Your quest begins
Dear Andrew,
Here is the first edition of our monthly newsletter tailored to freshman
candidates who have declared interest in the International High School.
We are not a one size fits all school. We have such a wealth of
opportunities in store that it is impossible to reveal all during a single
visit. The intention of the monthly newsletter is to supplement your Open
House, shadow and interview experience. We will keep you informed and
enrich your understanding of what sets us apart from other schools.

Let the numbers speak for themselves
You should know that the Stanford admit rate for 2013 was only 5.6%. It
was 5.8% for Harvard. These record low rates are for the brightest
students, who only applied in the first place because they were advised
that they had a realistic chance. Consider also that UC Berkeley received
well over 60,000 applications this year and UCLA, a record-breaking
84,000.
The point is that the top colleges receive huge numbers of perfectly well
qualified applicants and they need to somehow discriminate the top end.
The IB Diploma does this precisely. The numbers speak for themselves.
Recently the Stanford admit rate for IB Diploma candidates has been 15%;
for Cornell: 31%, and for Berkeley: 58%. You and your families should know
about this. Keep in mind that the most powerful argument for coming to
International High School is the IB Diploma. We are the only San Francisco
independent school offering this program. It changes everything.
The IB Diploma is a two year mini-degree
Think of the four year high school experience at International divided into
two distinct halves. The first two years are the foundation-two years of
exploration and discovery. The second half is more radical. As juniors our
students begin nothing less than a two-year mini degree. This is the IB
Diploma.
Students customize their IB Diploma by choosing a balanced set of seven
classes which they pursue in-depth for two, full years. By the end of the IB
experience they will have a sophisticated foundation in philosophy, they
are able to lead as well as participate in academic seminars with
confidence and they will have produced an extended undergraduate level
research paper. The latter is an important rite of passage. Our IB
students write well and are confident at the microphone. The colleges love
all of this, of course
