“Energy storage will be critical in futureenergy systems and ITM Power is at thecentre of this technological approach. There will be many solutions to theenergy storage conundrum, which mustbe solved if we are to harness renewableenergy successfully.”
Prof Marcus NewboroughDevelopment Director, ITM Power
Increasing the penetration of variable
renewable power sources (solar PV
and wind) in the grid is a major pathway
for reducing dependency on fossil fuels.
However at times of low electricity
demand, the availability of renewables
can exceed that which can be safely
admitted without causing grid stability
issues. If at these times the renewable
power sources are simply shed, the
economic justification for increasing
the renewables penetration is severely
compromised. To overcome this requires
energy storage technologies to be deployed
to absorb variable renewable power.
Energy stored in the form of hydrogen
is a means for achieving not only a greener
power system but a greener energy system
as a whole. Electrolysers can convert
variable and otherwise wasted renewable
power into clean green hydrogen which
can be used for generating power, heat
and transport fuel without carbon
emissions. Electrolysers may be activated
during defined periods to aid power system
management and the generated hydrogen
exported to the industrial and transport
sectors. Importantly this Sector Export
can serve to reduce the carbon footprint
of sectors beyond the power industry.
The global car industry is now focussed
on the finalisation of fuel cell cars for
commercial launch in 2015. Unlike battery
electric vehicles (BEV), fuel cell electric
vehicles (FCEV) can be refuelled rapidly
and achieve a similar range to petrol cars.
These vehicles can be served by hydrogen
refuelling technology based on electrolysers,
which transform variable renewable power
inputs into a storable fuel without incurring
carbon emissions. There is thus a synergistic
opportunity to satisfy this imminent market
for hydrogen and overcome the grid
management issues faced by the power
industry in meeting the renewables targets.
ITM Power is leading the development
and deployment of technologies which
advance the realisation of energy storage
for renewable power and particularly the
use of hydrogen generated from electrolysis
and used in the transport sector.
“Wind is an energy source on par with oiland gas and we are pleased to support ITM Power in the development of itsTransportable High Pressure HydrogenRefuelling Station to demonstrate theproposition of decarbonising vehiclefleets, using hydrogen derived from windenergy. This fits well with Vestas’ goal ofgenerating the greatest and mostsustainable return on wind for ourcustomers.”

“Germany is clearly the leading centre for hydrogen infrastructure development in Europe and ITM Power is now fullyengaged with the key players.
Germany’s renewed emphasis onrenewable energy following its review ofnuclear technology is focusing attentionon energy storage and the use of hydrogenin particular. This is a very exciting time for the Company.”

“One of the key questions we have to answer, is ‘how can we build a hydrogeninfrastructure that takes advantage ofrenewable energies?’ Taking wind or solarpower and transforming it into hydrogenand then refuelling vehicles with thathydrogen is actually the key towardssustainable mobility. In this context ITMPower is offering an interesting conceptfor utilities to store energy and to workaround fluctuations generated when theydeploy renewable energies.”

SECTOR EXPORT 10
Energy storage will be the criticalcomponent in future energy systems and ITM Power is at the centre of thistechnology. There will be manysolutions to the energy storageconundrum and all of the solutionswill be required if we are to harnessrenewable energy successfully.
As more intermittent renewable power
is assimilated into the network we will see
an increasing occurrence of this plant being
'constrained off'.The need for energy
storage and the sector export of energy
will become increasingly apparent.
An example is Denmark, where 20% of the
generating capacity is wind but only a small
percentage of the demand can be met with
that wind power, the rest has to be
exported to Sweden or Norway or wasted.
ITM Power’s technology provides an
efficient means of converting excess
power and storing it as hydrogen, to be
used when needed. ITM Power’s HFuel
product can be used as a flexible load which
can be operated by power companies to
absorb excess power. The use of hydrogen
electrolysis and storage to manage the grid
means that we would never have to cease
renewable energy production.
The market for the hydrogen produced
from renewable electricity is potentially
huge. It is the market for a zero carbon
footprint fuel. The adoption of hydrogen
in countries like Germany is now rapid and
we urge the UK Government to look again
at this important opportunity for the UK.
ITM are proud to be pioneering tomorrow’s
solutions to today’s energy problems.

Technology ITM Power operate a rigorous testingprogramme. This takes place at threelevels of increasing sophistication, each in a specially equippedlaboratory.
The first is small scale testing of membranes
and MEAs. This covers numerous
chemistries and catalysts concurrently as
part of our core project work to underpin
both our longevity programmes and funded
programmes.
The second level of testing focuses on
full-size cells and stack. This laboratory
has been crucial to demonstrate that the
technology scaled up successfully and
verified the function of our stacks.
It continues to perform a key role in
analysing stack performance over a range of
operating profiles and is a fundamental stage
in our QC process.
The third laboratory undertakes product
testing. At this stage the emphasis is on
qualifying successful system integration
and quality control of full scale products and
prototypes. In addition to a series of routine
system tests which are undertaken on each
product, we also monitor responses to a
range of continuous and cyclic test profiles .
In the six month period since the interim
results, we have acquired over half a million
cumulative test hours in these facilities.
“Decarbonising our vehicle fleet andreducing tail pipe pollutants is vitallyimportant to our clients and for ouroperations in urban areas across theSouth East of England. At the heart of every electrolyser system
is a stack. This key component provides
the mechanical and electrical environment
where water is split into hydrogen and
oxygen. ITM Power has invested significant
effort in the design, assembly methodology
and testing of its stacks to achieve robust
and reliable platforms. Significant intellectual
property has been generated and
successfully deployed during this process.
In addition to the stack, an electrolyser
product requires numerous additional
attributes including dedicated balance of
plant, control system and packaging. All of
this must be achieved against a background
of compliance in order to gain the CE mark
required for commercial sale in the EU.
The ITM Power team is well equipped
to navigate the product development
process having successfully initiated the trial
of the HFuel hydrogen refuelling system

in April this year – turning technology into
viable products.
