Description

A social enterprise is an organisation that applies commercial strategies to maximize improvements in human and environmental well-being, rather than maximizing profits for external shareholders. Social enterprises can be structured as a for-profit or non-profit, and may take the form of a co-operative, mutual organisation, a social business, or a charity organisation. Social enterprises are businesses whose primary purpose is the common good. They use the methods and disciplines of business and the power of the marketplace to advance their social, environmental and human justice agenda.

Social entrepreneurship involves using the skills and strategies of business to innovatively and sustainably solve social, environmental, and economic problems. The ventures created by social entrepreneurs can be for-profit, non-profit, or an innovative hybrid of the two.Social entrepreneurs are working to create positive social change, fostering economic and social equality, and ensuring human rights in our local community and across the world. This involves a commitment to sustainability by decreasing their waste/environmental impact and enhancing the quality of life in their community – while providing an outstanding product or service to their customers.

The purpose of this course is to provide students with an introduction to the major opportunities and challenges facing social entrepreneurs and their ventures. Social entrepreneurship's rapid emergence over the past decade has coincided with the rise of information technology that has given individuals more power now than at any point in history. The social entrepreneurs question is simple: “How can we use that power to make a positive, lasting contribution to the society?”

This course is designed to teach students how to apply fundamental skills in organisations that seek to create social value. It will also expose students to theory regarding entrepreneurship, models of social change, definitions of social enterprise and social entrepreneurship, management skills required for social enterprise organisations, scaling of social impact, and impact measurement for social mission organisations.
