems and Reproduction, year 9 and 10 students have begun looking at
Evolution and Natural Selection. Often a topic that generates much interest and discussion, students have begun
looking at the work of Darwin and Lamarck.
As well as this, Stage 5 students are working on a report into stem cell research to better understand the science
behind it and the ethical questions that surrounds its use.
Stage 6 – Year 11/12 Biology & 12 Investigating Science As our seniors in year 12 reach the culmination of their secondary education, preparations are well under way to make
the best use of time in the lead up to the HSC.
Both year 11 and 12 biology recently completed practical tasks using microscopes to prepare slides and observe cells.
Biology students will continue their work on cells and disease control throughout the term whilst Investigating Science
students turn their attention towards Science and Society.
Water Watch and the Macquarie River Late last term a new field based project was initiated through our Stage 5 and 6 classes to measure the biotic and
abiotic factors along the Macquarie River in Warren. Students have been visiting sites around the first weir and in town
to collect data on water pH, temperature, turbidity and salinity. The project aims to give students first-hand experience
of field work and also broaden their
understanding of the health of the
Macquarie River around Warren.
The project will be offered to select
students in year 10 each year for
the next three years, with field
collection taking place every 7
weeks to develop a reliable set of
data across seasons.
A special thank you to Macquarie
RiverSmart for their support and

Lids for Kids – Envision bottle cap collection in Warren
Last week the first collection point for bottle caps was officially opened at the
Kookaburra Kiosk. Bottle caps will be sent to Envision in Melbourne, where they
will turn the recycled bottle caps into prosthetic mobility aids for disadvantaged
children around the World.
Students from Warren Central School are on board with hundreds of bottle caps
already collected. Students, staff and all families are encouraged to place their
bottle caps in the collection box at the office or directly at the Kookaburra Kiosk.
Approximately 1000 bottle caps produced one mobility aid!
Remember only caps with the recycling 2 or recycling 4 symbol can be used. Flip
your lid, remove the plastic lining and give it a quick rinse before dropping it off.
