Biographical note Le Roy (Roy) Stanton Burroughs was born 2 April 1893 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to George Frederick and Minnie (Davies) Burroughs. His father was Rector of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Milwaukee. His happy home life in the rectory caused him to select his father's profession quite early in life, and from the time he was in grade school he planned his studies to prepare himself for the ministry. At North Division High School in Milwaukee, he selected classical and historical coursework, taking four years of Latin and three years of Greek. After graduation in 1912, he attended the University of Wisconsin at Madison, where he graduated as a member of Phi Beta Kappa in 1916. At Madison, Burroughs majored in English and minored in Sociology, taking courses that would be unavailable in the seminary. He was planning to get involved in mission work in a large city and so took courses relating to poverty, crime, and social psychology. Burroughs obtained his theological education at Nashotah House in Nashotah, Wisconsin. He was ordained a Deacon in 1918, the same year he was married to Jeannette (Jean) Pollworth. He was ordained to the priesthood in 1919. Though seminary students were exempt from military service in World War I, Burroughs felt he should make some sort of contribution. He worked during his summer vacation in a munitions plant and served as an unofficial chaplain at Camp Robinson in Sparta, Wisconsin. He then came to Ames, Iowa, to teach a course called "War Aims" at Iowa State College (University). The day after his arrival was the Armistice, but he stayed on for the year to teach English. In the fall of 1919, Burroughs became Rector of St. John's Church in Ames. He also served as a "Student Inquirer," conducting research for the National Council of the Episcopal Church on the religious life of college students. This six year study, which was carried out nationwide, was eventually described in a book by the Reverend Paul Micou, The Church's Inquiry into Student Religious Life. At the time Burroughs took over at St. John's, it was a small frame building at the corner of 5th and Clark in downtown Ames. (Remnants of this church can still be seen - it was used to build two homes that stand side by side on East 6th Street.) The rectory -sometimes called the "Wrectory" - was a ramshackle old dwelling in Campustown, on the site of the current church. Because of the church's remote location, activities for student parishioners took place at the rectory. Jean Burroughs was an essential part of this student ministry, as her home also functioned as a student center. She continued her involvement throughout the years of Roy Burroughs' ministry. She was the first diocesan Director of Personnel, and the first to hold a similar post for the churchwomen of the Sixth Province of the Episcopal Church. She also represented Iowa churchwomen at four Triennial Meetings of the Church. Roy and Jean Burroughs'

daughter Marguerite spent her early childhood in a home that was often bustling with parish members. A new church and rectory were major goals during Burroughs' early years at St. John's. The rectory was built first, and was completed in 1924. The church took longer to achieve. Two parishioners who were also long-time faculty members at Iowa State provided material assistance to the building project. Louis H. Pammel, Head of the Botany Department from 1889 to 1929, contributed the stone used for the church. (Pammel was a very active church member, and his files relating to the church can be found in his papers, RS 13/5/13.) Allen Holmes Kimball, Head of Architectural Engineering from 1914 to 1946, designed the building free of charge. Contributions for the church came from students, parish members, and church members throughout the state. $15,000 came from the Department of Education of the National Protestant Episcopal Church, and in 1936, the Diocese of Iowa assumed the $18,000 debt which remained. The church was begun in 1929 and was dedicated on 4 May 1930. With the proper facilities available at last, Burroughs continued his very active ministry. He also continued to teach at Iowa State when needed, in the fields of religion and family relations. In the Ames community, he was involved with the Boy Scouts Central Committee and the Social Service Committee, and served on the Board of the Ames Public Library for many years. He was sought after as a speaker and spoke at Rotary and Lion's Club meetings, various parents' organizations, and many commencement and baccalaureate programs. He was a frequent participant in church sponsored conferences and served as Dean of the Evergreen General Conferences (held in Evergreen, Colorado) from 1952 to 1961. Burroughs retired from active ministry on 1 July 1961. Through the years of his retirement, he continued to speak to various groups, assisted with services in the central Iowa area, and conducted quiet days for churchwomen and for other priests. As he grew older, increasing infirmities forced him to slow down, and he was hospitalized for more than a year before his death in November, 1974. Collection description The collection (1889-1974) primarily contains material from Burroughs’ work at St. John’s Church and other professional activities, but also includes records and photographs from Burroughs’ family, childhood and schooling. The records include biographical materials, work from his grade school through seminary education, personal and professional correspondence, reference material, photographs, and a variety of his writings including articles, sermons, and diaries.
