From
Fr. Ryan
I'd like to thank everyone for their warm welcome as I have started to serve among you. You are all so wonderful! As I unpack my steamer trunks at the rectory, my desire to be a Franciscan grows and grows. It also reminds me that we are all travelers - pilgrims - in this life. "Pilgrims" are people who make a pilgrimage, a special journey to a place of spiritual significance. You may have gone on pilgrimage to the shrine at Monte Cassino, for example. The pilgrimage is also a reminder that you and I are on our way to a destination - heaven! You may have lived in Posey County your entire life, but this place is not your home. You are built by God to live with him in heaven. This world is merely the pilgrimage, the path, you walk to get there. Pilgrimages always involve suffering and inconvenience. These events themselves remind us that life is difficult and yet leads to something more beautiful and glorious than we could begin to describe. To signify this aspect of pilgrimage, the Church has us place a crucifix in our churches. Gathered around the Cross of Christ, we know that we have to travel the same road that Jesus did - of suffering and pain - in order to arrive at heavenly glory and the joy of the Resurrection. This is also one reason why the priest faced the same direction as the people did during Mass so many years ago. The priest is meant to lead you to heaven by his own example and his own suffering. Though I'm slowly unpacking and going through my things, I must remember that this is my role - to lead by my example and my suffering. Please pray for me as I renew my commitment to you in this way. Fr. Ryan
