Dear RG: Now just why on earth would a guy from New York City want to subscribe to RADIO GUIDE? His radio can't pick up stations outside the NYC area....I'm curious and inter- ested!! That's why! Good luck.
Dan Singer New York, New York
Dear RG: While in Japan, the only thing I could commu- nicate with was my radio. I soon realized how much more I could get over the radio waves. So when I got home, I bought a radio with only two buttons- one marked up, one marked down. It was for elevator music. A friend told me he had mono...I said, "You ought to get stereo!" He nicknamed me "FI" so now when- ever he sees me, he calls out, "HI, FI!" Any- way, if you could send me RADIO GUIDE, I'd
be happier than an aardvark in an ant farm. Timothy Simpson Los Angeles
Sure, Tim. As long as you promise to stay away from amateur nights at comedy clubs.
Dear RG: Just wanted to let you know once again how much we enjoyed your "Sexiest Voice" break- fast at Gorky s! You guys are a class opera- tion. Also wanted to remind you that the Real Don Steele's voice can be heard in the Mi- chael Jackson "Moonwalker" movie. You mentioned you liked to know everything, no matter how small!
Shaune McNamara Assistant Program Director/ Music Director - KRLA -AM
Speaking of voices heard: Jim Ladd's sultry sound was heard in "Say Anything" and KCRW's Tom Schnabel in "Tequila Sunrise." If you readers catch any more local DJs' voices on the big screen, write and let us know!
You want roots music? The Bobs have roots stretching back to the earliest Cro- Magnons gathered in front of the hunting fresco where the guy from the next cave used to come over and sing. Forget about electric guitars or synthesizers. No drums either for this crew. The Bobs (whose Gunnar Madsen has been heard musically spoofing news and public affairs issues on National Pub- lic Radio's "Morning Edition ") don't use anything they weren't born with to perform their a capella composi- tions. Just a couple of finger snaps, thigh slaps and hand claps combined with their four superbly trained voices to create a sparsely lush litany of little observations from everybody's lives. Those voices range from Richard Greene's bassoonery through Janie Scott's clear soul -influenced swoon - ery as the band tackle every musical style from Vegas glitz (in a sleazy cover of the Talking Head's "Psycho Killer ") to reggae (in "Dictator in a Polo Shirt ").
This San Francisco ensemble will create some of the freshest, funni- est and most accessible sounds this side of the laundromat when they headline the Vocal Music Show at Glendale High School Auditorium, 1440 E. Broadway, Glendale, June 23, with song titles that include "Where Does Wayward Footwear Go ?" and "I Hate the Beach Boys." New Traditional, an all -male quartet, and the Masters of Harmony chorus are also on the bill. (818) 240 -4868. -Andrea 'Enthal
OTHER INTERESTS Comedy /Variety: Garrison Keillor's "A Prairie Home Companion" at Universal Amphitheatre, June 9 at 8:15 p.m. and June 10 at 4:15 p.m. The second show will broadcast live on KUSC. Blues: Hollywood Hills Blues Festival featuring Albert Collins, Papa John Creach, Smokey Wilson (and others) on June 10 and Taj Mahal, Otis Rush and the Bernie Pearl Blues Band (among others) on June 11 at the John Anson Ford Theatre, noon to sunset.

OVER THE EDGE:
Melissa turns
Manilow
The alternative album rock format heard on KEDG "The Edge" is now a distant memory. At midnight, May 12, the station went from Melissa (as in Etheridge) to Manilow when they turned adult contemporary and became K -LITE. The station's official call letters, however, will remain KEDG. The Golden West Broadcasting station was initially known as KMPC -FM when it debuted October 4, 1987, replacing the "quiet storm" KUTE. The demise of the Edge was like a flashback to the end of KMET, especially since several former MET jocks Jim Ladd, Cynthia Fox, Rick Scarry and others were on the Edge. The Edge's control room hotline even included the legendary KMET call letters.
Yet unlike those at KMET, the personalities on the Edge got to say good -bye on the air. Instead of going out like the MET with tested classics, departing program director J.J. Jackson continued to play new music right until the end with the not -yet- released Call's "Let the Day Begin." Jackson hinted that the Edge will rise from the ashes.
HOLLYWOOD VIA SATELLITE: KITS Hollywood Hamilton has rejected a $250,00 offer to host an afternoon drive at New York's Z -100. Instead, Hamilton will stay in Hollywood at KITS
and prepare forthe launch of 'Hangin' With Hollywood,' a five -hour Transtar Radio Network syndicated show with guests including Sam Kinison, Jon Bon Jovi and Debbie Gibson.
NAME GAME: Only weeks after Golden West Broadcasting settled out of court with consultant Fred Jacobs over use of the name "the Edge," Golden West is
caught in another name battle. KGIL- FM has been using the name K -LITE since March and has filed suit against Golden West for trademark infringement. KEDG general manager Bill Ward claims that Golden West purchased the term "K -LITE" from Westwood One, which assumed ownership of the name when it took over KIQQ. A preliminary hearing is set for June 5.
The name game continues to be a hot topic elsewhere. Jacor Communications Inc. has complied with Westwood One's request and has ceased using the term "Pirate" atWEBN Cincinnati, WYHY Nashville and WFLZ Tampa. Also, WHTQ Orlando has agreed to stop using the term "Rock and Roll Pirates." Westwood One maintains that the term "Pirate Radio" was created by program director and on -air personality Michael Scott Shannon. PD Mark Driscoll of WIQQ Philadelphia, however, has not acknowledged Westwood One's requestto stop using the "Pirate Radio" name. Driscoll says that no one station owns the term.
Talk leader KABC won a preliminary injunction in May prohibiting competitor KFI from using

the slogan "talk radio" in conjunction with its call letters, but days later KFI filed for a motion of clarification on that ruling.
Just in case you need the capsulized version: KABC, not KFI, is
"talk radio." KEDG is still officially KEDG but now goes by K -LITE which KGIL says they are. And Scott Shannon is
the only pirate. Got it?
KEILLOR'S BACK: Storyteller extraordinaire Garrison Keillor will return to the public radio airwaves this fall with a new p r o g r a m
Garrison Keil lor: tentatively American Pie titled "Garrison
K e i l l o r' s
American Radio Company of the Air." The show will be performed live in various cities.
SIGN OF THE TIMES: In San Francisco, Power 10ó's sister station KXXX "X -100" got a surprise recently when it found two of its 14 x 48 -foot billboards altered by a group called the Billboard Liberation Front. The billboard, which read "Hits Happen -New X -100" was changed to "Shit Happens -New Exxon." In a press release sent to the station, the Billboard Liberation Front said "in a show of solidarity with our beleaguered and unjustly maligned corporate comrades at Exxon Corporation the group had decided to re -enter the vital field of outdoor advertising improvement." The billboards were restored before the station could get a picture.
KANDY MAN: John Candy's "Radio Kandy" is once again back on the Los Angeles airwaves. The comedy show syndicated by Transtar had been
missing in action since KNX -FM flipped to KODJ. You can catch the Candyman at 8 a.m. Sundays on KLSX.
Candy's Back
in L.A.!
WANTED: A recent Hollywood Reporterclassified ad offering a "DJ position" requested an "energetic, thorough, conscientious entry level person needed for various duties." Unfortunately, "DJ" in this case stood for "driver /janitor."
RADIO TV: "Midnight Caller," the drama about an ex -cop turned radio talk show host,
was renewed for a second season by NBC. Yet another radio TV series, "FM," a comedy loosely based on Santa Monica's KCRW, wasn't
Midnight Caller: picked up by
Gary Cole the network.
SOUND OF SILENCE: Close to 10,000 radio stations across the country went silent for 30 seconds in an attempt to draw attention to the importance of radio. The 90- second spot, hosted by James Earl Jones, is
part of a S100-million advertising campaign launched by the National Association of Broadcasters and the Radio Advertising Bureau, based on the theme "Radio: What Would Life Be Without It ?"

IN THE 90'S: By Mike Rose in England
For many years, the world's number one international radio network, the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) World Service, had a reputation for relia- bility and stuffiness. The reliability is still there, but the stuffiness has gone. Former BBC current affairs anchorman John Tusa took over the World Service three years ago. He brought with him an appropriate balance of gravitas and humor which made his TV style authoritative yet digestible. The results of the changes Tusa's arrival heralded have recently emerged in a series of changes to World Service progams, both in format and style. Most of Its 120 million listeners (Voice of America has an estimated 55 million worldwide) seem to approve.
Gone are many of those 'starchy," plum -in- their -mouth voices which were easily identifiable as British. Their rather smug and self- satisfied air has increasing- ly given way to soft Welsh lilts or broad Scottish brogues reading the news. The Irish, long the darlings of British TV and radio audiences, feature extensively as presenters and Interviewers. The "British" in the "BBC" has at last come to be rep- resentative of the diverse nationalities in the island monarchy, eschewing the old tendency to equate it with the English to the exclusion of all others.
Changes in style meant changes in substance, with new program formats, especially notable in the news and current affairs output. Some of the daily news bulletins now last a full hour, allowing news headlines, on- the -spot reports from correspondents and in -depth analysis of the most important stories. Not only is the World Service a showplace for Britain, it also offers the world insight into little known cultures, exemplified by recent features on Senegalese rock music and Laotian painting.
But one thing hasn't changed: the theme music before every news bulletin. Without the orchestral version of the old English folk song "Lily Bolero," the World Service just wouldn't be itself, says John Tusa. All change has its limits.
WEST COAST BRIT WAVES Both KUSC (91.5 -FM) and KCRW (89.9 -FM) air BBC -produced programs:
The 10- minute broadcast of "BBC World Service News" is on KUSC every Monday through Friday at 6, 7 and 8 a.m. and on KCRW -- every midnight except Tuesday.
On Saturday, KUSC airs two quiz -type game shows: "My Word!" at 9 p.m. and "My Music!" at 9:30 p.m. Following this comedy treat at 10 p.m. is "Best of the BBC," featuring British classical performances.
KCRW's "Playhouse" in June includes several BBC dramatic features: 'Raffles' and "The Spy Who Came In From The Cold' on Mondays,"My Cousin Rachel" and "Jamaica Inn" on Tuesdays. Other fea- tures include: "Rebecca "and 'The Birds" on June 2, 'Hadrian VII" and "The Ghastly Performance" on June 16, 'The Country Wife" on June 23 and "Rookery Took "and 'Martin's Close" on June 30.

Film Review INDIANA JONES AND THE LAST CRUSADE Fraze...
Think I could be a little further back in the magazine? I guess not: I'm already on the last page. Is this some kind of hint? I mean, we have Scott Shannon on a recent cover, and I'm on page 49! I asked the "powers that be," and they told me, "It's prime po- sition- people like to read back to front." Oh yeah, right! If I buy that one, I've got some land on Jupiter I'd like to sell myself.
...at the Flicks OK, this issue we're reviewing
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. After the last sequel, I think the last crusade was trying to find a good script! Well, they seem to have done it. In this one, Indy has to find the Holy Grail...and it's not easy getting that one away from Monty Python. There are five of them, and only one of him. And he also has to find his Dad, played by Sean Connery. Boy, when your Dad is James Bond, it's gotta be tough. But "Junior" (as Connery calls him) seems up to the task.
Once again Harrison Ford is great
in the role, but if he was a carpenter and I
was a lady, I still don't think I'd marry him. And he pulls off some great stunts in this movie. We can almost forgive him for spawning a show like McGyver. Let's face it, he was the prototype! And he's the only other guy besides McGyver who could make a nuclear weapon out of a pack of milk duds.
So I think you'll like Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. There are chases, Nazis, beautiful women and thugs. Sounds like my place on a Saturday night!
Love ya, babe! Gotta go! Ciao!! Frazer Smith is on 97.1 KLSX 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. Saturdays. Fraze at the Flicks, produced by Pre- miere Radio Network can be heard M -F at 5:20 p.m. You can also see Frazer live at the Ice House every Tuesday and Wednesday nights and the Laugh Factory every Friday night.

LAST WORDS
MID-EASTERN MAESTRO: THE DARK BOB I've known Dark Bob from his polyester - suited performance artist era to his sphinx look -alike club musician period. But this year he's found his groove. The Arabic in Dark Bob has surfaced, and his music gives us a glimpse into the heart and soul of the Middle East far more human and accessible than our twisted TV images of a dissonant place.
"I think ethnic music crosses all boundaries and helps people love the differences between them- selves. But I'm not making music that has an ethnic qual- ity to it to make peace work; I'm doing it to make good music. The reason I use Middle Eastern music in my work is that I grew up with it.
My parents are fairly American- ized. But they did play a lot of Mo- hammed EI Bakkar. He came to Amer- ica in the '50s and dressed up like our stereotype of an Arab genie with curly shoes and a tur- ban. But his music was sincere: songs about having a heart with a thousand crying eyes. That stuff was just as im- portant to me as "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds."
Ever since I started creating music, it had Middle Eastern qualities, like droning on one chord for a long time. Of course I can't make authentic Middle Eastern music because I'm still a guy from California, and I'm just as intrigued by the harmony of the Beach Boys as I am the disharmonies of Mo-
hammed EI Bakkar. Somehow merg- ing the two together gives me an honest musical sound.
Middle Eastern musicians make music for different reasons than we do. America is a capitalist consumer society, so we make songs in that mentality. But the folk and ethnic mu- sic over there is done like painting or
poetry, out of love and human need. A need in their soul. Asa perform- ance artist, I work that way, without the pressure of making a com- mercial product, so my songs are like paintings: per- sonal expressions others relate to only on the most personal level. It's not weird to me that I've had a seven -year music career in the art world. My audi- ence demands non -conformity.
I was thinking Photo by Basia that someday
everyeoaywould have a hit record for three minutes and 12 seconds. And there'd be these little instant record- ing studios in parking lots like the Foto- mat. They'd be called the Warner Cor- ner or Capital Quick Stop. You'd go in, record a song, and they'd play it that day for the whole world to hear. It
would cut through political borders, social traditions and religious beliefs. We'd be hearing stuff on the radio by everybody, everywhere, all the time. This is the vibratory reality of music.'
