This history of Georgia begins in Savannah. Though the area was first inhabited by the Yamacraw tribe of natives, the town of Savannah and the colony of Georgia were founded in 1733 by British colonists led by James Oglethorpe. He envisioned the town laid out on a strict grid pattern for easy expansion, and Savannah was built from the ground up as the New World’s first planned city.
Today Savannah is a charming town of about 140,000 people with more than 15,000 hotel rooms in the city and surrounding areas. Savannah attracts visitors who want to explore history, architecture, and nature. During your time in Savannah for the Southern Region, make sure to visit many of the wonderful attractions that make
