John C. Childs

Mr. Childs is Georgia-Pacific LLC’sAssistant General Counsel, Litigation. In thisposition he is responsible for all of Georgia-Pacific’s litigation, except employment andlabor. Georgia-Pacific is an Atlanta, GA basedprivate company owned by Koch Industries,Inc. His duties also include the managementof the defense of the extensive asbestospersonal injury litigation filed throughout thecountry.

Prior to joining Georgia-Pacific, Mr.Childs was an equity partner in Sonnenschien,

Nath & Rosenthal LLP in Chicago, Illinois. Previously he had been a partner atMcDermott, Will & Emery in Chicago (1997-1999) and Popham Haik inMinneapolis, Minnesota (1981-1997). Throughout his career in privatepractice he was a civil trial lawyer who practiced primarily in multi-party,multi-jurisdictional toxic tort, products liability and complex commerciallitigation. He tried to verdict more than 35 jury trials in both state and federalcourts, and argued numerous appeals before state supreme courts andvarious federal appellate courts.

Mr. Childs is admitted to the Minnesota, Illinois, Georgia, and NorthDakota State Bar Associations, United States District Court for the District ofMinnesota, the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois(Trial Bar), the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth, Seventh andEighth Circuits and the United States Supreme Court. He is past Chair of theCorporate Counsel Committee of the International Association of DefenseCounsel (IADC); and has been an active member of the American BarAssociation’s Litigation Section; Minority Corporate Counsel Association(MCCA); Association of Corporate Counsel (ACC); Manufacturers Alliance forProductivity Innovation (MAPI); Center for Public Resources (CPR); ChiefLitigation Counsel Association (CLCA); and the Georgia State Bar AssociationDiversity Program.

He received a B.A. (magna cum laude) degree from St. Olaf College inNorthfield, Minnesota in 1978 and a J.D. (cum laude) degree from CaliforniaWestern School of Law in San Diego, California in 1981, where he served asEditor-in-Chief of the Law Review.
